This '20 years too late to be relevant' version of The Office is indeed pathetic, but you've got to be joking about Utopia. Frontline was the last great comedy to come out of Australia before Working Dog completely sold out to commercial tv and became the very people they used to satirise. Shows such as Utopia and The Hollowmen are about as funny as leukaemia. Toothless, obvious garbage, and the casting only made things worse. The likes of Kitty Flanagan and Celia Pacquola are as bland as they come and Merrick Watts has all the talent and charisma of a soggy toilet roll.

One thing that doesn't help the show is that the colour grading is too cinematic, there is also high contrast between light and dark. The clothing and set decoration has definitely been artifically distressed, but to a level where it is overly drab and feels a little too far. Comedy works better without distraction and a flat natural base. I appreciate shows putting in effort, but in a comedy it's in an area that does not help.

It's funny how in the original show Brent would act like actual funny comedians to try and get a laugh. This was done deliberately to create cringe humour at the characters expense. WOMEN MAKE IT FUNNY! 😮
@aleksisuuronen5969Күн бұрын
I see multiple problems. Maybe it just is a very low budgeted show (a show about an office do not need a crazy budget tho, that was not a problem in UK). Acting is definitelly a problem, the woman playing the Hannah is just doing a bad impression of what Steve Carrell did. You see her so clearly trying to chase many mannerisms of Carrell and how some joke is tried to be delivered by her. Not much to mention from any other acting shown.. to much better direction. Also the set is very bleak and a tinier office works better to tie camera movements and kinda a feeling of the characters being tied in it together. The wardrobe department, I don't know what they were even thinking. Everyones clothing is like having picked something as dull as can from a thrift store. I don't know how you manage that in a show about an office where it should not be too hard to dress people so they have something that tells a bit about their character, but still just having kinda basic ok looking clothes.
@riccardogerace24287 сағат бұрын

I agree with others we have a great library of similar shows that should be pushed forward and receive more recognition.
@RobulousDee11 сағат бұрын
I heard someone comment that it's obviously using the same main characters - like David/Michael/Hannah, Gareth/Dwight/Lizzie, etc - but it's like the show expects you to have watched the previous versions and know exactly who they're meant to be. And with that, they don't put any effort into actually developing the characters beyond "Ahh, Nick is doing Jim-like things!", but without any of the established character work that actually makes that enjoyable to watch
@OMGSAMCOPSEYКүн бұрын

About the atmosphere - it's the lighting. Both UK and the US version have this yellow-ish tint to them and they are lit mainly by lights that were up and above the ceiling (where they removed a few tiles from the ceiling to make it shine on the characters) and other lights, such as when they had talking heads. When you mentioned it, I knew right away what was this "atmosphere", this version is lit so.. dimly. It's kinda.. noir-like, which doesn't *fit* well for these types of shows. + The colour palette, why is everything so *gray.* That's what makes the lighting seem off, everything is just so dim. Another issue is the cameras, different lenses perceive lighting differently and from what I know, UK and US versions were both filmed on cameras with lenses, that were used for news, talk shows and content as such. This looks like a camera used for moviemaking, which JUST - DOES - NOT - FIT at all. I knew this reboot was going to be a mistake, but this is far worse than I was expecting it to be.

Having the Dwight character a woman in this version severely limits the comedy and pranks they can pull since the dynamic makes it more uncomfortable. Looking back at the US office, Jim probably should have been arrested and fired since there are several instances that he physically assaults Dwight but having it still be a sitcom with an insufferable dude softens the blow. Some of the pranks will definitely not look great when the target is a woman especially in this day and age.

This cast just doesn’t seem like it has any of those incredible actors like steve carell to break it out and make it unique though.

I've seen the entire season of the show and I summed up to be just ok (6/10) and I expected to be that as the US office didn't get better until S2 and even its intended spin-off Parks and Recs didn't get better until S3. I really did find each episode's setup and scenario to be funny, but the major problem is that their pay-off are very lacking and underwhelming with 2 of it being pretty good. My major criticism of the show is the lead character, Hannah the boss, who is completely unbearable throughout the season, with no redeeming qualities of her and she comes as completely incompetent at everything and ignorant at the end of each episode. Hope this gets improved. Other characters served as fair versions as their UK/US counterparts. I do want to see another season and things get improved. Last chance for the show.

@@rymonddog2317 well they do as the borrowed themes from the previous versions of the show. For example, the part where two regions are pitted against each other is in previous versions of the show.

Was it an intentional decision to make all the characters ugly or is that just Australia?

I typed out a big reply going over all the points you raised before realising the issue is, you've got a box of what you expect, and you're complaining this doesn't fit that box. You say that both they should have used jokes and plot points from the UK and US, that then that it was bad that they did. You say they went too far and it was over the top, then what's the point of XYZ if they don't go over the top. To anyone, especially Aussies looking at this, watch it. Remember you can make anything sound shit if you shine a negative light and explain it in a dead pan voice

Im gonna see if I can watch it. But I think everyone is trashing on it just because it gives more clicks than to say "its not great, not so bad" or something like that. We'll see. I mean i'ts not meant to be a better version of the UK or US versions, but it could be ok. Although right off the bat I can see they really chose some not so good looking people for the roles, which is strange being that everyone knows you can find beautiful people in Australia just by walking around any street, so hmm...
