I still remember my first ride on Batman back in 92. The line was 3 hours long, winding through the park, then to a light and airy gotham city park, then under the platform with the cop car with bullet holes and the busted fire hydrant, the sewer and then finally the stairs up to the loading area. Listening to the batman soundtrack crescendo as the train was loaded, and then, the smoothest and most amazing coaster ride i have ever experienced. The ride dispatcher announced on that day that the entire coaster had been built to within 1/4" of the plans, which was why it was so smooth. The only thing thats even come close was Alpengeist.

Penguin trek has some shakiness to it as well. This a brand new family coaster at Seaworld and it barely goes over 40 mph. You get on Mako and its glass smooth at 80+ mph. Have noticed even with Hulk at IOA after the retrack just a few years ago it is already really rough. It aged alot quicker than the original track. Phoenix rising at Busch Gardens has a rattle too. Regardless of what the issue is it exists with all their new generation models. The quality of B&M's has gone down hill hard over the past 5-7 years. Same expensive price but not the same expensive smooth ride. Will be interesting to see if the new for 2025 dive and wing coasters will feature the same issues.

@jonny-b4954Ай бұрын
I've always assumed it's a combination between maybe larger tolerances in the track manufacturing and/or the spring dampeners on the side guide wheels. All those are spring loaded, to an extent nowadays. At least, enough to keep them taut with the track and in contact. Also, maybe an under-engineering of high g sections. The precision lost in the track manufacturing could be them trying to combat inflation and price increases

Back in the 90s the old Dinn coasters had a reputation for "bounce" and "shuffle". The bounce was the vertical movement and the shuffle was the horizontal hunting of the coaches as they rolled down the wooden track. Denise Dinn Larrick said they would make the track gauge slightly more narrow in the turns to reduce hunting, and noted that a special construction technique had to be followed in order to do that correctly. Around that same time, B&M introduced that steering linkage that you call a crossbar here. I had assumed that was to keep the wheel carriers together to reduce hunting. I'm surprised that there are cases where they don't use one.

Given B&M's reputation, I think it would make a lot of sense if the shake were being caused by a part they have to source from somewhere else. I wouldn't think they would just start making lower quality rides out of nowhere when quality is the number one selling point of a B&M coaster. A parts manufacturer they can't control making a slight change seems to perfectly fit the scenario, especially if older coasters are developing this shake after a refurbishment. It also makes me wonder if Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia has been experiencing a similar issue. It has had a pretty rough shake for quite a long time, and I wonder if Over Georgia's maintenance team has been using parts that aren't from/approved by B&M.

B&M literally has to source everything from somewhere else. They don't have any manufacturing of their own. I'm a fan of early B&M inverts and have ridden many of them. Something has progressively changed because they have gotten noticeably worse. Like the OG Batman at SFGA is nearly perfect and feels very solid. It tracks exceptionally well and I didn't feel any noticeable rattles or shakes (I rode this one later and was shocked how good it still rode). But the later clones and variations like Flight Deck at CGA and Batman at SFMM are still very solid but not the same. Fast forward to Silver Bullet and it's worse, then Banshee has a noticeable rattle. Now Nemesis is apparently worse. I figured the later ones were bigger so maybe that was it but that doesn't explain why the clones aren't the same. I also rode Deja Vu at SFMM and then later rode Aftershock at Silverwood and Aftershock is by far and away better than Deja Vu ever was but it's a clone. I know those are Vekoma but same ride made at a similar time and one for some reason is miles better seemed weird to me. I never thought much of it until this video.

Hi Ryan, I was wondering if you could do a video on height requirements on rides, how the fit of the restraints (or lack thereof) would be for people who don't meet the height requirement, and for people who would never reach the height requirement, could a supplemental restraint or harness be designed that would allow them to fit securely in the rides

The trains on nemesis are not new. I spoke with the a maintenance engineer and he said they went under a major refurb in 2018 with new seat columns etc but they are still the old ones.
@ColaholikerАй бұрын
At some point the question becomes more philosophical in nature - how much can you actually change and still consider the trains being the same? After all, you can swap pretty much any part at pone point in time, end up with 100% different parts than what was there when the ride opened, and they'd still be the same trains? The same goes for wooden coaster and the wood along their track getting replaced constantly a bit at a time... 😉
@EmeraldIVАй бұрын
im still wondering about iron menace's big jolt at the end. also in videos of it testing, at the top of the zero g roll you can see how the entire train essentially wobbles. what i find interesting though is that this shake is stronger when the train is travelling slower (at least on nemesis - the final turn is apparently the worst bit and you can actually hear it in onride videos)

Unrelated question: Big water coasters go through big bright plastic tunnels. Rail coasters go through dark tunnels. Will rail coasters get better tunnels in the future?
@ryantheridemechanicАй бұрын
@@Maccbruce theirs lots of rule and regulations around tunnels. In general people want dark. But it all depends on the park. Tunnels are super expensive to add to a ride and engineering doesn’t like them either.

Any idea why Iron Menace's rattle is so much worse in the back row compared to the front? I rode it about 15 or 16 times evenly spread out over the 3 rows and the back row was so much worse.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the front row doesn’t have a floor and the second and third lows do

On the new family invert in Busch Gardens Tampa it feels more like a rattle. You can hear the train rattle and feel the vibration. I believe it is the same for the new family coaster at SeaWorld Orlando. Would that be from hunting or wheels or even something else?

@@colinschmitz8297 I would say this is side to side movement. If you referring to a vibration that increases and decreases with speed that that is just the overuse of nylon wheels that a lot of parks love. They get flat spots.

Look at Scream (2003) at SFMM vs Medusa (2000) SFDK....Scream shakes, rattles and rolls like a Chuck Berry Concert.... Medusa is STILL smooth as silk. .... Both are floorless and both are relatively the same age... And in a similar climate.... What's your take on that?

@@IAmAnonymyz I’ve spent time with both. Medusa uses urethane wheels and Scream is all nylon. Nylons are very rough in general because the mater does not absorb vibration. My opinions

What about the Mack shake? I'm not a fan of B&M ..After a few seasons they are like riding a woody in a wheel seat. The inverts bang your head even fury vibrates in the rear outside seat. Valravn at CP has gotten pretty bad. The 2nd dive drop at the bottom is bad,It messes with my vision and wont ride it unless its front row. Even iron Menace at dorney has a bad shake at the end..Another great video

I have to disagree on Fury. Earlier this year, I rode in the back row in an outside seat and it was an awesome ride. And even Valravn didn't stick out as being particularly rattly last year when I was at CP. What was rather uncomfortable was Rougarou, but I just thought that was due to it being converted from stand-up to floorless.
