I'm doing the mild hand porting on GT40P heads, roller rockers, link bar roller lifters, Lunati 51027LUN cam (which has been discontinued) Eddie intake, 600 holley DP, MSD street fire and distributor, 303 top loader trans. (Wish I had a top loader 4 speed.) About everything I got has been donated or bartered for as a budget build. I told my mustang buddies what I was doing and they started donating and trading stuff around to contribute to the cause. I can't wait to get back on it and get it running. My shop air compressor died and I didn't have a way to finish the porting on the heads. I just got me a good compressor and I'm ready to get other work out of the way and get back on it!

The B cam deserves respect because of the Lobe Separation Angle. Plus it's great for a stock piston to valve clearance. People think lift is the best..no. that can kill airflow velocity. You want a tight cam to keep cylinder pressures up. Not alot of bleed off.
@rayman12302 жыл бұрын
@Denny an engine loses pressure through overlap; the moment at which the exhaust valve and intake valve are open at the same time. This is part of what’s called dynamic compression. When the the piston is moving to top dead center position there is “bleed off” from the valves being partially open. Less cylinder pressure contained in the cylinder, the less horsepower that’s contained in compression to make said horsepower. A “tighter cam overlap” means less time the valves are left open to bleed off cylinder pressure. The down side to this can be rougher idle, less power down low in off idle operation due to low intake velocity. But the trade of is more of a 2 stroke mind set. When velocity increases and cylinder pressure builds, the power comes on much harder in the desired rpm. The desired rpm is mostly dictated by the camshaft duration. Which is also dependent on multiple factors like total cubic inches of engine, intake manifold runner length, cylinder head cross sectional area of the ports, the valve sizes ect. Most people just through off the self parts together expecting the best performance, but fail to realize, everything works together. Example, Throwing the largest throttle body doesn’t automatically mean more power. Everything in the intake system for air flow is a series of convergent and divergent ducts creating low and high pressure areas to allow for maximum velocity of air without choking off total useable CFM to make power in the desired RPM range. So having to large of a throttle body can actually mean lower airflow velocity into the cylinder, creating a loss of torque in lower rpm. Remember, for street cars, midrange power is desired for quick acceleration from low speeds. This is why smaller displacement engines, without going All out race heads and intake can leave people in the dust on the street. Horsepower is just TORQUE X RPM divided by 5252. The best street car is having the most TORQUE that’s accessible from lower RPM to make the best power in the higher RPM range
@rayman12302 жыл бұрын
@Denny yeah I’d say your right. Every N/A car I’ve personally seen that’s ridiculously fast, advanced the camshaft 2 to 4 degrees mechanically. So the intake valve opening sooner would take advantage of the most vacuum drawling in air from the piston going down, On the intake stroke

Don't forget some of the practical considerations, like the oil pump/distributer drive gear (this is where the letter cams are compatible with the stock oil pump/distributer drive gear, aftermarket cams may not necessarily be forcing you to run a brass oil pump/distributer drive gear and replace it often). Also you need to consider intended usage (cruising/street-strip/hardcore pure race type (drag vs autocross vs road course)) as well as emissions compliance (for cars intended to be licensed for use on public roads).

They aren't bad for the money, especially in the used market. There is something to be said for the 30 years of technology and research that's been gained in the valvetrain department though. Back in 2011 i ran a expo stock bottom end with the mighty B cam with procomp 190cc cylinder heads that had 202 intake valves. 160 exhaust valve and ran 1.7 rockers whitch bumps the lift from 480 to 510 and .5 to the duration and later changed to the E cam whitch is 498 lift but with 1.7 rockers bumps the lift to 528 and both cleared the untouched piston with room to spare ..with both set up i ran a victor jr single plane with a 700 cfm double pump a C4 trans with a worked valve body a 3200 converter and 373s out back and ran on motor with the b cam 13.71 was the best and on a 150 shot ran 11.40..with the Ecam ran a best of 13.57 and on the same shot run 11.33

B cam is the sound that hooked be a long time ago. I’ve been kicking it around but think I’m gonna do the gt40p heads and b cam. And a wet kit 75-100 shot it’ll be a neck breaker 0-60 with new posi and 4.11’s but I’m trying to get in the 12’s I think that setup with slicks should have me covered

I know someone whos had a foxbody coupe with an E303, old school SVO aluminum heads and a GT40 intake. While I have the TFS 1 cam, GT40X aluminums and GT40 intake. Really not that much of a difference in performance. Hell look at people like Neomustangs running stock Ford parts and stock cams for a turbo setup. That should say enough for itself. If you were looking to build a stroker motor like what AV Boys did with their Grey Mare build then I can see camshaft selection becoming a huge role to match everything else you have and run at its best.

At 0:36 you highlight a post of mine from the inter-webs of yore... that was shocking yet cool to see. A stock EFI 5.0 from the day could run with the right cam, trouble was, no one was making/marketing the right cam. Friend had a full weight GT, pump gas, GT40x heads and "real" GT40 intake... long tubes, 4.30's and the... you guessed it, B-cam. In the early 90's a low 12 second no juice street car was the real deal... and he ran bottom 12's weekend after weekend. How about you do a video about the crappy the E7te heads... I'm currently making 368rwhp with E7's on a n/a 306 running 91oct pump gas. People get so wrapped up on "part X"... when, that "single" part has little to do with the "entire combination". Love all the folks who have posted they are running the B-cam. Love.

I absolutely love the alphabet cams. I ran an E cam in my ‘85 GT and it sounded great. I had a ‘90 GT with an F cam and a gear up under it and it ran good. I just finished a HCI on my ‘89 coupe and went with the F cam and I love the way it runs and sounds. I know there’s better heads and better cams out there, but I love the old school parts, the parts I grew up with. That combo in my coupe will beat cat backed coyotes all day long and cost 30k less and look a hell of a lot better.
@michaelharris7484 жыл бұрын
I love fox bodies man but you're not getting a nice fox for 30k less than even a brand new coyote. Matter of fact I can find decent 11-12 coyotes for LESS than what fox bodies sell for right now (nice ones). I love fox mustangs would love to have another but the rocketing prices of them is starting to throw out the whole budget minded argument lol. I paid 16500 for a bolt on 108k 07 gt500 couple months back. I just cant justify paying close to that for a nice fox. Maybe you can find them for good prices still but everywhere I look ppl want 10k for shit and 15 and up for nice foxes.

@@michaelharris748You were not looking hard enough. I got my 85 fox Mustang 3 years ago for 1200 bucks. After pulling a 302, T5 and an 8.8 axle from the junkyard I cleaned up all the parts and rebuilt the 302 into a 347 with ported GT40 iron heads and an F303 cam. I haven't dyno tested the combo but it had enough power to beat a 2015 Camaro SS. I have just a little over 8 grand into the car including the price of the car.

It's 30 year old tech. Yes I had one in my 89 years ago and I thought I was fast. The powerband with the cam is very narrow and unless you get one for free, pass it by

I don’t get the why the hate for the letter cams either. I have an 89 GT that’s about to get some 3 bar GT40 heads along with an explorer upper/lower intake. Kinda on the fence about what cam to get but after watching this video I’m seriously considering the B303, plus id like to have all Ford parts. The other option was for the TFS1 or the E303. Just looking for something fun and with good drivability. Great video my friend!

The last bit about back in the day was so true. Ten hp could cost a win and every little bit mattered. I spent days making my car lighter and stock looking. I went as far as shortened battery cables and thinner wires if possible. The few people that saw my car on the scales couldn't believe it was so light and looked so stock. It won me a lot of money winning by a bumper. It was funny when I went to sell the car I had boxes of parts where I took stuff off and put a gutted part in it's place 😆 I got tired of trying to explain it to idiots wanting to buy a fast car and decided to keep it.

Diggin the ole school footage brother.. they can have these out the box 400 plus cars give me those old torque monster 5.0 fox bodies all day. You had to build your shit not buy it. Another reason so many wreck vids on youtube. In experience drivers with 400 hp under their right foot. Back then you broke in little over 200 and built your way up and your handling of the power increased with the gains in power. All that added up to less number of dummies in the ditch. 😆
