The B7 Orca Pod of Vancouver Island ft. Yaculta | 4K Film | Canada, BC

Short film about the B1 (B7 Matriline) Orca pod we encountered during our three week trip to Vancouver Island, led by the 76 year old matriarch, Scarlett.
In 1987, Scarlett gave birth to an Orca known as Yaculta (B13), easily identified by its collapsed dorsal fin.
Male killer whales begin to 'sprout' in their early teens and their fin begins to grow. It takes until their late teens to reach the full height, sometimes reaching 1.8m (6ft) tall!
Yuculta’s fin was curved and ruffled through his teens and it fully flopped over in the summer of 2006 when he was nineteen years old. Seventeen years later, his unusual fin hasn’t regained any rigidity, but does not appear to impede his survival.
As members of the northern resident population, they can usually be seen from northern Vancouver Island to the North Coast in the summer where they feast on chinook salmon.

Amazing difference between different pods ,, never knew that migrating pods mammal eating and the others exclusive local fish eating.. amazing.. that in itself is totally new to me and i watched nature shows well over fifty years
