The baby spoken of J50 is now almost 2 and called Scarlett But one of Jpod is presumed dead, J14 Samish,a 42 year girl. And a new mother J 28 Polaris is seen with a peanuthead due to starvation! The 4 lower Snake River dams need to come down, the orca are starving NOW!

Grim Chickn Well it’s official. Babies have died and J50’s starving. Boycott salmon to leave more to the Orca. End farmed salmon and stop the pipeline and the oil shipping tankers planned for their seas. How likely are these to happen? Not very. Grieve the orca. (I do wonder if boycotting salmon would get the attention of some power brokers to do less harm to the Orca. Might get the salmon farmers on the side of the Orca paradoxically.) Dunno. I’ve got chemo brain so my ideas can be convoluted. Cheers.

This is how people SHOULD be seeing Orcas. In the ocean, with their families, swimming free. I didn't see ONE collapsed dorsal fin or logging Orca in that pod. They all looked happy. And I'm GLAD none of these precious babies will be snatched away to be taken to Seaworld Prison.

To everyone in their feelings crying out, "Orca are not whales, they are dolphins!" Dolphins ARE toothed whales. Another well known toothed whale is the Sperm Whale. You know what else Orca and Sperm whales have in common, besides having teeth? They use echolocation. Yup, that is a toothed whale thing. Blue, Minke, Humpback and the other whales that have baleen are called Baleen whales.

downtown82 Sea World hasn't captured a single Orca for 35 years now and isn't planning to do so in the future. A year ago, they announced to cancle the breeding program and shift the common orca shows from entertainment to education that are about their behaviors and social interaction They are also redesigning their aquariums to respond to this to imitate the orcas' natural surrounding. A step that is overdue, I guess. And drones are always only used to keep track of the orcas or to check if everything is alright when Sea World Rescue Teams release animals that had prior gotten injured.

Capturing these whales is OUT OF THE QUESTION! Do you know how traumatic and violent a capture would be for them? This community has already had to deal with SeaWorld ripping babies away from their clans! We all want to help them, but a capture isnt the way to do it. Increase to the number of salmon that they can feed on will be more effective and will help the population to recover.

Sadly, J 50, the baby Orca that jumped out of the water died last year. From 81 whales in the Southern Resident whale they are down to 75 today. Praying that we are not too late.

There was 74 after J50 died. Now with the birth of a new baby in J and L pod, the number is 76. There was not 81 whales when Scarlet was alive...

In that case: Those private persons can keep fishing, they don't take much, of what's available. Cutting the travel roots of salmons with dams, and industrial fishing is way more of an issue.

Orcas have nothing to do with strandings of other dolphins or whales. Cetaceans strand for a wide range of reasons - if they are sick or injured, confusion, hunting mistakes, sonar blasts, migration mistakes, strong waves can push them towards the beach, ect.

Resident killer whales like these do venture out to sea during the winter months, but they return to the same waters during the spring and summer. They come to the Salish Sea to raise children and hunt for the annual salmon runs. Because they return to the same local area every year, they are known as Resident whales. The resident killer whales are facing starvation because of a lack of food. The snake river dams block vital salmon breeding grounds and prevent thousands young salmon from reaching the ocean again. If the dams were to be bypassed (which is a very easy thing to do) the number of Chinook Salmon would rise and the whales would have enough to eat. They also face pollution, fishing, and noise disturbances, but the need for food is the most pressing issue. damsense.org/ Transient killer whales are the ones that roam the oceans in search of marine mammals to hunt and feed on.

See orcas in the wild. Don't see the dolphin show. They stole orcas from the ocean. Lolita is still at the Miami Seaquarium after being kidnapped in 1970. She's been in prison for 51 years

Kevin Lew it would make more sense, to stop blocking the salmons going there with the dams. Breeding the amount of salmons you'd need to even feed a single pod might be close to impossible, it's just better, to let take nature it's course. And thinking about what they said, there are 81 orcas, which could easily be 4 pods. As I said: Nature knows, what it's doing, survival of the fittest is a thing, and orcas are the fittest sea creatures, if we'd let them

harooni22 pretty much what I said in my first sentence. But I agree.. Honestly... It's more likely that we could "produce" salmon to give it to humans (the demand isn't as high as some make it out to be), rather than breeding them for orcas. When you take an adult orca, and put that size into relation of a salmon, I wouldn't be surprised, when one orca alone eats more salmon per day, than the average human per month or even year. But the orcas in that area NEED the salmon, we don't. As I said.. just let nature take it's course.. all that geo shaping, dams and whatever.. It's all on the expense of wildlife. In this case important and quite rare wildlife.

The "farming" of salmon (Atlantic salmon) on the BC coast is a large part of the problem. Disease and lice in these open net pens is contaminating and diminishing (devastating) the wild stocks of salmon. These salmon farms need to be moved onto land and out of the migratory routes of wild salmon. Please look up and support Alexandra Morton for her efforts on this subject and raise awareness.
