Wonderful. Thanks. The more a disabled 90 year old like myself is “swaddled” through increasing immobility, the less distraction there is, giving room to a greater understanding and opening of spiritual things, if one gives it all to God. +

In Bethlehem a Jewish tour guide now Eastern Catholic told us that the shepherds in Beth. were actually staffers employed by the Temple, I found that very interesting, those lambs were the important lambs sold for Temple sacrifice; the seeing of the baby in a manger would likely be the feeding stalls of lambs; the baby born in the House of Bread is also showing he is lamb to be sacrificed and food for our souls.

Bishop Baron, Not knowing where else to leave this comment I am leaving it here. Please help all of us who strive to understand the teachings of the Catholic faith and live a life in conformity with the teachings of the Church-- what does this blessing of same-sex relationships mean which the Vatican and Pope Francis have released TODAY. What has been released makes no sense in the light of the teachings of the church from the church's inception. Furthermore, doesn't this also now call into question the use of contraception by heterosexual couples who are not open to life. How will the Church maintain doctrinal authority going forth on any and all issues from here? Theologically this appears to be disastrous and socially suicidal. What in the name of Heaven is going on?

Amen. Christ is victor and the Church still stands. Interesting observation on the years of Christ's hidden life, patiently waiting for the time to reveal himself or perhaps taking the time to prepare himself. I'm also reminded of Odysseus when he returns from his tribulations and journey. Enemies have overrun his property and oppressed his family. Rather than jumping right into action, Odysseus disguises himself and goes undercover just to observe, plan and strategize. He takes his time to figure out the situation and what moves to make, finding the right opening to carry out a course of action. Of course, we shouldn't kid ourselves in thinking that enemies aren't doing the same thing. Think of the Omen movies. Often in history there is lots of espionage and years of secrecy predating the outright warfare for all to see.

Maybe the significance of the shepherd isn’t so much their lowliness, as the fact that the symbol of kingship in the Old Testament is one of a shepherd. I have heard your description of the status of shepherd at the time of Jesus. Where is the source of that statement? Because I have also heard it said that it is possible that the flocks that they were tending were the ones intended for temple sacrifice, so wouldn’t that have been considered a necessary job?

I think that the infancy narratives in Matthew and Luke perform the same function as the prologue John’s gospel, and indeed, the very short prologue in Mark‘s (This is the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God). All the gospels begin the adult life of Jesus with the ministry of John the Baptist. I think that the infancy narratives like the other two prologues are the gospel writers setting out who they think Jesus was and is. These are not biographies in the modern sense of the word biography, everything in the gospels serves to tell us the readers, who, and what the writers, and the communities in which they lived and worshipped, thought Jesus was.
@marcussmall782 Жыл бұрын
@@MichaelW23-s9v i’m slightly agnostic about that, they could be simply midrash, aimed at doing in a storytelling way, what Mark does, in a simple sentence, and John does in a poetic way, or they could be midrash with biographical elements. whilst it’s true, there are other virgin birth stories. I think the resemblance is superficial. The reason why we have the virgin birth in the story of Jesus is because Matthew was using a Greek translation of Isaiah 7:14 which uses the word virgin in a way that the Hebrew is a bit more ambiguous. I think finally that our age is rather obsessed , with the historical sense of scripture. That is a very modern concern.

@@RGlennon I haven’t watched the whole video yet, but I agree with Bishop Barron on the detail that we find at the beginning of the nativity story. What the story is giving us is that contrast between the most powerful person in the domination system of the day, and this child who is set to change the world. We see the exactly the same thing at the beginning of Mark’s Gospel, in a much pithier way , this is the victory proclamation of Jesus the king and son of God. We moderns tend to come to the text with the question, ‘is this historically true?’, whilst in early centuries people were not indifferent to that question, the more important question for them, and for the writer, was, ‘what does this mean? ‘And I agree with with Bishop Barron about the meaning.

Hello Bishop Barron, I will really like to hear your viewpoint on Pope Francis’ approval to bless gay couples. I am a priest myself and many times I have encountered faithful Catholics who believe that Pope Francis is confusing them, that he is making them waver in their faith. One deeply concerned mother said to me, “Father, I really no longer know what to teach my children because of the Pope’s swinging between right and wrong.” Please, I really want to hear from you. Personally, I feel so distressed by what Pope Francis is saying and teaching. He does not own the Church. He’s not the founder of the Church. Sadly, I feel like he’s behaving like the owner and founder of the Christian faith. It’s so depressing.
@marlenesabiooliva7667 Жыл бұрын
As a lay person, what I understand about the blessing is on the person and not on the relationship. Because the Pope reiterated that marriage is between a man and a woman. As for me Pope Francis’ stand is crystal clear.
@docgillygun9531 Жыл бұрын
As a lay person as well, I wonder if perhaps the blessing is an acknowledgement that God still loves them, and despite the fact that they are sinners, they are no different as we are all sinners. It's the same as Jesus with the prostitute being stoned, he who has not sinned may cast the first stone. Us mortal sinners can render our judgment, but the real and final judgment and summation of an individual sinners life is not for us to render. Sexual orientation is 1 facet of an entire existence. But I do agree that God commanded that we reproduce and be fruitful once joined in marriage. Gay marriage therefore is a terminal end where in reality our species cannot flourish. But I agree, to see our most holy of elders arguing to the point of dissention is worrisome and my logical conclusion is divine intervention is likely not far off.
@BlessedAssurance2007 Жыл бұрын
On the issue of blessing gay couples, I vehemently disagree with Pope Francis. I don’t agree with him no matter how nuanced his case is made. Actually, blessing a heterosexual couple who are yet to enter into the sacrament of matrimony is qualitatively different from blessing a homosexual couple. The heterosexual couple has a clear path to getting married in the church eventually, but homosexual couple don’t. Usually, when I speak to heterosexual couples who are not married in the church, but want their babies baptized, I always inquire why they haven’t married: “Who is delaying it?” I always ask. But I cannot ask a gay couple the same question. The Catholic Church still considers homosexuality a sin. Isn’t it? In the areas of tackling climate change, fighting poverty, and addressing immigration etc, I support the Pope Francis. But on this matter of blessing gay couples, my response is No! This will definitely cause a “steady drip, drip, drip” shift towards the normalization of gay marriage in the Catholic Church. Watch out what’s going to happen. Blessing gay couples is a victory for gay advocates. Are they going to stop there? Not all! They will continue to push and push until who knows, Pope Francis or the one after him “bows to pressure” and issue a decree permitting gay marriage in the Catholic Church. I pray that many bishops and priests will resist this move.
@docgillygun9531 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you on that issue of not allowing gay couples to be married in the Catholic Church. That is absolute sin and a dead end to mankind. The Bible is very clear on that. And I agree, there would be creep if that, as well as allowing female priests was condoned. The Bible is clear on that. I suppose what I am trying to say is that God is merciful and does not expect a mortal to be perfect. With that being said, I would imagine God still loves each individual gay or straight. Therefore, I believe God, and any God believing person, can indeed make a blessing for a gay person or gay couple, and show them kindness and mercy without judgment and from a place of love and acceptance but also without agreeing with their free will. God is forgiving and always looking to guide and support. But the Bible draws a firm boundary, and that is the word of God, so it must not be crossed.@@BlessedAssurance2007

Good morning! I think Luke's passage signifies that Jesus in swaddling clothes isn't a symbol of poverty. God wants us to be low as to be humble and unspoken faces of human beings. I know Jesus couldn't have been poor because he received a profitable gifts like gold, frankincense, and myrrh at birth. Even Jesus'parents Mary and Joseph lived and traveled in style. Baby Jesus is on His throne and we are co-heirs with Him through the work he did from the manger to the cross. They'd experienced bullied at that time because people saw them as a competition that's why there was no space reserved for Jesus when he came. There was no hospitality, there was no welcome. There was severe overcrowding in and around Bethlehem, and the residents and visitors alike were unwilling or unable to receive Jesus when he was born. I wish Caesar had helped them at that time. Bullying is a serious problem for humanity. They were jealous of the Blessed Vergin Mary for the fact she swaddled the baby Jesus very observantly and lovingly mother. The swaddle clothes found in the managers are a sign of a shepherd (Like 2:12). After Jesus' death, they'd swaddle Him again in a linen cloth on the hillside. In contrast, the swaddling cloth from the manager helps me to be safe and secure from left and right attacks of bullying It's my great aid, and I feel more comfortable when people insult me persecute me, and falsely say all kinds of evil against me because of Jesus Christ. Remember to rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you (Matthew 5:10-12) . Jesus is the king and God of my life( I am tire). Jesus, I trust in You!!! St. Joseph, pray for us.
