a long time ago an exploiter named Chrisaster gave me a DLL that whielisted an old gmod exploit that allowed you to download the server.cfg file (simply by typing download_file server.cfg in console in any server); from there you could run lua on anyone by having rcon clearance. it's been long patched out but my guess (with source code being leaked to the public) someone finally figured out how to reimplement this previously blacklisted function

@@OneZerky This isn't something you learn, bro. You have to have knowledge of exploitation. Eg, You'd need to find a backdoor plugin or a exploit vun in a lua code plugin or addon or etccccccccc. im going to share a little tip here when running a gmod server, never ever download leaked addons from weird sites, this is how shabeel infected everything bc these people that ran this server didnt wanna pay for addons for there gmod server so they downloaded leaked ones and look at what happened LMAO

The real reason this happens is because of unprotected network variables. This can happen even from legitimate addons if the author did not bother or did not know to secure their network variable their addons listen to. Unprotected net vars are very easy to take advantage of. Easiest way to prevent it is to make sure network receivers have proper admin checks and that the input data is sanitized correctly. Thanks KZbin for removing my comment which went more in depth about preventing these issues.
