This song takes me back to when my brother was diagnosed with leukemia. He would play the whole album of third eye blind over and over. All of these songs, but especially this one hits me hard. I miss him so much. He was only 16 when he passed away. 💕

The same for me... My best friend died of leukemia at the age of 21, back in 2004 and we would play this CD over and over and over... He loved this group. This song and God of Wine will always remind me of him.. Its been 15 years and it still hurts to hear this song.

"Where's that crazy girl? You don't get drunk on red wine and fight no more" is my favorite lyric in this song. They probably had a fucked up relationship but a passion that sucked them back in. Also the intro to this is so beautiful.

For me this song is a tribute to an ex boyfriend of mine who died from his heroin problem recently. The lyrics makes me think of how I still have him in my heart, and how he's always with me, even in the small things every day. Sometimes I talk to him. I know he's at peace now and for that I am happy, but the earthly part of it makes me miss him for the good times we had. I still wish I had spent more time with him and just be good friends.

This is one of those debut albums that just blows you the fuck away. Lyrics that speak to you, from their soul to yours. These songs are timeless. Thank you 3Eb. My Noopster was 7 yrs old at the time and sang along to How's it Gonna Be, this , and God of Wine. She also played a mean air guitar, complete with convincing ugly faces. She felt it, definitely a recycled soul.

Third Eye Blind has recently definitively become my favorite band of all time. I got their "A Collection" album in high school and loved it for the singles and it was not until somebody told me "Dude their whole first album is perfect! You can't just listen to the singles!" that I delved into them more. I got their first album and it was the soundtrack to my freshmen year of college and I loved it all. Just recently as a junior in college I picked up Blue and have been streaming Out of the Vein almost nonstop. I've even dipped into Ursa Major a bit too. And here's the kicker to me: it's all brilliant to me. Stephan is one of the greatest vocalists that I have ever heard due to the way his voice perfectly compliments the bands music. Like I can't even put into words how good it is to me. Recently though I somehow found this song again and I appreciate it like I never have before. It's so perfect like that moment your alone with a girl you love and the complete assuredness that she feels the same and that you can depend on each other. It would make a great song for the last dance at a prom. It's a far under-appreciated gem. Anyway well that's my pouring out of how much I love this song and this band. #3ebForever

+Andrew Almond brilliant words mate... I sometimes think to myself why the band is so underated when I love them so much, I mean I am from England so I suppose they were mainly massive in California really, but I was always trying to get people to listen to them lol... although I am grateful in a way how there not as big as they should be so it makes me appreciate the fact I managed to discover them when I did. my absolute faves is this and "I want you"... simply mesmeric

Let me put it this way: Have you ever felt like your life was in high gear, and you were right in the moment, and you were happy, and rolling into some glorious unknown future? And then have that all taken away? And then lived in sort of the post-period of that high? That's what it's like to live in the background." ~Stephan Jenkins............ I just shared this with my heartbroken 20 year old son to let him know that we have ALL been there and that it is possible for life after this death.. but goddamn its so fucking hard. I didnt have the heart to tell him that it never really goes away. It just fades into the background of what middling life we try to forge for ourselves. Does one ever get over that one true love? I don't think so..

Stephan Jenkins is one of the best lyricists in rock music. What he writes is smart and witty without being presumptuous. They're easy to understand and relate to without being too foreward. They still have a dark and mysterious quality. I hate when ppl talk down about 3eb and say that they're all about the "doo doo doos" and that they just another 90s "one hit wonder" type band. "Lit" was a one hit wonder crappy 90s band. Third Eye Blind is so much more. Those ppl obviously have never heard " I Want You", "My Hit and Run", " Another Life", "Company", "Thanks a Lot", " London", "Darwin", etc. etc. I could go on and on. They're so under rated. Not only are Jenkins's lyrics amazing, Kevin Cadogen's style of guitar playing is second to none. The outtro in this song (The Background) is awesome. I liked Tony Fredianelli on guitar after Cadogen left, but now he's gone too. I wasn't a huge fan of "Ursa Major", so I'm surprised to say that I've been listening to and enjoying "Dopamine" a lot. Still, I can't help but wonder what 3eb would be putting out if Kevin Cadogen was still with them.

When the non-hits are better than the hits. God of Wine, The Background and Motorcycle Drive By, are way better than Semi-Charmed Life, Graduate and Losing a Whole Hear.

I wish I could find an acoustic live version of them playing this song. I would give money for it.

I remember when I was 11 in 1997, and my mother bought me this CD -- and obviously my mother had no idea what it was about.

Forgot all about this song. Somehow I failed to notice this song wasn't on my iPod until I went and put the CD into my car stereo. I've been missing so much.

Not ashamed to admit the first time I heard this song was at the end of an episode of Cupid, starring Jeremy Piven and Paula Marshall, easily one of the best albums I've heard in the last 3 decades

"We were" and "we're" are completely different. "We're" is him saying, "I felt you long after we are through." We're is "we are". "I felt you long after we were through." Is the correct lyrics. Any place "we're" is used should be "we were".

Everything is quiet, Since you're not around, And I live in the numbness now. In the background. I do the things we did before, I walk Haight Street to the store, And they say where's that crazy girl? You don't get drunk on red wine, and fight no more, 'Cause I don't see you anymore, Since the hospital, But the plans I make still have you in them, Then you come swimming into view, And I'm hanging on your words like I always used to do, The words they use so lightly, I only feel for you, I only know this because I carry you around, In the background. Words they come and memories all repeat, I lift your head while, They change the hospital sheets, I would never lie to you, No I would never lie to you, No I felt you long after we were through. And the plans I make still have you in them, Cause you come swimming into view, And I'm hanging on your words like I always used to do, The words they use so lightly, I only feel for you, I only know this because I carry you around, In the background.
