The protagonist really just went from unlucky person to deserved punishment awful fast once you pick up more of the story. Good on Little Timmy I suppose, hopefully they get to rest after this sad business. The Backrooms functioning as a sort of purgatory is a neat spin on the idea. What works here the most though is genuinely good scares. It really wants to test that mic sensitivity.

The thing chasing you is basically the monster-fide, unrested and no doubt very angry spirit of Timmy getting his revenge. The place you're stuck in is basically hell since your character died at the beginning when he fell off his skateboard.

He's kind of right in a roundabout way, though. By killing the kid for no good reason, they all constructed those rooms. They just didn't enter the rooms until the brink of death and dying, that's all. But I can guarantee you, in such a case any one of them turned in repentance and prayed to God sincerely... Things would be different. - Signed, one who had one weird dream when I fell asleep outside in the cold as I waited for my dog to be done outside. I went into a dream within a dream, to a strange land... And I wouldn't wake up or get up except at the point when I prayed The Lord's Prayer. And at that point, the sky had changed and I started going back through the dream where a look-alike replaced me. I replaced him back, and I came back to reality...

@steelkrill the game has a lot of positives. but knowing its based off real life murder(s) makes this feel so... gross horror is a way for people to approach topics that are difficult and taboo. but by making something up we allow ourselves to see it with a separation from real life and without guilt that it has caused real harm. the line can be blurred sometimes, and a work of fiction can impact real life people and what they think using a real life murder of a child, having it be in some way replayed and having the child be represented as a monster is not giving it the nuance necessary, and it doesnt feel like its done with respect or in a way that draws attention to the harm, feels more like shock value. another comment mentioned the radio narration felt almost comedic, so please dont use real life horrors as basis for games, unless its gonna be treated with nuance and care

i like a lot about this game. it admittedly looks a little exhausting, not explicitly in a bad way, there's just a Lot of pretty intense jumpscares. it's neat to see them used with such gameplay intrinsic purpose though, in terms of trying to get a reaction out of the player to summon the monster. i definitely like seeing more involved gameplay in general introduced to backrooms themed games.

While the atmosphere is well built in the first half, I feel like the story presentation is so weak it immediately dissolves everything the game works to create. Personally I think it gives too much too soon too bluntly. Maybe the news broadcast being doled as you play rather than being front loaded. Starting with a missing child report then as you're being chased you hear the mother's impassioned plea from a radio to please help find her son. With the ghost in pursuit it raises the tension about hearing more of the story or trying to stop the sound so you can hide. Then at the climax the radio reports that his body has been found, perhaps mentioning that it was dismembered but not going into any graphic detail. Along the way you're finding hints about what happened while the boy was kidnapped, like his yellow jacket and pants that would have been described by the missing child report or a bloody hammer. You organically learn about the kidnapping, torture, amputation and eventual beheading. This can culminate in a final autopsy report towards the end, but giving players a chance to piece it all together themselves would be more satisfying and make you feel just a bit grosser about how it all went down. And then the final shots could be the VHS, but I would say make them silent with just the boy unattended in the woods(sneak some date and time stamps in there for attentive players) and then The End. I would leave out the skater dying, leave out the fucking Spicy Fried Chicken(was this sponsored by KFC??) and if you absolutely must, include an article that the protagonist and his friends being under investigation. This was so promising, but it lacks subtlety and polish. ┐(‘～`;)┌

@@fishfood8711 that would also explain the childs name. i didn't mention it because it seemed petty, and perhaps its just me but when I hear everyone saying 'Little Timmy' including official broadcast and reports, it takes me right out of the experience. Its just the most generic, first name you think of when you must name a little boy people are supposed to care about. As in 'oooh Timmy's in the well, we gotta do something.' if someone had just called him Timothy (Or hell, even a casual 'Tim') it would make the boy feel less like a prop. The chicken is kind of the same problem. Also maybe personally, because fried chicken is already kind of a pain in the ass to make, but why is everyone mentioning Spicy Fried Chicken as his favorite food like it's a proper noun and somehow matters at all? Even a teenager waiting for execution for a kidnapping and brutal murder is very clear that Little Timmy loved Spicy Fried Chicken. Not just fried chicken. Or even like, 'I saved him a him a drumstick when my friends and I made it for ourselves' because I have no idea how three teenagers managed to hide the ungodly mess that is making fried chicken at home from a single adult in their lives in order to feed it to a child in their basement. Or even just saying directly they just ordered in the fried chicken and got a spicy serving for him because they remembered what his mom said. His Mother mentioning it makes sense, but I dont think a single food has tugged less on my heart strings than Spicy Fried Chicken

But i will point out that someone else in the comments said it, unfortunately, based on a real case were the victim’s favorite meal was KFC, snd the autopsy report found fried chicken in his stomach. I think the focus on “Spicy Fried Chicken” is because A) they can’t say KFC for multiple reasons, and B) is suppose to be like a knife twist for the protag.

Teenagers killing for fun is something that really does exist. In my own state two young adults tried to kill their friend's brother just for fun. Luckily the kid survived. They weren't even angry with the kid or his brother. When asked they just said they wanted to see if they can get away with that.

Can confirm. The game is basically a 1st person Silent Hill type affair. Main character is sent into purgatory for a crime they committed, and has to fight the manifestations of inner turmoil. Has nothing to do with The Backrooms themselves.

_MBH response to scares: _*_ANIME_* Poor Timmy. Difficult to understand the motivation of the teens. I guess they were just bored. Famously, Leopold and Loeb wanted to see if they could pull off the perfect murder for the heck of it, also choosing a child as an easy target. Hearing those footsteps outside a closed door was enough to freak me out. I wish there were even more random odd noises to spook you vs the jump scares and loud screams. I know they are something to lure Timmy towards you as you are supposed to scream yourself but maybe less of those to appreciate the subtle ones even more. And lol, you ain't getting our MBH to scream! Cool take on the Backrooms.

Looking at the room with little timmy's shrine all I could think was how the items in the room could be broken down and recycled as makeshift weapons XD. Honestly, who even cares? You’re not escaping. You’re eventually gonna just starve to death or die from dehydration. I’d say take the quick and easy way out (eg: getting killed by a monster or create something that can take you out as painlessly as possible)

The issue with that is, in most backroom stories there is nothing to make use of. The original creepy pasta that spawned the entire thing goes out of it's way to describe how empty and barren the backrooms actually are. It's literally just hundreds of miles of empty rooms.

Those footsteps sound effects gave me PTSD about the monster from Trenches. Headphones made it way worse, the suspense was unreal. Edit: Just looked into it and found out the same guy made this game. He's got a talent for atmosphere, but I wish he wouldn't recycle jumpscares like the whisper in the ear, the footprints, etc.

The jumpscares are meant to try and get a reaction out of the person playing. Even if it's an unenthusiastic grunt, the mic would pick up the sound and alert the monster to the player's location if it's close enough to hear it. The jump scares aren't meant to be there for the sake of being cheap, they have actual gameplay purposes.

The thing I see with the microphone gimmick is, unless it's a multiplayer game like Phasmophobia, it would only really get used by let's players and streamers. Since they have to talk to their viewers and occasionally read text on screen (and fake scream). And if you're playing solo you don't have to talk or even have a mic active.

TBH, not much. Backrooms are liminal spaces, places that are unsettling by themselves. Entities are a result of this distorted reality, and everything is mysterious. This purgatory vibe hits more silent hill than backrooms style. Just take the "backroom" part of it, and this game is perfect

To be fair, a big empty space of the same repeating patterns would be fairly boring to play through. There just isn't much you could do with that setting. Also from my understanding the backrooms started out as a 4chan post, and the idea of "something" being in the backrooms with you was added near immediately after its inception (on the same thread I believe) Personally I rather like the expanded backrooms lore. It gets stupid, fanficy, overly messy, and redundant plenty of times...but there are also plenty of additions that are wonderful settings and thought experiments of their own. I'd personally love to see a full fledged game/MMO of the expanded lore with items, levels, and entities and the such...but realistically I don't think that's feasible.

Mechanics-wise, this isn't that bad. The VHS filter is alright for the most part but eventually gets to the level where I would be looking for an option to turn it off about two thirds in. The mechanic with the microphone is a nice little novelty but probably makes the game very easy if you don't have a microphone or don't plug it in. Story-wise... I'm not at all impressed. The whole "you were the real monster all along" thing is getting old real fast and in this instance I wasn't given enough to suspend my disbelief. A much better story would have been a prank gone too far, maybe have them chase Timmy and the kid breaks his neck trying to escape or something. This... I'm having a hard time connecting the personalities involved to the act that was committed. Also, while I'm not invested in the universe enough to get fussy about calling this a "Backrooms" game, the whole "Backrooms = Hell" doesn't seem to fit the theme of the Backrooms. Limbo would probably be more appropriate.
