The Bad Batch Episode 5 BREAKDOWN - BEAUTIFUL REDEMPTION

Mount Tantiss is a super secret imperial facility that no one knows the location to, so they decide to fire up Nala Se’s data pad to get some information. I think this could lead to them finding out that Tech is indeed alive there, and perhaps being experimented on. They want to see what’s in the vault, and to get schematics on the entry points to the base. However, it’s imperially encrypted. Crosshair tells them that if you plug it into an imperial computer, the encryption will be bypassed. So they head back to Crosshair’s previous mission on Barton IV, the ice planet. Now we know why this episode is called the return. Because Echo returns, and so does Crosshair with his brothers, and his return to the ice planet.
As they prepare, Wrecker tells Omega not to worry about Hunter constantly eyeing him, he’s just being protective. Clearly crosshair is understanding of the situation and of his own wrongdoings as we see later in the episode at the end. Wrecker gives Crosshair his old armour and he observes it.
As they land on the ice terrain of Barton IV, they exit the ship and Crosshair wears his old armour and it looks epic.
As they get to the abandoned depot, they divert power, and hook up the data pad.
Crosshair walks off into a room as the boys configure the console and he picks up the frozen clone trooper helmets from Commander Mayday and his men who patrolled the station. As Hunter watches, he starts to observe there’s more to Crosshair, that there’s some human in him after all. A story to be understood. Later outside, he confronts him, where Crosshair tells him he betrayed the Empire by killing an imperial officer. He told him he risked everything to tell him and warn him. He blames Hunter for his failure which caused Omega to be captured, and they almost fight as Crosshair tells him the only reason he’s mad is because it was him who saved Omega and not Hunter.
A massive ice worm breaks out from underneath the ice and tries to eat them all. The team all work together like old old times to reactivate the system that sends a frequency out to keep the creature at bay, like a dog whistle.
They eventually overcome the beast by working together and they remember that they are brothers after all.
Crosshair tells him that he’s done things he regrets, that he thought he was being a good solider with following the empire. and Hunter tells him no one really understood what was happening back then. He regrets things too, and all they can do is to keep trying to be better.
This is the whole motif of Star Wars, that no matter what you’ve done in life, as long as you correct your ways and change, that it’s never too late. This is the story of redemption, of Anakin Skywalker, the hero’s journey and the mantra for life.
I think the next episode will be about asajj ventures, as this one ends on a happy note, as they now get the information they need to find Mount Tantiss and free the clones, as well as perhaps find Tech who I really believe is still alive and being tested on.
I think Asajj, somehow, is back in the picture, and she’s a bounty hunter who could be hired to find the bad batch and once she does, ends up joining them.

Honestly I didn’t see anyone complaining about this episode. It wasn’t like the season 1 filler episodes of Omega trusting strangers and shit. We actually had important character development and got Crosshairs to start giving some answers for what he did. That’s just from what I’ve seen though.

To me, a filler episode is where they go on some random adventure (for example, a box of fruits gets stuck in a cave full of monsters) and things revert to normal afterward like nothing happened. This episode was far from filler.

It progressed the main story which is liberating the clones from the mystery base (which some of our characters escaped from). This episode gave Echo and Rex more info to help them liberate the clones, so to me this is absolutely no filler. This is the way to do character development imo

Could be. It’s also very likely it could be a physical symptom of severe PTSD. The guy is clearly super traumatized, in a way the rest of his squad isn’t. The actions he took with that rifle have had very real consequences and he has to live with that now - it no wonder he freezes up and shakes when he tries to shoot. It’s also interesting how he begins connecting with the space dog Batcher a lot in this episode - again another traumatized vet parallel, many with severe PTSD have emotional service animals. Ryan over at Screen Crush pointed this out (along with the worm being an interesting parallel for emotional issues hiding under the surface) and a bunch of vets chimed in the comments. It’ll be interesting to see if anything changes with his hand as he shares more of his story and gains support from his team.

Yeah. It has been amazing. Seasons one and two felt good, but season 3 really feels like it's for adults, while 1 and 2 felt more like they targeted teenagers. I really, really like the deeper character building and darkness of season 3. It feels like it's mixing Bad Batch seasons 1 and 2 with Andor. It's amazing!

In case anyone is wondering: Crosshair’s hand is messed up because of the blood extractions they would do on his hand in Hemlock’s lab. Just as Omega had blood drawn from her hand everyday as part of “standard routine”, one of the clones shown in a scene in Ep1 was shown having this same procedure done, holding his hand in visible pain afterward. We can only assume it was the same deal with crosshair; the severity of his hand is likely a testament to how long he was imprisoned

I really enjoyed this episode and the way they handled all the tension of Crosshair's return to the group. I appreciate the character's evolution, even in subtle details, and how he listens to Omega, genuinely caring about her safety. It was great to see him wearing the old armor. Furthermore, the mission alongside Mayday was crucial for this transformation, and the scene of him arranging the helmets of the deceased Clones at the base was truly beautiful.

I used to think that cross hair was bad But then I realized that in season 1 ep 1 crosshairs acted differently the second order 66 was issued, because his chip was activated. He was darker, and being wierd. They mention it like 3 times. But despite this the chip wasn’t fully active and cross hair still reluctantly went back with his squad at the end to get omega. It wasn’t until tarkin ordered the intensified programming of the chip that he went to try to kill them. In ep 3 of that same season we see that those sessions of intensifying the chip were not a one time thing. As there’s a cold open of them doing it to him again. All the bad things he did before the bracca insodent were the chip, not him. After he had the chip removed his brain was prob still messed up, but at this point he prob was mad his team left him. In season 2 he already has doubts about the empire from the beginning but dose missions cause he was a soldier following orders. What he was programmed or do.

I still don't think Crosshair had his chip removed. After the empire intensified the Chip's effects, I highly doubt they would've allowed Crosshair to remove his chip. They either told Crosshair it was removed when they really didn't remove it or Crosshair is lying about it being removed

ScreenCrush made a great point that Crosshair’s tremor could likely be psychological rather than physical - meaning PTSD. I guess physical symptoms are somewhat common, and we see it show up when Hunter mentions the Empire. It’s clear that Crosshair has deep scars from the things he did in the name of being a good soldier with a purpose.

Batcher as the tracker/guard dog of the group is a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Also, glad that Crosshair and Hunter worked it out over the course of the mission, burying the hatchet between them. Also, it's sweet of him for burying the helmets of the clones that used to be there until their untimely death. He finally returned to the light.

I thought it was very good. I fully expected there to be tension, particularly between Hunter and Crosshair. Which there was. Interesting they wound up back where Crosshair was fully betrayed by the empire and killed Lieutenant Nolan. Crosshair picking up the helmets of the clones and arranging them as sort of a memorial was a great touch. Crosshair has really shown a ton of development. It sorta felt like a custody battle when Crosshair and Hunter were arguing about how Omega got out of Tantiss with Crosshair's help. Even seeing some humor with Crosshair "No hug for me?" And of course great to have Echo back. This episode absolutely was NOT filler. Side note: if you turn subtitles on there are a couple times when Theory mentions Assajj Ventress, and the subtitles read "ass ventress" 😅😅 Ep rating: 8/10 The humanization of Crosshair and his true regrets for what he did under the service of the Empire was fantastic.

The show started with Crosshair questioning Hunters abilities as a leader. Hunters sacrifice makes sense especially if Tech is alive and being experimented on. First Crosshair was left behind and was experimented on. Then Omega, now Tech. Hunter not wanting something like that happening again makes sense and sacrificing himself. Going full circle and showing Crosshair that Hunter is a good squad leader and teaching him how to carry the squad forward.

They did say that they took Dark Deciples into account with bringing Ventress back, so my best guess is that Vos took her to a night sister or perhaps some other Star Warzy healing process took place to revive her. I love the fact that she is back, super cool sith, but there are too many "somehow Palpatine has returned" moments in Star Wars. Like what's next, Fives gonna make an appearance next episode while the boys are in some room and be like, "is there an Echo in here?"

A few disagreements on your analysis. 1. His shaky hand could be related to the gas Hemlock released on capturing him when Crosshair went to alert his brothers about the plan to capture Omega. Probably why Hemlock has his hand in a glove and is always favoring it. He did tell Crosshair he tested it on himself and is now immune. It could also be related to PTSD, since Crosshair has gone through a lot over the course of his story-arc. 2. Tech is dead. We should all deal with it. He's not coming back. If there is a clone on Mount Tantiss that we know of, it could be Cody. Cody was a super-trooper in Legends, no? So it's possible he was that trooper we saw at the elevator in Episode 3 this season. Though, I hope we find Cody safe and joining the forces storming Mount Tantiss. 3. I think Echo and Hunter will meet their demise and Wrecker and Crosshair will survive with Omega. That's my personal opinion. 4. Ventris won't be hunting the Bad Batch. Bane will be, of course. Maybe Fett as well, though he's quite young still, maybe a couple years older than Omega. I will agree Vader will turn up, but it is a kid's show so not sure how menacing they'd want to use him. I'm theorizing that the whole M-count transfer is dealing with Anakin's blood and not Palpatine's. The reason for this is, Skywalker's blood had a metachlorian level that was "off the charts." Palpatine is the type that would want to clone himself, but to use Vader's blood to create a more powerful Sith Lord. Now, if this is the case, then maybe Rey would truly be a Skywalker. :)

After watching this week’s episode I immediately went back to watch The Outpost and a few things I sort of remembered upon seeing it is how Mayday, Hex and Veech were all sitting in that storage room surrounded by their brother’s helmets that were propped on top of the cargo. In The Return the helmets are scattered onto the floor, with the addition of Mayday’s. That means when the empire loaded up the cargo crates they just tossed the helmets to the side, just like the clones themselves were. Also wow a lot of snow stacked up between the two episodes. And the ice vulture was shown a lot as well and I’m sure there’s some sort of symbolism in that.

Someone gave me a cool theory that when Crosshair got hit with the Venator-class Star Destroyer's ION Engine in S1 he absorbed a lot of radiation and developed a brain tumor that causes the tremor. A little out there if you ask me but it would be a interesting tie-in that the action that causes Crosshair to loose his super soldier genetic enhancements was done to him by his own squad/brothers

This was nowhere near a filler episode. It's setting up Echo and Rex going to Tantiss, it gave Crosshair back his armor, which we will see in future episodes, it created good chemistry for the Batch, and it was just really solid. 9/10, really great episode!

One interesting small detail I noticed, is that Hunter's right shoulder plate is now much smaller. I'm guessing this is symbolizing that their armor is becoming more beaten and worn out. It was just weird to see Hunter's shoulder plate so small lol. Loved Crosshair and this episode.

The fact that Ryan and Mauler think these episodes are filler is proof they are either not watching it or are completely delusional. Probably both. Not every episode needs to be some crazy finale level episode. You gotta build to it. The originals did it, the prequels did it, and even Ryan's precious legends books, that he probably coddles every night, did it too. Not hating on legends. I just recognize that they are books and we're never even canon in George's eyes.

This was such a poignant and emotional episode. I didn't like Crosshair as character until now, which reveals great character development. He has become an interesting, complex character with much depth, showing remorse and wanting to make things right. I feel for him in terms of his hand twitch which I suspect would be due to brain probe experimentation.

Theory, the showrunners for the season have confirmed that they are not retconning the Dark Disciple novel. They said very explicitly that they're sticking true to the novel. That probably means that, yes, Asajj did die in Dark Disciple, but was revived by her nightsisters. The showrunners said this weeks or even months ago.

Loved the idea of someone sacrificing himself for Crosshair it gives something very special to his character, the thing is I don't see anybody dying that gives us that feeling of real REAL loss other than Hunter's leaving Crosshair as the potential new leader of the crew. but also the fact that he is the one sacrificing himself for Omega gives him full circle redemption to Hunter's eyes and to his character itself since (if I don't bad recall) he didn't want anything to do with Omega at the beginning of the series, so him bonding with her all this time has to do be very meaningful at the end.

In season two, Crosshair witnessed the true colours of the Empire when an Imperial Officer refused to provide medical treatment to his fellow Clone. This incident led him to shoot the officer. Crosshair had initially thought that he could be a better person by serving the Empire, but people like Vice Admiral Rampart proved to be prejudiced.
