As an Egyptian, I can attest to us being scammed too, almost on a daily basis. From groceries to furniture to almost everything you can imagine, but we obviously are better at evading it than tourists due to shared language and/or experiences. Also it varies from an Egyptian to another, some are better at evading scams than others, that was just my experience.

I run small group tours to Egypt every October and I can confirm that the worst part about Egypt is the constant hassling and the scams that come along with it. You mention that it's because of Egyptians needing to feed their families and how this is been getting worse since the revolution but to be honest it hasn't changed at all. I was in Egypt a year prior to the revolution and it was exactly the same. Now, I'm not saying that the situation/economy isn't worse now than it was before but what I will tell you is that absolutely nothing has changed when it comes to the hassles/scams that go down there. Traveling to Egypt independently can be incredibly frustrating which is why I decided to start running group tours there. Anyway, great job on all the videos. I've been watching closely. You've really represented what Egypt is all about. It's an incredible country with so much to see and do and despite the issues there, it remains to be one of my favorite countries in the world. -- Ryan

sad but true, it is a mentality that affects every transaction even for the locals. simply, if you are not 100% familiar with the market you are dealing in you will get scammed. say you are a first time car buyer or shopping for a musical instrument or any sort of spare parts or any other purchase you make only once or rarely, you HAVE to find an acquaintance that is an insider to that market and enlist their help or you are sure to get scammed. And everyone is a fair game, some even scam their family members :) it is a deeply rooted, widespread vulture-like mentality and i am not sure it is a result of hardship because it is there regardless of the conditions and there are enough honest people who have it hard as well.

Best advice I got before traveling to Egypt years ago (1998) - NEVER partake of any activity (including setting even a foot inside a taxi) until you arrive at a pre-arranged price. And expect to bargain hard. Personal experience - on my traveling companion's bucket list was to ride a camel at the pyramids. Although I had passed on the previous nugget of information to him, while I was wandering around taking photos and he wandered elsewhere, apparently one of the scammers talked him into camel rides for both of us. The next thing I know, here he comes jogging past me on his camel, swathed in Arab gear from head to toe, with another guy dressed in full Bedouin garb, followed by another camel ridden by it's presumed owner, who proceeded to scoop me up onto the camel with him, wrap a headdress around my head, and off we went, trotting rapidly around the pyramids (this was at Gizeh, just at the outskirts of Cairo). After about a 15-20 minute ride, (and me shrieking in his ear for half of it to let me down, dammit), we were both deposited back on the sands, and I wandered off in a bit of a daze. My companion comes running up to me with a desperate look on his face and says "I don't know what to do, he wants a hundred dollars (EACH!) for the ride!" I just started laughing, but my friend looked a bit terrified, apparently the guy was getting a bit belligerent about the fare. I asked my friend if he had pre-arranged a price and the guy was now trying to strong-arm him into paying this exorbitant amount. Nope. He admitted he hadn't fixed a price before climbing on his camel. Yeesh, lol. So I go over to the guy, who looks extremely intimidating and immediately starts shouting at me that we owe him $200. I shouted back at him (seemed to be the lingua franca of the deal at that point) who the heck did he think we were and how dumb did we look and hell no we were not giving him $200, we didn't even HAVE $200. He and I roared at each other for a few minutes and eventually arrived at $40 for both, which brought us in at around $20.00 per ride and we paid up. The cab driver on the ride home was shocked when we told him how much we paid, he said the going rate was about $7, but we considered the difference tuition and made sure not to make any similar mistakes again. I still have pictures of my friend on his camel, dressed in his finery. Makes me smile every time, so well worth the added expense. Hah, 20 years later, it's kind of nice to know some things don't change. Yeah. It's definitely a 'buyer beware' situation in Egypt, lol.

Invisible discounts my dear... He wanted 40 from the beginning. If he said 40 at the start you would have said no thats too much. This is how the world works from Amazon to the camels in Cairo 😉

That started to happen to me during my time there in 1989. The camel is laying down, the guy asks if I want to sit on his back for a photo. 25 piasters! I hand him my camera and jump up. Next thing I know, the camel stands up! So I'm up there yelling to get down. What do you know! 5 pounds to get off! Lucky for me, my EGYPTIAN HUSBAND comes walking up yelling in Arabic and the guy gets me off quick! Fortunately, I spent most of the three months there in Alexandria, the jewel of the Mediterranean....

I just came back from Egypt and I agree with everything you said. Most of the people are very nice and warm but bumping into scammers is practically unavoidable. The good thing is that the payoff (the attractions) is so awesome that it balances the experience. I think the key to having a good experience in Egypt is to explore the areas that are not touristy, eat at local places, so you meet people whose livelihood doesn't depend on getting money from tourists. They are the ones who wil make you fall in love with the country.

Thanks for this video mate. I've been travelling around Egypt for the past couple of weeks and I've tried to enjoy myself here but its very very tough at times,....the harassment is real and just so constant. I've travelled to countries far poorer than Egypt and yeah, people haggle for tourist dollars,....but not like here. Tips for others: *You will get sick of the words "TAXI" "TIPS" "WHERE ARE YOU FROM". *Say NO to everyone and anyone who approaches or talks to you in the street and keep walking, they are all scumbags. The good Egyptians will never harass people in the street. *Inside tourist attractions the constant harassment for tips/camel rides/souvenirs is insanely aggressive, beware. *Never let anyone know you have foreign currency, just stick to a fair tip in Egyptian currency. *Disgraceful security guards will happily let tourists walk all over ancient ruins for "tips", don't fall for it and don't wreck the ruins. *Even some hostel/hotel owners will try and scam you into personal tours claiming to show you "the real Egypt" then proceed to rip you off at every turn or walk you into a souvenir shop. *Negotiate a price for everything before you even think of doing it. (food, taxis, tours, everything!) * Use Uber instead of the constant battle with taxis. *Always ask for a menu even if its Arabic and learn some Arabic numbers because you will always always always be overcharged. *Always check the change you have been given. *Never hand over an entrance ticket or a train/bus ticket, ALWAYS wait for them to inspect and hand it back. I guess the only positive is that I haven't seen or heard about any violent crime or muggings,....Egypt is just scam central.

Sad that a lot of people are giving this a thumbs down.... some people just want to pretend that everything is perfect and not get real for a moment. But it's important to talk about this stuff. The country where I experienced the most scammers was in Morocco. But with that being said, there were a lot of extremely friendly people there who would want to guide me around or show me things, and they didn't expect any cash in return. Sadly though the scammers make it difficult to determine who is a friend and who just wants your money.

Had to laugh, perfect timing.. Landed in Cairo this morning. Even though I was aware about all that stuff that goes on, Somehow I found my self getting chatted up around Tahrir and ending up drinking tea at his shop. They're so smart. I told him I was just getting breakfast, and then he showed me to a falafel place and said I can eat it at his office (with items costing 300 usd) just because he wanted to give me a business card. ( I knew I landed in his trap) Tried selling me Tours, then paintings. I respectfully declined telling him I'd call if I decide to do one. He then became rude and accusatory saying I'm untrustworthy etc.. and demanded his business card back and kicked me out. I can't believed it happened to me after knowing about it, but also how rude he was. That's not happening again! Only la shukran from now on. The rest of the day was amazing walking around. Sensory overload.

I'm from NYC, thought I was scavy and street smart being from there. Also I've traveled to many countries over the last 15 years. Yet I was scammed in Cairo. Never thought it would happen to me. Met a man who said he worked at the museum, one thing lead to another. Next thing I knew I was in a shady shop in a room with fake oils that I bought for 200 US dollars. It all happened so fast. This happened in 2013 and I'm still trying to figure out what the hell happened, considering I'm a huge minimalist. lol

The only way you will survive in this country is to trust no one. Work out your entire trip... Tickets can be bought at the tourist attractions. Yet people will literally jump in front of cars and tell you "you must buy ticket from me, no tickets up there, they ran out, they close now but with my ticket no close.... Only 150 more..... Trust no one. Always careem and Uber, especially in Cairo.... I can't stress it enough.

As always what you are saying is 100% truthful and I hope no Egyptians take great offense to what your saying. Reality is reality and unfortunately for Egypt they have become very reliant over the years on tourist dollars and honestly I can't even imagine how it is right now. I visited Egypt (and loved it by the way) prior to the revolution, I went with a guided tour group which at times insulated us from scams but I never experienced the level of hustling that I came across going to various sites throughout Egypt so I can only imagine how it is now that millions are not flocking to the country. Like you I don't blame the Egyptian people for this and I totally understand the situation many find themselves in but yeah tourists need to have thick skin when traveling through Egypt because if you look like a tourist (which I don't) your going to be constantly harassed and it will be difficult to determine who is actually just being friendly and who is trying to scam you/get you to buy something you more than likely don't want.

As someone who travelled to Egypt Pre-revolution and post-revolution, multiple times, YOU ARE SPOT ON when you say its the revolution/political problems post-mubarak that created the HUGE INCREASE in scams........ I remember pre-revolution everything was soooo cheap, it was so calm, we were not scammed or bothered by street hustlers much. Years later I travel post-revolution, EVERYTHING has changed, the apartment building I used to stay in on the nile like quadrupled in rent and was fully booked for some reason. The price of taxis and food and EVERYTHING went up, and corruption and scamming were through the roof, I noticed the taxi drivers and many people I dealt with tried scamming and overcharging cuz they knew I wasnt a local (Even though I speak arabic and come off as a jordanian). But things changed sooo much post-revolution, but I noticed the increase in scamming was part of it. its crazy

When I was in Egypt I got scammed. They were so friendly and chatty and said they didn't want to sell you anything. But just make some tea. I didn't want to offend so I accepted. They tried to sell things at an extremely expensive rate when you sat down. I tried the whole bartering down but they got aggressive with me. In different parts of Egypt was the same. The sad thing is then I put up a wall and dont buy anything. I've sat with genuine vendors who are honest and try to sell and tell me of their struggles since the revolution. My heart melts for them. After knowing her for 5 months we blindly trusted her and she took $50000 to arrange the papers for 6 of us and then she told us we are leaving in one week we have to sell out belongings so we gave it to her to sell . Next morning she texted us “ thank you for the reward “ and she vanished . It’s sad but that’s reality in every disrupted, chaotic and economically fallen country .

Ohhh Nick, we've been to Egypt several times since 1999 and the last visit was this year. I can tell you with ALL certainty that the scamming was MUCH worse before the revolution than after it. People have come ahead in Egypt and there is a thriving middle class now, people are nowhere near as pushy etc as they were before.

Egyptian here! born and raised What he's saying is completely true. We, Egyptians ourselves, are on the lookout for scammers in our daily interactions. Not only in shops or tourist attractions, but also in every aspect of life, literally. It's SAD. For tourists, the best way to avoid scams - or at least minimize the damage - is to communicate with locals online before coming here. Egyptians in general are very welcoming and would be happy and excited to help a tourist. And when you come here, many would be willing to show you around or have a conversation with you on their days off. Couchsurfing.com is a good platform to find locals and interact with them. Good luck people. Don't come here!

Scammers really are a huge problem in Egypt! I'm ready to tip more than the average Egyptian would and haggle down prices for objects to an amount that is still more than an Egyptian would manage. When I go to Egypt it's for a vacation, I have a budget that is much higher than the budget the average Egyptian has to live during this period of time and I'm happy to spend and encourage honest people. But so many go beyond this honest way of making a living from tourism. And as a visitor I feel I always need to have my guard WAY up and can't be as open and friendly because who knows if I'm just being set up to be scammed...

I spend 2 months every year in Egypt as it’s such an amazing country..My best advice is to learn to read the price tags and when approached on the street state you actually live in Egypt so not looking to buy anything..I just say I live in zamalek as thst area is well known for expats to live..Don’t be afraid though to meet the locals egyptian people are such friendly and funny people you will ever meet.

Well said. I had the same scam in Fiji. I'm usually very cautious of any locals that approach me, but I'd heard about how friendly the locals were, so I was trying to be open minded. Ended up getting a cava welcome ceremony, which was really cool. But it was in a gift shop....so I knew I wasn't walking out of there empty handed. They tried HARD to get me to buy a "hand-carved" (definitely not) statue for $300. I only ended up spending $15. They made it so it would have been rude to stop talking to the guy, extremely awkward to not purchase anything, and then a guy basically blocked the exit while I was looking around the shop. Definitely soured my mood for the rest of the trip.

To comment about your video, I agree with everything you said. And thank you for visiting our great country. It's sad we lost a lot of tourism. I hope people like you can inspire more people to visit. And with the scams, yea of you are not from egypt, they will try to take as much money as they can. It happened to me.

Nothing to do with 2011, it was like this years before. I have been twice and been through the trips to the friend's shops and the trips to banana plantations by boat where they negotiate the return price once you're there or on the way back in the boat. "No, no don't you worry we'll sort the price out later".

I went to Egypt by myself last February. But I was already prepared for myself on how to watch out for the scammers. Thankfully I had help that watched over me. Only one scammer at the Egyptian Museum when he didn't give me back my change and denied it when confronted about it. But other than that, my friends did the negotiations for me when I wanted a souvenir. But it was a wonderful place and I will go back one day again. 😊

300$ for taking taxi over Cairo why? they didn't hear of uber or careem i think uber is international company and everyone knows and there is no chance for scamming when u ride uber
@mariemmagdy9679
@mariemmagdy9679 6 жыл бұрын
Lamiaa morgan them hearing about uber or careem is not the point, is it? The point is that the truth that alot of Regular Taxi drivers (which supposedly work and should follow the laws) are scamming people and they are doing that and the Egyptian government isn't doing anything about these people. In fact, from what i heard, uber and careem will not be working in Egypt anymore. Only because the country allow for such atrocities to be done against citizens and tourists.

Actually they are still working and am not talking about the whole video am talking about this point cause the only reason will make pay 300$ for a driver that if he is taking me to the moon we pay 300$ to fly for a country to another by plan how logic is it to pay for taxi driver it was obvious he was scamming on them and im suggesting uber an cream to solve this issue .

Lamiaa morgan i get what you are saying and obviously the person know if they are getting scammed but when yoi are in a situation like this, you only get told about the price after the trip and tbh, personally, i wouldn't feel safe getting into an argument about money with some drivers in Egypt. Especially as a woman. And for uber, maybe it is still working but i guess maybe it won't in the future. It was a recent court order about suspension for it. Don't know when it will take effect www.reuters.com/article/us-egypt-uber/egypt-court-orders-suspension-of-uber-careem-services-in-victory-for-taxis-sources-idUSKBN1GW1O2
