Rhoda and Leroy... "GIMME BACK MY SHOES!" This scene cracks me up every time I see it. Poor Leroy doesn't know who he's messin' with.

The actress that played Claude Dagle's mom had me crying like a baby. Rhoda's mom had me feeling tortured at the idea of being in her position. Leroy had me laughing at times but I could tell he was definitely a creepazoid. This is one of the best movies to ever hit the screen. Period

it is so DARK esp for the 1950's, some parts are way over acted though, meaning not really natural feeling to it, but this was the first of it's type, so that can be forgiven, abysmal ending though, this movie for those in the know, is it about generational psychopaths and really weird was her adopted father in this movie, did he adopt her for the reason to have a killer blood line? so much mystery as to why he adopted her. brilliant film of course from the dark minds at warner, this film was prob watched by few people back then. Ms Fern was amazing too!

I loved these two in the movie. Their interactions were so interesting, since it was refreshing to see someone who didn’t blindly suck up to Rhoda and actually challenged her talking points. Of course Leroy was messing with her and in his mind, he was only getting her riled up (that’s what highlights Rhoda’s immaturity and lets the viewer know that she is still a child after all, since she was easily caught up in Leroy’s lies when he got too close to the truth, which gave herself away even more). It was sad to see him go, but it’s what these scenes between them built up towards. No modern movie can truly emulate this type of dynamic like it did here. The remake of this movie only served to make the babysitter character (a stand in for Leroy) a bully, since she was so unlikeable. Leroy was mean-spirited as well, but it never felt as though he had any true power over Rhoda, since he still only was the caretaker instead of the babysitter, and his awful way of teasing still never felt like bullying as much as it did banter between two horrible people.
@murph88372 жыл бұрын
Yeah,you are absolutely right. I think another reason this type of dynamic wouldn't work is that people wouldn't buy Rhoda as an innocent little girl so easily. There was still this quaint idealism about the innocence of children that doesn't exist today. People are not that surprised anymore by the notion of child murderers. Had the same incident that happened at Rhodas school occurred today people would likely suspect a classmate was to blame. We are so jaded that nothing really shocks us so a person like Rhoda wouldn't get away with it so easily.

Agree with all the comments wildly lauding this scene, and the performances in this movie in general. One little subtlety that I thought was so nicely done is that Rhoda is definitely and obviously a malignant little cuss, but she's also still 8 years old, so not sophisticated enough to question why at first LeRoy said he came into her room and took the shoes, and only when she said she burned them did he tell the fiction of having heard them come down the incinerator. She simply believed him. Yes, she's a little demon, but like all children, the lines between make-believe and reality are easily blurred.
@murph88372 жыл бұрын
I One little thing that got me was how she was confidently dismissive of his earlier accusations but she was easily tricked with his final taunting. I would have thought that a child so easily fooled by him taking the shoes would have her guard up on him even alluding to her killing the boy. He was unwittingly correct that her motive was to get the medal. He was also unwittingly correct that she bludgeoned him with something to get the medal. Even though he was wrong about the murder weapon used he had the motive and method correct. If she was intelligent enough to see through that then why not his admitting to have possession of the shoes. I would have thought him teasing her with his supposed knowledge of killing the boy would be too much for her to let him live.

When I saw this as a boy , I didn't know what the story was about. I was just astounded that a kid could be mean to a grown up. It was beyond the understanding of a six year old boy . We were never treated bad, got a lot of love, but kept in line by our mommas and daddys. I probably saw this on TV around 1960 . Adults might as well have been all-powerful gods they way kids saw them then.
