The actor, Henry Jones, was always at the top of his game, but he was never clever. He was written as a very low IQ guy - described in the play as an imbecile - which is a word that used to be used in psychology for someone whose IQ was in the 60s. His only edge on Rhoda comes purely by accident.

Leroy is a simpleton who functions at a level somewhere beneath Rhoda's mental age. By teasing her and play-acting at being a detective, he accidentally stumbles upon the truth. He's not a sly or cagey person by any stretch of the word. When he finds out the truth, he is as frightened as any little child would be because he is himself a child. Monica Breedlove even alludes to this when she dismissively describes Leroy as a spiteful and neurotic child who has somehow managed to raise a family.

You DO see that is a little boy don't you?That is, therefore, not a little girl in a dress"... it is more of a "Kilt"... This is a movie about the "War in Heaven" Rev.12 [7] And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

I'm not just saying this because I am a librarian--the movie is good but the book is SO much better, especially the "friendship" between Rhoda and LeRoy. She was the master and he the humble student of crime. She encouraged him to "go for it" not knowing the real crime he wants to commit is raping her mother. Of course he dies before he can. The scene when he figures how she did is incredible. The way the author describes the switch in her demeanor is worthy of The Godfather..."it's business, nothing personal" might as well have been said.

Nancy Kelly did a fantastic job playing the mother of her demon child..And Eileen Heckart played the mother of the little boy, her son that Rhoda killed for his medal he won at school..You could almost feel the pain those two mother were going through..Great acting on their part! And of course Patty McCormack playing Rhoda the bad seed demon young girl...She was great playing that part, she made you hate her and scared of her all at the sametime, that's great acting!...And Evelyn Varden the neighbor who saw nothing wrong with young Rhoda, prised her like she was an Angel above..I wanted to smack her at times, she was being fooled by a demon young girl! The original 1956 "Bad Seed" movie gets 5 ***** in my book and always will!

I remember character actor Henry Jones from an episode of the "Lost In Space" TV series titled, " Curse of Cousin Smith". He played Dr. Smith's cousin Jeremiah Smith where both are trying to kill each other.in order to cl;aim an inheritance. Beautiful blue eyed blonde Patty McCormick was perfect for the role of Rhoda, in the previous play version then later in this movie version. Who would think such an innocent, sweet beautiful little girl like Rhoda was secretly a serial killer. But Leroy got her figured out and foolishly taunted her with his theories. Leroy was smart, but lacked common sense in how to react to one such as Rhoda. He fatally paid for that mistake. Patty McCormack then starred in the movie (in color) "Kathy O'" which with her pretty blonde hair and pig tails and superb acting was perfect for the role of a pampered young actress that secretly yearned for a loving family life. She also did well in an episode of One Step beyond as a farm girl temporarily given the gift from God to read minds, also in "Dan Marshall's Brat", a commercial for shoes, and some other things back in the late 1950's. Actress Patty Duke (born Anna Marie Duke) who starred in The Patty Duke Show and in the movie "Billie", mentioned that she took the moniker of "Patty" after her movie idol Patty McCormack, who became friends later in life.

A delightful scene and very well acted; it was humorous despite its ominous undertones. Patty McCormack's enunciation in the scene is excellent. Every syllable and consonant is clipped making her performance as Rhoda Penmark very believable. Rhoda comes off as more sympathetic in the scene to me because even though she is a murderer we still hate to see Leroy taunting her. That is the conflict in the story i.e. our feelings of sympathy for Rhoda versus our knowledge of her crimes. It was a conflict that was well set up by the filmmaker.
@murph88372 жыл бұрын

My mother claimed when she this movie in 1956 that Leroy ran out of the cellar on fire after they got the door open. I've seen this movie on TV and VHS, yet I never saw that part. I told mom she was probably confusing it with another movie after all these years.

Yes, I've seen that part too. I think later they edited it out.

i'll never see this masterpiece the same way...its based on a real life murder..well..inspired.. the true one was even MORE horrific... just like the title, the girl had bad wiring... she only served 5 years, and even got married and had a child...infuriating..she was 14! she knew what she was doing..

I wonder if Buck Flowers' role in the remake of Village of the Damned is based on this scene. The alien Children in John Carpenter's film dispatch him as well.
