Why does Discovery always have to overcomplicate things unnecessarily? The Badlands on Voyager/DS9 looked appropriate; it looked like a place that while dangerous, could be navigated while at the same time, you know it wouldn't be easy. On Discovery, it looks like a convoluted spider's web. The way they do things on Discovery, it's almost like how comic artists were in the 90s, overcomplicating characters with massive shoulder-pads and pouches because they have to be EXTREME!!!
@shadowedmultiverse13 күн бұрын
They always add a ton of unnecessary detail any time they show something from one of the older series; for example the Andorian makeup was perfected on Enterprise, while STD adds even more forehead ridges and even slug-like eyestalks on the sides of their faces.

[Disclaimer: Not defending Discovery, just posing a "What-if...?"] I have long wondered if the DS9 era Badlands were somehow related to the Pah Wraiths, considering their whole fire motif. The show never ventured an explanation for the giant stationary plasma storm, its strangely orderly structure, nor the fact that its proximity to Bajor never presented any kind of danger to the system. The Wormhole was created by the Prophets. What if the Badlands were created by the Pah Wraiths? I could see it loosing order over the centuries once the Pah Wraiths were permanently locked in the Fire Caves.

Wholeheartedly agree, 90s Trek SFX we're the best. The best way I can describe Discovery's SFX are that they're all for show and have no substance behind them (like the show itself, coincidentally). CGI may be spectacular, but for Disco and Picard the ships look rubbish. I've seen a few videos of a guy who's made his own motion control rig for models and is using a commercially available AMT Enterprise E model, and it looks almost as good as ILM's effects for First Contact for a lot of shots. For the ships, the SFX team should go back to miniatures, even if they're not full size models like the 90s and they're scaled down, I believe it would look better.

@@vrenak Why not? As with the Briar Patch there could be gas pockets of greater density with charged plasma-jets erupting like geysers, getting absorbed into another pocket, recharged by whatever makes the plasma storm stormy and then erupt again. These can happen into all directions, which makes it extremely unpredictable and dangerous to traverse if you want to get to the eye of the storm in the center. Now you have to use extra energy to drag separate physical objects along with the main mass, and always keep it aligned perfectly. What a waste of energy. And what happens when the ship loses energy? Do the nacelles go floating off into space? Can the Discovery no longer go to warp? And if the nacelles can "beam" energy back and forth, why did they need to take them with the ship into the Discount Badlands? Couldn't they have just left them safely behind? The VOY/DS9 versions are sooo much better because you can tell that it goes on forever, and also those tornados are massive compared to the ships. There's also a sense of mystery to it because you can't help but wonder how it formed a "ceiling" and "floor" with a vacuum between them and what causes the tornados. There's nothing else like the badlands in Star Trek or Sci-Fi in general because everything about it is contrary to how space should work. The STD version looks like every other "unstable nebula" effect Star Trek has done. You can barely see a couple hundred meters in front of the ship, so you don't get a sense of scale for how huge it is. Although space-lightning is just as unlikely to occur as space-tornados IRL, nutrek has featured space-lightning so many times that there's nothing special about seeing it yet again. The badlands are massive so in terms of canon this isn't necessarily a contradiction since it could just be a different location within the badlands; eg maybe they're actually inside those two massive flat clouds that form the "ceiling" and "floor". But it is a disappointment even if it's not a contradiction. What was even the point of bringing up the badlands if it's not going to bear any resemblance to its past incarnations?

( don’t get me wrong… It’s just a happy accident if anything. “a broken clock is right twice a day” after all. I still think the show makes incredibly stupid decisions and makes things overly dramatic for no reason. Just that scene alone where we always see is the guys mouth is childish and first-year-film-student level “art”. Ugh.

Am I the only one who finds the sound effects and music in Discovery constantly off-putting, especially in comparison to the old shows?

The thing about sound I get but remeber it is a show and showing dramatic effect for a mental vision is not absorbed. I don’t know how you don’t see that the effects from the 90s look like you would expect and a line with the same kind of things that you’re seeing in the 32nd century . Also 900 years is a long time for a change. They did say that people would hide in the Badlands and it’s possible that there are these pockets in there they can hide in and that’s what they meant. We just never saw them. Also technology could have been used to create the safe pocket of space for the archive; again unspoken but seems likely with it have stuff from endless species. I find it hard to believe that species would put their stuff there or want their stuff there if it wasn’t secure. Overall, this one seems weak to me

My explanation for this is that the plasma storm of the Badlands has changed/evolved in 800 years so now it looks and acts differently. Hundreds of years of swirling has created additional electrical bursts which themselves altered the way the plasma churns.

Pshhhh, obviously, the difference is explained by the 900 years that have elapsed. Why do you hate trans rights? ... ... sarcasm!

D.E.I hiring practices. You don't need to know anything about the previous shows, or lore, or even do anything that makes sense, or is Worth watching.

STD is complete trash . How the hell are they still making this tripe . It needs to be tossed into the bin of history and never remember again . Totally ruined the franchise!!!!!!!!!!!
