Oh wow. I had no idea how wonderful a podcast I was going to view. Well done. My 2 favourite subjects. Knitting and history of England. My family immigrated from England 3 generations ago. I adore the UK having visited family in Wales in 2010. I did not want to leave and go back to Alberta Canada

I so enjoyed the tour of the priory. It is mind boggling to me that so much of the architecture is still standing and in such beautiful condition. This series is so enjoyable and informative. Wish i could come and see these things in person. Thank you, Dan, for taking us along.

Hi from a wet and cold rainy autumn day here in South Australia. When I saw the jewel yarn, it looked like what I am knitting with ATM. Sierra yarn, has the same colouring with marling, 150gm balls, it's mostly acrylics, but with wool in it as well

Hi Dan and Kay. I was hoping you would go to Finchale since I grew up in Sacriston (nearby and a place that also had connections with the monastery at Durham, hence the name) and we used to go to Finchale for picnics when i was a child. It's such a beautiful setting right beside the river. No wonder Godric chose that spot. I very much enjoy all of your podcast content so thank you for that.

Love the rise and fall of the monasteries so much. I wish I could see what it looked like back then. Wonderful history lesson!! Back to knitting I always get a ladder on 1x1 twisted rib using magic loop EVEN tightening up that second stitch while knitting the cuff. Help!!

This was wonderful for a Friday morning pick me up while knitting a sweater. I totally agree with varying project size to kick start myself. Two years ago I started a mosaic crochet bedspread and it took over a year to complete. I used smaller projects - knitted socks, crocheted items etc - as palate cleansers to get me through. The sweater I'm now on took me 3 months to start after I swatched and practiced 2 new stitch patterns I needed to learn. Couldn't for the life of me figure out the 2 new stitch patterns so I set the project aside. Picked it up again finally and got the stitches correct first time. Now I can't put the sweater down. It's a beautiful Manos del Uruguay yarn and pattern for a short sleeve sweater(aka jumper) with cabling over the shoulders, around the arm holes and meeting up down the side. Only unfortunate side effect of my delayed start it that I won't be able to wear it til the fall. Currently, 30C here on the Canadian Prairies. Many thanks.

The new sock design looks fabulous! I'm excited for when you release it. I knitted the rumble socks, (first time pattern purchase from you) and really liked how lovely and clear it was written. I'm also thrilled that you are including a butterfly heel as it is my favorite!

Lovely video, as usual. I knitted a Guernsey for my Husband, I used 5ply Guernsey wool on size 12 and 10 needles (so long ago still using imperial sized needles) would be 2.75 and 3.25 nowadays. It was so warm he had to take it off when playing golf on frosty winters day.

Dan, when I am knitting a 2 round repeat I use two different colored bulb markers and attach one to the other. I use this as the beginning or round marker. I assign each round a color. When I begin round 1 use one color and when I begin the round 2 use the other color.

Dan, I just love and look forward to the next episode of your series. Maybe this is a stupid question, but I’ll ask it anyways…. At these sites, I always wonder how much has been restored (rebuilt) vs what is original - are you able to comment on that during your episodes?
@BakeryBears Жыл бұрын
Hi Carolyn, the majority of what you see is original. Work does sometimes need to be done to make structures safe but it rarely involves adding anything to what you’re seeing. I’ll point that out in future episodes. Thanks so much for your comment and best wishes! Dan

That’s too bad about the fuschia top! I would just pick up 2 for every 3 or 3 for every 4 depending on the weight and knit the rib from there (but pick up all the sts on the back, where it lines up with the knitting). As long as the stitches are evenly distributed, it will be fine. The v-neck decreases are just in the front few sts.

Thank you for another lovely episode. I wonder if you could describe when you say " men and women of the monasteries" what role women played in the monastereies. I was surprised to hear that both sexes were in the monasteries.
@BakeryBears Жыл бұрын
I will absolutely be covering this on a later episode. Male monasteries were more prevalent, certainly in the north of England but there were many abbeys ruled over by an Abbess and many priorys ruled over by a Prioress. More on this to come later in the series though 👍🏻
