Beruel's Retort is actually quite awesome, because you only want to buy 1 stack of 5. Since throwing axes can be swapped to melee mode, it's an insanely cheap way to get a +1 weapon almost immediately, and 1d6+1 and 1d8 have the same average damage. Throwing axes also have a lower speed factor, which can reduce incoming damage early game quite a bit.

@@Toshiro_Mifune I recently watched some of his content, and while he knows his stuff, it is not particularly useful to someone who's not already very knowledgeable about the game. His guides are very much focused on the way he plays, "Insane difficulty, no reloads, extra mods".

But he says it perfectly, you can beat the game with every class and use any weapon class but so are just betterr than others. His guides are very helpful and people have made time stamps for everything

11:50 Throwing axes are one of very few ways for Cavaliers and other no-ranged-weapons classes to have a ranged attack. Helps that they reuse the axe proficiency.

The greatest weapon: arrows of biting - slows powerful melee enemies so you can kill them from a safe distance and any normal spellcaster hit by a single arrow is dead meat.

That throwing axe + 1 is actually incredible. It's dirt cheap and you can switch it to melee so you effectively have a good +1 weapon for almost no gold right from the start of the game.

If you are planning on porting your character to BG2 at some point, then flails is the way to go because Flail of the Ages from BG2 is beyond busted.

The Golden Axe is a +1 axe that has a 10% chance to dispel magic on hit. You can get it from the dwarf in Baldur’s Gate that asks you to get his dagger back from an ankheg, but only by killing him. The Chesley Crusher is one of the best weapons for Bards out there. You won’t want it on a warrior since it changes your APR to 1. I’m of the opinion that The Burning Earth is a better weapon than Varscona. The +3 against undead is pretty nice.

You don't have to kill the dwarf for the Golden Axe. You can charm him with a nymph cloak, and swap off the axe to his fists, and then pick pocket it.

The burning earth gets better because you can pass it on and find it in irenicus' dungeon if your character gets ported over to bg2

@@JohnSmith-qe6fb basically the game has a few lists of items to transfer, and if you have multiple items in the list the one with the highest priority gets transferred, like (just making this up btw probably not real just an example) if you had the burning earth, varscona and ashideena youd get burning earth. But if you only had varscona and ashideena then you'd get varscona.

Pretty sure only defender has the good alignment restriction, not icing death. Also, you dont include THAC0 modifiers, which often dont match the damage bonus. In BG, this is an important stat. Also, I cannot say for certain, as its been years since I played, but I dont think spiders bane does block haste, though the rings of free action definitely do.

If it says +2 in the name its +2 thaco but true. Thaco matters more especially at that stage of the game. When I first picked up bgee I was a scrub until I figured out math and then played elf archer, it was funny how the game felt insta solved when u get like 14 thaco at level 1. It was down to like 5 or under by level 7, something crazy. I dont like playing archers but in bg1 it's too strong to ignore.

Best weapons in BG1 are Drizzts scimitars Icing death and twinkle. Other than that, Long Swords are the best.

Spiderbane and the electricity Hammer were my favourite weapons in the game. ☺️ I can't recollect that it disables haste, did they add this in the EE?

spiders bane gives the Free Action effect, which negates haste and slow and any other movement restrictions. you CAN unequip the sword, haste the character, then equip the spider's bane afterwards if you want haste though.

U get it too late in bg1 for it to really matter. It's funny cuz weapon tiers are pretty much decided in this game by how soon you get it. Also axes vs flails is a matter of do you want korgan or anomen in bg2.

I love morning stars but the only game with s tier ones is icewind dale lmao. Honestly your point about flails being bad is kind of moot. You can easily get an early +1 and then get your +2 in chapter 4 and you're set. All the weapons in bg1 are more or less the same and at that stage since the weapons dont have bg2 level unique effects and str matters more than base damage, a dagger vs a sword vs a flail is really negligible unless your character has low strength and even if they do you have a long lvl 2 mage spell u can use on party for +3 from strength damage. The extra +1 from varscona or asheeda is cool but its really whatever, the extra thaco is where the money comes from. The dagger of venom is the only real standout since it does 15 extra damage when enemy fails the save. True power gaming is going flails mastery since he gets enough in bg1 and then gets flail of ages+easthaven very early in bg2. This coming from a non power gamer who doesnt like using flails on his mc and gives it to viconia lmao. Also you didnt mention the mighty oak club +2 from cloakwood, the shadow arch druid carries it. You might also mention heart of the golem +2 dagger since its good and early to get before your venom dagger is affordable.

A dagger is better against enemies that have no piercing protection, flail is better against enemies that have no crushing protection (most of them) and sword is better against enemies that have no slashing protection. Don't use swords against enemies in plate. Dont use clubs against enemies in splint mail etc... Damage only comes into play if you actually hit the target. Hobgoblins get destroyed by bows since their leather armor gives you +2 to attack roll using bows. Chainmail gives you +2 attack roll on blunt weapons. Flails and other blunt weapons are the best weapons in the game since not many armors protect against them or rather not many armors have modifiers to give penatlies to crushing.

@@greatdude7279 yea true enough on blunt damage being the most efficient. I meant in terms of their math on the character sheet the bonuses tend to matter more than the base damage. +strength +proficiency +bard +cleric buff +class buff +items etc. The rest of that is kind of moot imo. Like the -3 slashing on plate is pretty whatever if your characters are set up correctly. It's never going to make or break an encounter unless you're running like a 6 fighter party unoptimized and didnt get your 32k exp early. At that point the game is grueling no matter what. Piercing is definitely noticable in being the weakest damage type though. It sucks cuz I love daggers and short swords but you suck ass against undead. For weapon type vs armor ac to matter it would have to get damage reduction like undead if not a much higher ac bonus. I'm not really a fan tbh cuz every game that has a weapon damage type as part of the balance it's always blunts = best.

@@ethosterros9430 I mostly play solo and 2 point difference aka 10% chance is very noticeable especially early game to mid game when you don't have low thac0 or spell support unless you play fighter/mage but even then the spells you will use are mirror image, shield, armor and blur since stone skin comes later so they are defensive spells rather then buffing spells. Speed factor also plays a massive role while warhammers have bad dmg they are king of early to mid game because of their speed factor. Delivering dmg very fast stun locks enemies for a second distrupting their hits or spell casting. Even if lets say mace has 1/50 and warhammer has 1/50 the warhammer will produce more hits over the same course of time.

@@greatdude7279 if u are running solo then you can afford to quickly grind to level 5 or 6 even on a multi. If u need thaco a few heroism potions work too. I dont generally like multi fighter mage myself since fighter just siphons the mage xp after level 9. No 3rd pip thaco either sucks. Idk I like to run well rounded parties so the chant gives value, slow gives value, blind and bless. Sleep for those gibbering packs. I think speed factor is more of a rogue mechanic so they can hit and run. It sucks waiting til the end of the turn on a fighter but its whatever as long as u getting your 3 apr. If u facing a heavy armor mob u slow+blind= -8ac. Or even better u can web him and he cant avoid damage at all and u can bow him down. If u really want an easy time with thaco just make an elf archer 19 dex. His thaco drops at light speed hes gonna be at 0 when most classes are still at 10 or more. Fighter built right has plenty of thaco he gets a big thaco spike at level 3 and you can easily find +2 weapon and the gauntlets for another 3. Me personally never enjoyed pure classes other than sorcerer and archer, and shadowdancer but I like to dual that to mage since levels fall off in value hard after 13. In a fantasy game with magic theres just no reason to not play a magic class. We can be muggles irl. Otherwise a dwarf berserker is great, orc is too with that 19 str bonus think it was 3 thaco. Theres plenty of math even for pure classes but you need to be willing to take it. If you're solo then you need to bite the bullet and grind xp because a lvl 1 character is worthless. The game is balanced for party play, solo means 1/6 action economy in exchange for 6x xp so you're hard gimped if you're not over leveling content.

The better warhammers like Crom Faeyr, Runehammer, and Hammer of Thunderbolts do. Most do 1d4 as a base though.
