Balkans is not really geographical peninsula, it is a region. One that is on cross roads between different civilizations and powers, it is one of the oldest parts or Europe. It has extremely diverse topography and landscape that allows huge fragmentation and diversity. In short it has its own uniqueness, charm and identity that makes it quite special compared to rest of the continent. Greetings from one Bosnian

Formal Croatian & formal Serbian are both related to Shtokavian... which is actually of Bosnian origin. So, the similarities are obvious. Also even though the two languages have different ways of conjugating verbs, both are able to follow through the grammatical structure of sentences. Big problem comes in dialects. Some Northern & Southern Serbian accents are a little tricky. Also Croatian North Western (which is almost identical to Slovenian), and the Southern accent (which has a fair amount of Venet Italian nouns) have made it harder for the two languages to link up. Fortunately, formal Croatian has retained many similarities with Serbian, and regardless of the fact that Croatian youth have issues in reading the Cyrillic script (since Croatian is written in Latin), most Serbs do in fact understand & use the Latin script on a daily basis. Particular examples of this would be the Latin Script used almost exclusively in Montenegrin & Bosnian!

He did say something that sounded like "Serbo Croatian language" which was basically a slightly edited version of Serbian that they tried to force everyone to speak so, as a Croat, I choose to be offended at that. Also, saying Kosovo is something other than Serbian legitimizes people moving somewhere en masse, having lots of kids and declaring the territory theirs through democracy. That might be offensive to anyone in W Europe who doesn't like Sharia law.

After 1991 the SSR of Moldova became the Republic of Moldova and a lot of controversies is around the region West to the Prut which is still under Wallach (Bucharest) control and the majority of the population is induced with stupid nationalistic false identity about a distant Celtic civilization who died out in the times of the Romans, maintaining so a dispute between Chișinău and Bucharest only for political and economic reasons. Imagine, you get up, call a friend, go downtown in a small city, you know everyone who lives there. Even if you are under 18 you go to the nearest store to get something to drink or you just get some homemade rakija. On the way you meet very friendly people and you initiate conversation, you get drunk with those random people and suddenly its 5 a.m. Its getting bright. Everyone dying for food you decide to go to the nearest bakery and get something good to eat for only 30 cents. Everyone happy you decide to go home. You remember that you have only 10 minute walk even if you live on the other side of the city. Without the fear of being shot or stabbed you go home and lie down on your pillow. This is how Balkan feels. You can go on and on making jokes about the Balkan but its the people that matter, I've been to many places, met a lot of people, but only in the Balkan you can find this much welcoming and friendly people . I'm Greek & I see Macedonia as both a Greek state & a Slavic country above it. I recognize the country that is straight up north as Macedonia, instead of the ridiculously long name.

@@mypanexogamouslineage965 Macedonia? Real Macedonians like Alexander, Phillip etc were Greek. Their names are Greek. Fyrom is a Slavic country, Slavs came here at 500 AC. They have literally nothing to do with the ancient Greek civilization from 300 BC which is Macedonia. Fyrom is a fake, stealing history from others country.

@@jelenapopovic645 It sounds like a southern Serbian dialect yet you can't speak it? The northern Macedonian dialects do sound a lot like the southern Serbian ones, but as you go south the differences pile up. Because we were part of Yugoslavia for so long, many people here use Serbian words that were left from that period, which have no connection to our standard Macedonian language, and that can give you the illusion that our language sounds a lot like a southern Serbian dialect.
