On the other hand ''free'' Villeins (Medieval era european peasants) who were vast majority of European population couldn't buy property, couldn't retire and couldn't even leave their lords' farm without their permission and the most importantly european rulers kept forcefully recruiting them for centuries!! @Jotaro97 Yeah, but you are wrong. Bulgaria lost to the Byzantine empire but a century after regained its independence and created a 2nd Bulgarian Empire. So, it is a continuation of the 1st Bulgarian state. The only real gap is the Ottoman Empire, but the Bulgarian identity never ceased to exist. However, the borders are not the same as before the Ottomans. It is like saying that Poland was created in 1918 and forgetting the ancient state of Mieszko I (966AD).

They have lived with the greeks for many centuries, almost a millenium. And since they fought as greeks in the greek independence then they are greeks end of story. Also you should be aware of the hatred between arvanites and turk-albanians in 1821. They have nothing in common besides the language and that’s also gone now so now you have completely nothing in common. The arvanites themselves have greek religion and obsiously consider themselves greeks. You don’t want to call them albanians. You might get your ass kicked. And also for you information, you uninformed brainwashed moron, the revolution started in Morea (peloponese) by Mavromihalis and the maniots. Yes you are absolutely correct, just to do that you need to change Slavs entirely. If Slavs were not so distracted fighting each other, the Mongols would've had hard time invading eastern europe or the Turks invading the Balkans. But because they were not united against the common enemy, the Turks ruled over the Balkans for some 500 years with little or no difficulties. Few insurrections (mainly by one group of people) which of course didn't succeed really, only worked with the help of the great powers and when the ottoman empire went into decline. Today the Balkans would've been much more developed and economically successful, if we made a stand against the Turks, not spending 500 years getting exploited in every way. Sadly we didn't and now we are back to what we were doing before the Turks came, hating each other and projecting each others' nationalistic fantasies instead of collaborating with each other. Left economically depended on bigger powers, making our people leave to work abroad or stay and be lied to by corrupt politicians.

That's true af. The Balkans and mainly the Byzantine Empire were the most advanced area in Europe before the Turks set foot and brought illiteracy , Islam and absolutely nothing of value with them. But the Balkans were also the worst thing to happen in the Ottoman Empire. They lost a lot of money and millions of soldiers fighting mainly the Greeks , the Bulgarians and the Serbs. Money and soldiers they could use to defend their territories in the Middle East and Africa. They tried so hard to keep the Christian lands in their Empire that they forgot to defend the Muslim lands. Imagine if these Turk dumbasses had Saudi Arabia and the other oil rich countries of the Middle East today. They would have been richer than the U.S.A. Instead of trying to transform the Arabs into Turks , they tried to interfere more with the Christians , who would rather stick the sun in their own assholes than call themselves " Turks ". 1821 and the Greek War of Independence is the beginning of their end. After that everything goes down like a tower made of paper. Within the next century this evil monstrosity , which brought pure misery to the Balkans stood no more.

We don't just put borders between us in religious or ethnic differences, sports are big reason too. 3. From time to time you will se some sports clubs supporters fighting between each other, that doesn't mean that they necessarily hate each other they just fight because they want to fight. Arrange rules, weapons and number of participants and of you go. 4. Typically when one of ex Yu countries plays against some other non ex Yu country everyone supports that ex Yu country. 5. Most of the people don't know why 1990's wars ever started even ones who participated in them. Because they didn't bring anything good to anyone. Fun fact: Most of the leaders on opposite sides during 1990's were in fact close friends in 1980's. One example is Alija Izetbegović was close friend to Radovan Karadžić.

This is so biased comment. Truth is that Balkan history is complicated, and nations living in Balkan are not some wild people. Many foreign influences are involved. Western powers are always looking to devide are nations and use it for their own purposes.

What you failed to mention here is that the Balkans have at their heart a Slavic origin, with the extremes having nothing to do with that identity such as Romania, Greece and Albania. So a united Balkans notion is ridiculous, maybe united Slavonic Balkans...but we saw how that turned out. As a Romanian, i found the video inconsistent as it did and did not include Romania in this discussion. Maybe document more before making these videos to understand the mentalities here.
@ecaterinavisan81784 жыл бұрын
I mean...Romania really didn't have that much to do with the Balkans to begin with. Even on the map it kinda showed Romania as "Balkanic but not really". 1.We are friends with Serbia and Bulgaria, and neutral with everyone else. 2. Soutern Romania does have a balkanic-ish like culture, the more north you go the more different it gets. 3. Until the WW we barely had any real interactions with anything South our borders. If it was not for fending against the turks we may had never had any issues with South at all. So you could say our geopolitics with Balkans were kinda of a "blank page". 4. As a latin country were could never relate to the whole "Slav brotherhood" idea. 5....I guess the fact we have a majority orthodox population kinda counts as common ties? But yeah that's it. We just had very little interaction with the Balkans, so I don't see why Romania should had been mentioned more in this video. Tho I agree since Romania, Greece and Albania don't fit the picture the notion of a United Balkan is pretty much impposibile. And honestly? Even Bulgaria may not fit the picture. They don't look thriled about any of their Balkanic neighbors. Probably because they are also the biggest of the soutern slavs, so they feel less inclided to any modern expansions.

@John Mason Slavs founded Kiev, but they were peaceful, that's why they called a Nordic king to teach the Eastern Slavs to fight, mixed with the Slavic natural strength, Slavs became fierce warriors, the Kievan 'Rus' (The Nordic king was called Rus, so they honored him by naming the state after him) later became Muscovy, then the Tsardom of Russia, then the Empire of Russia, then White Russia, then the USSR, then the Russian Federation we know today

As a proud Balkan i can say with a hand on my heart that the only reason for conflict in this region is geopolitical interests from abroad. The Balkans have been a multicultural region for thousands of years and we as people are used to this living style and have learned to overcome our differences, one way or the other. Conflicts are created by the ones that are hungry for power. War is the last thing that Balkans wish for. The Balkans know the cost of war and we will never let such a disaster happen again. Hopefuly someday we will create a true symbol of peace - a Balkan Union. A land united not by an ideology or religion, but by Faith - faith in the human heart, that can overcome every difference, and can not be bound by hatred.

Just a heads-up about the "Greater Romania Empire" thing: Romania actually had claims to many more lands, like western Banat and Western Crisana, tho those were actually to west instead of south, deeper into the Balkans. Romania is actually by far the most peaceful of the Balkans (tho let's be honest, that isn't saying much). Now that I think of it a series in with all of the territorial claims of every country would be cool.
