A fun fact. In WW1 Bulgaria allied with the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman empire - after that they all collapsed. In WW2 Bulgaria allied with Nazi Germany - after the war it collapsed. In the cold war Bulgaria allied with the USSR - later it also collapsed. Now Bulgaria has allied with NATO the consequences are yet to be revealed.

the more i study history the more i get whats the problem. its mostly religion. first when croatians fell under Frankish influence and became catholic and serbs were under Eastern roman influence and became orthodox. thats the first split and it only became worse from that point with turks bringing islam and deviding serbs into muslim serbs (bosniaks) and christian serbs. yeah i know that bosnia was a country before the turks but it was a serbian kingdom. its similar to the situation with austria and germany , same people, same lenguage but two countries because of history and religion, just like serbia and bosnia and herzegovina same people , same lenguage, same alphabet but two countries because of religion and history.

On the other hand ''free'' Villeins (Medieval era european peasants) who were vast majority of European population couldn't buy property, couldn't retire and couldn't even leave their lords' farm without their permission and the most importantly european rulers kept forcefully recruiting them for centuries!! Wakanda Foreva you are obviously referring to the arvanites but because you are a brainwashed idiot you call them albanians. Albania was not even a thing until the 20th century. Arvanites migrated to greece in the late middleages from modern albania. Of course arvanites and albanians have the same roots but one is albanian and the other is greek. They have lived with the greeks for many centuries, almost a millenium. And since they fought as greeks in the greek independence then they are greeks end of story. Also you should be aware of the hatred between arvanites and turk-albanians in 1821. They have nothing in common besides the language and that’s also gone now so now you have completely nothing in common. The arvanites themselves have greek religion and obsiously consider themselves greeks. You don’t want to call them albanians. You might get your ass kicked. And also for you information, you uninformed brainwashed moron, the revolution started in Morea (peloponese) by Mavromihalis and the maniots. I’ll give you a month time to google everything I just told you. I’ll give you some years extra time to finish elementary school. Then you can answer to me.

Yes you are absolutely correct, just to do that you need to change Slavs entirely. If Slavs were not so distracted fighting each other, the Mongols would've had hard time invading eastern europe or the Turks invading the Balkans. But because they were not united against the common enemy, the Turks ruled over the Balkans for some 500 years with little or no difficulties. Few insurrections (mainly by one group of people) which of course didn't succeed really, only worked with the help of the great powers and when the ottoman empire went into decline. Today the Balkans would've been much more developed and economically successful, if we made a stand against the Turks, not spending 500 years getting exploited in every way. Sadly we didn't and now we are back to what we were doing before the Turks came, hating each other and projecting each others' nationalistic fantasies instead of collaborating with each other. Left economically depended on bigger powers, making our people leave to work abroad or stay and be lied to by corrupt politicians.

That's true af. The Balkans and mainly the Byzantine Empire were the most advanced area in Europe before the Turks set foot and brought illiteracy , Islam and absolutely nothing of value with them. But the Balkans were also the worst thing to happen in the Ottoman Empire. They lost a lot of money and millions of soldiers fighting mainly the Greeks , the Bulgarians and the Serbs. Money and soldiers they could use to defend their territories in the Middle East and Africa. They tried so hard to keep the Christian lands in their Empire that they forgot to defend the Muslim lands. Imagine if these Turk dumbasses had Saudi Arabia and the other oil rich countries of the Middle East today. They would have been richer than the U.S.A. Instead of trying to transform the Arabs into Turks , they tried to interfere more with the Christians , who would rather stick the sun in their own assholes than call themselves " Turks ". 1821 and the Greek War of Independence is the beginning of their end. After that everything goes down like a tower made of paper. Within the next century this evil monstrosity , which brought pure misery to the Balkans stood no more.

I'm from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and yes it's extremely hard to understand us. I'll try to simplify it to you. Here we go: 1. When it comes to regular people no one is hating anyone. 2. We don't just put borders between us in religious or ethnic differences, sports are big reason too. 3. From time to time you will se some sports clubs supporters fighting between each other, that doesn't mean that they necessarily hate each other they just fight because they want to fight. Arrange rules, weapons and number of participants and of you go. 4. Typically when one of ex Yu countries plays against some other non ex Yu country everyone supports that ex Yu country. 5. Most of the people don't know why 1990's wars ever started even ones who participated in them. Because they didn't bring anything good to anyone. Fun fact: Most of the leaders on opposite sides during 1990's were in fact close friends in 1980's. One example is Alija Izetbegović was close friend to Radovan Karadžić.

2:23 Funny thing: There is no German version from that quote. Although Bismarck said something similar: "Der Balkan ist mir nicht die gesunden Knochen eines einzigen pommerschen Grenadiers wert." - "The Balkans are not worth the healthy bones of a single Pomeranian grenadier to me." So he knew, that the Balkans wasn't worth the waste of lives from German soldiers. Also, that quote is from 1878, not 1898, because that was the year he died. It could be possible, but he was ill after 1896. So it was probably made a quote after WW1 and simply said, that it was from him

What you failed to mention here is that the Balkans have at their heart a Slavic origin, with the extremes having nothing to do with that identity such as Romania, Greece and Albania. So a united Balkans notion is ridiculous, maybe united Slavonic Balkans...but we saw how that turned out. As a Romanian, i found the video inconsistent as it did and did not include Romania in this discussion. Maybe document more before making these videos to understand the mentalities here.

I mean...Romania really didn't have that much to do with the Balkans to begin with. Even on the map it kinda showed Romania as "Balkanic but not really". 1.We are friends with Serbia and Bulgaria, and neutral with everyone else. 2. Soutern Romania does have a balkanic-ish like culture, the more north you go the more different it gets. 3. Until the WW we barely had any real interactions with anything South our borders. If it was not for fending against the turks we may had never had any issues with South at all. So you could say our geopolitics with Balkans were kinda of a "blank page". 4. As a latin country were could never relate to the whole "Slav brotherhood" idea. 5....I guess the fact we have a majority orthodox population kinda counts as common ties? But yeah that's it. We just had very little interaction with the Balkans, so I don't see why Romania should had been mentioned more in this video. Tho I agree since Romania, Greece and Albania don't fit the picture the notion of a United Balkan is pretty much impposibile. And honestly? Even Bulgaria may not fit the picture. They don't look thriled about any of their Balkanic neighbors. Probably because they are also the biggest of the soutern slavs, so they feel less inclided to any modern expansions.

Ottoman rule over the Balkans was cruel and the local population suffered, which is why they were always fighting the Ottomans + they wanted freedom for their ppl and their kingdoms. And another thing, historically, yes this region was a war zone for so long because of its strategic position between the east and the west. Belgrade, for example, the capital city of Serbia is the city that has seen the most sieges in the history of the world. And it has been raised to the ground 40 times. But it’s still standing, which, I think, is a nice thing because it shows the resilience of its people. This city has seen so much, from the oppressive rule of the Ottomans, to the Austro-Hungarian oppression, and then the exodus of Serbian people trough Albania (they traveled to the island of Corfu in Greece and so many of them died), the Nazi oppression and most recently the bombing from Nato... So many people died, and not just soldiers, but thousands of civilians. And even after all that suffering, wars, occupations, bombings, Serbians still manage to be one of the friendliest and most hospitable people in the world. In conclusion, I wish others had less prejudices about Serbian people. Trough most of their history, they were trying to defend their selves from oppression from the outside and mad politicians from the inside who wanted war in the region. And ofc, as in any other country, you have groups of people with insane polices, but the majority of people in Serbia are normal, peaceful and ordinary citizens Edit: spelling

Belgrade was found by Celts in the 3rd century BC and was called Singidunum. It was later in the 700-900 when it started to become more slavic. Dont know which list or statistic you derived this, but i think it doesnt apply to the top 10 most besieged cities. When Serbians fled threw Albania they were killing Albanians to get something to eat, because it was winter and no food available. Furthermore did the Serbians kill thousands of people just a couple of years ago in the so called "anti-osmanisation". No wonder Albanians werent hospital to them and protected their food.

Not a part of the Balkans but certainly has a long common history with Serbia, Croatia and Romania. Btw, true Balkan countries are Bosnia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania and Greece. Other countries are only partially Balkan countries.

I Agree with that guy. If the ottomans AND THE GREAT POWERS didn't put their noses in our businesses the Balkans were gonna be a big happy family. But there wasn't gonna be Macedonia and Albania and a part of Thrace wasn't gonna be greek.

Did he really describe southslavs as illyrians.... This is why some people should be permitted from explaining history. p.s Roman province of illyricum and the illyrians were inhabitants in balkans but much before the slavs migrated and settled in balkans. By the time slavs arrived, illyria dissapared in thin air, the only illyrians who managed to survive the slavic migration are the Albanians alongside with the Hellen Greeks...these two both have unique languages whilst 350 milion slavs worldwide understand each other (for example a croatian can understand a Bulgarian and a Montenegrin can understand a Ukrainian)

I have to add that both Romania and Bulgaria got their independence in 1878 as well. Otherwise, great video, I always love your vids. Keep it up!
