If Justin Verlander says they are juicing the baseballs and Rob Manfred say they aren't then for sure they are. At least for this old geezer it's ruining the game for me. It's not just skewing the stats making it impossible to compare players between eras, it's fundamentally altering the game play. The following aspects of hitting are almost completely worthless since, statistically, taking a big uppercut for the homer is now always the most profitable strategy: bunting, hitting behind the runner, hitting to the opposite field, choking up just to make contact with 2 strikes. It also means defense is devalued as well.
@Sweet_Spot_Breaks5 жыл бұрын
The game constantly changes. Even if said balls were not juiced, how could you compare today's players to other generations where ballparks were 500 feet to center, or when the mound was taller, or when pitchers couldn't throw 90 mph. No era in baseball can be 100% compared to any other era because of the changes made to the game. The baseball itself has even seen many changes since the start of professional baseball

And it also ruins the need to steal bases. Before, stealing bases and getting into scoring position was super valuable. Now, when people are hitting so many long balls, stealing a base just isnt worth the risk of getting out. More than likely, someone will come up to bat and instead of hitting a single to score you from 2nd, they hit a homer or at least one deep enough to score you

I remember going to a baseball game and being absolutely mind blown if someone hit a home run - now it's almost a given. No offense to the guy he's a great player, but there's no way. Pete Rose is exactly right(except he left out how MLB ignored steroid usage, practically CONDONED steroid use as a power aid in addition to all the other things he mentioned in the "great home run conspiracy" as I've always called it, post '94 strike), but this should be obvious for all to see. It's a joke, & a shame because there's SO much more talent than ever before. The athleticism in MLB is off the charts, but it's being wasted because they're playing an artificial game. I occasionally go to games at Dodger Stadium, which has traditionally been considered a pitchers’ park. Up until 2 or 3 years ago, countless fly balls that looked like potential home runs off the bat would die just in front of the wall. In the last 2 or 3 years, however, I’ve noticed that fly balls that look like outs off the bat just keep traveling and traveling until they go over the fence. As a result of homers like these, Dodger Stadium is no longer a pitchers’ park. It’s clear that the ball has been altered in some way in recent years.

The amount of weak guys hitting homers is incredible too. Just check out Yelich, not calling him weak, but his power came outta nowhere. Throughout my life I haven't seen a skinny guy rake like Yelich ever. Also weak homers... That Todd Frazier homer in Yankee Stadium couple of years ago was absolutely ridiculous and im a Yankees fan

WesleyAPEX That’s a bit of a stretch to say the least. Andrus hit 20 in 2017, then hit 6 the next year, and is on pace for 14 this year. There are plenty of players throughout history who had brief power surges for one or more seasons, and that includes the pre-steroid era. Examples include Lou Boudreau in 1948, Robin Yount/Barry Larkin for a few scattered seasons, and Cy Williams during the 30s. Other players, like Rogers Hornsby, start trying to hit home runs, and turn out to be quite good at it.

It’s gone too far. Balls hit off the end of the bat and off the hands are going way out of ballparks. The ball has to be juiced and MLB is controlling it. They could probably control it by having the balls stored in a humid environment for 24 or so hours before the first pitch. It just diminishes the value of the homerun if they hit this many. Thirty used to be a lot but not anymore.

You don’t even need to show the balls going 500 feet to prove balls are juiced. A two seam fastball running away from a lefty and it goes over the center field fence or a fastball down and in on a lefty and goes over the left field fence because they were late is enough proof that the balls are juiced

Look at Puig's home run, he didn't even have two hands on the bat when it made contact AND he was waiting/watching to see where it was going to land, basically showing he didn't even think it was going out.

All they need to do is have a fan bring a baseball in that someone hit as a homerun, and cut the thing open and have it analyzed (and perhaps compare it to an older ball). I mean, with how many balls have been homered lately, it's not like home run balls are rare or anything. Or heck, you don't even have to cut it open, you could do like bounce tests and such.

Someone still has to hit the ball putting it in play. Juiced or not. Look at basketball, it's a 3 point game, anyone can shoot a 3 it seems. Should they move the line back? Alot of ballparks are small because they are built in citys that are already crowded
@chieftrey15 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’s one hundred percent the fact that the ball is juiced. The shift has taken away a lot of Texas Leaguers or bloop singles. Guys in the 70s-80s could get away with trying to go opposite field on 0-2 to get an easy single, but in 2019, there would be graphs everywhere and all managers would know to put everyone in the opposite field with two strikes, so boom, instead of an XBH, that guys popped up to the 3rd baseman (who’s likely playing behind second base). Now, don’t get me wrong, the ball is definitely different, but you gotta think about hitters’ approach to it, more like Rose said. Players aren’t afraid to strike out 2-3 times in a game if it means that they can double or homer. It seems ridiculous that it could work, but it does. And it’s really just a snowball effect. The more the power guys start to try and power swing with 2 strikes, then it’s gonna trickle down, and the speedy guys and contact hitters will emulate it. But the main reason for all the homers is the fact that we are now in the Statcast era. Guys have realized that the most important statistic is no longer the .300 batting average; it’s the .900 OPS. They no longer care that they struck out 162 times this past season, they care about launch angle (hitters swing at the bottom part of the ball nowadays) and exit velo. If you can hit it at the perfect angle 110mph off the bat, it WILL be a hit, no question whatsoever, cause there’s nobody to catch it but fans. One more thing, almost ALL pitchers can throw 90+ today. Bob Gibson, considered to be one of the hardest throwing pitchers ever, threw almost 98 mph usually. Now, hardly a single game today passes without a pitch that speed. High pitch speed+high launch angle=lots of backspin. Lots of backspin=lots of carry. Equals lots of dingers. Also we can’t forget the DH, that helps get one more bat in the lineup. It’s not the hitter’s fault or them being stupidity, they’re being told by their coaches to do this stuff. Because of the shift and faster pitchers, hitters realized (with a little help from the fact that they can access a database with all the baseball knowledge in existence) that they almost had to change the game.

Pete Rose made the point that the way MLB thought they can bring fans back into the ballpark was the long ball. Well the most home runs we’ve seen hit in a season is happening right now and attendance in the MLB is still struggling. I think it’s boring when each game is determined by HR’s hit. Manufacturing runs is so much more exciting with the occasional long ball.

I great example of this is Christian yelich...when he was playing for the Marlins, he he 18 home runs the year before his MVP season and the next season he has 36 in less games. He literally doubled his home run totals in 1 season and in less games. A player like Jorge Soler randomly became a top 10 home run hitter in the majors after rarely ever posting double digit home run seasons. It's hard to deny the fact that balls could be juiced...the only thing that could be a flaw in my argument is the crazy jump that Jose Bautista had. He went from his best home run season having only 16 home runs in 142 games, to hitting 54 homeruns a couple of years later...

Only problem I have with balls are juiced argument, is it fails to take in account about the change in launch angle amongst players, instead of hitting it square for best chance of contact which was taught since the beginning of the game.
