The dawn rose over the Earth each year,
And Russia was rising, forgetting about the past
It was pampering the boys with its love
And warmed them in its heart as it could
But suddenly the year 1941 burst into fire
Girding the boys with a soldier's belt..
The Motherland is looking at them and its eyes are severe:
"Where are you from? Who are you? What are you ready for?"
Courageous hands were raised in reply:
"We are ready for the battle! We are ready for the years of separation!
We are ready for the joy of the victorious lights,
For hunger, for the gravestones' cold,
We are ready for everything for the sake of future days!"
Nowadays, the youth are raising space rockets!
The Fatherland has given everything they could wish for.
But from alien ranges of the sleepless planet
Death threatens to destroy the whole earth completely again
The ashes of the atomic storms are made red-hot!..
What shall we do, boys, to keep Youth alive?!
History is calling and its eyes are severe:
"Where are you from? Who are you? What are you ready for?"
Strong hands are raised in reply:
"We are taking the whole big Earth under our personal care."

A truly great song, unfortunately little known. Both in the lyrics and in Leonid Kharitonov's performance one can feel at once the power and tragedy of historical episodes that determined the course of not only Russia, but also the entire Earth: the October Revolution, the Great Patriotic War, the Cold War. These epochs, hard and in many ways gloomy, gave birth to generations of strong people who built the Soviet country, defended it in the fight against Nazism and opened the way for Mankind to go into space (the presence of Gagarin in the video sequence is most symbolic of that). And the ending is so optimistic, with such hope for the future... In our time, it would not write such a thing, it is clear why. The song is both good and bad at the same time, because it is too strong a belief in people that each of them is ready for anything "for tomorrow. One would like to believe that "tomorrow" will indeed come. And in the meantime, History, eyes stern, continues to call us...

If only there was a new second verse about 1936-39. The story loses some of its theatrical splendor when you realize they skipped over some of the most horrid years of tumult in that country. The reasons are understandable ofc, but something the communists of the world should have learned long ago is that we need to confront our chaotic and violent history, not stifle an understanding of it, or pretend everything was fine.

I’m saying that the era-spanning epic tale of hardship and recovery is hurt by its lack of acknowledgement of one of the most horrible periods of struggle that the Soviet Union had ever seen. It’s obviously not that I don’t understand WHY there isn’t another verse, no country often says “we really fucked up” in the middle of a song like this. But I think my critique is valid! I love the song nonetheless, Kharitonov is a legend, and legends never die, just like communism.

This would have to be my favorite of Leonid's performances, it provokes emotions of a call for help, and a emotions of the boys almost having to be urged to fight. I love it, and I believe this song still has relevance to today's modern society even though the Soviet Union has since passed on.

Много раз пересматриваю видео и по нескольку раз подряд. Концовка с крупным планом- это и операторский шедевр и природная красота исполнителя в образе - не у каждого голос и лицо 100% соответствуют теме и больше становятся наигранными гримасами. It is one thing to believe in an ideology, another to believe in the nation. If I understand correctly, Leonid Mikhailovich loved Russia, what Russia was, and what Russia stood for more than what the party would say... he would want what's good for Russia more than what's good for the communist party. If not for the communist cause in 1917, Russia would have collapsed and being drowned into fascism and dissolution. The real patriots were the reds, and the whites, who openly talked about about saving Russia, and who thought themselves as "genuinely patriotic" were in reality ready to destroy it. So one has to be careful about what "genuine" means, because there is the danger of false meaning. I am not attacking Kharitonov at all, just wanted to point out that in the past, to be "genuinely patriotic to Russia" and "loyal to the communist cause" was mostly the same thing. Only internationalism made nationalism possible

This is a beautiful song, and you can actually feel tears when he mentions 1941 and seeing the faces of those who lived it in the audience. It is ironic to me as an American at 3:49 he is singing about the United States. I remember the Cold War well. It touches me how people on both sides wanted to save the planet.
