The fact that this is called the ballad of Jane doe when it's really a lament, and Noel's lament is actually a ballad, is super cool. The titles reflect what the songs *want* to be, not what they are. Jane doesn't have a ballad because she has no story. Noel doesn't have a lament, his is telling the story of Monique.

In a way, she can't have a lament because no one is mourning her. She has a ballad that is not really her ballad, her story. Her ballad belongs to every Jane/ Jon Doe. This is the story they all have, no sadness or anger, just a blank headstone for a faceless person.

As someone obsessed with Romamticism art, the phrase "time eats all his children in the end." It reminds me of the painting "Saturn devouring his son"(Saturno devorando a su hijo) by Francisco de Goya. I think I only relate them because in the painting Saturn, which is literally Chronos, god of time, in Roman culture, is precisely devouring the head of his son
@sweatpantsromance
@sweatpantsromance Жыл бұрын
to add onto this, the original myth that the title of the painting alludes to (which, as a side note, was not coined by the artist himself- he died before he got the privilege to name it) centers kronos eating his children, the first of the modern greek gods.
@billylenzsupremacy

I don't know about the Italians, but Kronos was the titan patron of agriculture, that's why he is also shown bearing a scythe. You must (as most foreigners bc of Turkish imperialism/west Europe supremacy at the time when the first excavations were made the foreign archeologists never bothered to ask locals and just made their own conclusions) The personification of time is Chronos (as all personifications; the name is is the relevant noun(like nyx=night, iris=rainbow and so on) , in this case Chronos= time) but yeah. Kronos had agriculture/farming idk the correct English word and chronos was time.

Right afterwards she also says: 'When silence falls, does anyone care?' which seems to reference the saying "when a tree falls in the woods, does it make a sound" (ie. if something is not experienced, does it actually matter?). You see it in her name too, and in the way she references John Doe at the end of the song. I really like how the songwriter twisted common modern-day sayings and concepts just enough to make them feel foreign and otherworldly. They've also focused on evoking imagery that matches Jane's character. It makes the song feel 'bigger' in its subject matter than it would if we heard the same in more familiar language, which is particularly needed for this character.

@@americaroleplayer yeah lol, I kinda had the same conversation with myself, so it probably is a reference to Kronos, but I also read that it could be a reference to her catchphrase, about how the lion eats his cubs, but to me that doesn't really make any sense as to why she said 'time' so I don't really believe that one lol

@@americaroleplayer It could be a reference to Kronos, but I'm not entirely sure, because technically Kronos didn't eat all his children, and also I don't think she would see it as a consolation if it was referencing Kronos as if all his children were eaten, they wouldn't have been freed. However, as Kronos had 6 children that were gods, and there were 6 students in the choir, it could make sense. If it were to be interpreted as Kronos, then it could also represent Jane as Zeus, the last one to arrive/be born and the one who wasn't eaten properly, (Zeus was swapped for a rock, and Jane was part doll and "escaped"). If this interpretation is to be believed (the Jane Zeus one) then it might be predicted that Jane frees the other 5 choir students at some point after the events of the musical, just as Zeus did. I can't believe I just typed that all up. Anyways, it might make sense it might not I don't really know.

“Time eats all his children in the end” alluding to Ancient Greek mythology where Kronos, king of the Titans, is cursed so that his children will one day overthrow him. His solution is to eat all of the newborn children he has with his wife Rhea. In the song Jane uses it to say that no one can escape death, Time takes us all in the end. But the missing part of the myth is that this is the story of the birth of Zeus; after all her other children were eaten, Rhea became fed up and swapped out newborn Zeus for a rock wrapped in swaddling clothes like a baby. She gives that rock to Kronos instead, and Zeus grows up to overthrow the Titans and his father. So Time doesn’t eat all his children in the end. This one line foreshadows the ending of the show, that the other students will die and pass on, but Jane will not be eaten. She gets a new life. Favorite line❤️

Does anyone else try and figure out exactly how Jane died? I mean it’s implied that she died last as she must’ve been seated in the back but how exactly did she lose her head? I would accept the gruesome idea of she must’ve landed on the tracks again unlike the others but the way she sings about her head kind of implies it’s still intact somewhere doesn’t it? So I don’t think her head was crushed I think she was fully decapitated but simply how would that occur from a derailed rollercoaster if the others were presumably killed by impact with the ground.

Warning: a few spoilers, for those who haven't seen the show and/or listened to the album. This one just makes me sad, man. This whole show does, really, but there are plenty of comedic and fun moments sprinkled throughout before you get to this part that make you laugh and forget you're watching a show about dead children. When you get to this song, all the comedy vanishes (for now, anyway), and the reality of the situation comes crashing in. She's dead. They're _all_ dead, and she's the worst off because she can't remember who she is/was. You can just feel her confusion and sorrow and, later on in the song, her rage (during the _"Why,_ Lord?" parts). It's this anguished demand for an explanation, one that you really want to answer but, at this point in the story, just can't. It's depressing and makes your heart go out to Jane, and I think _that's_ a testament to how well Emily Rohm did in this musical! :)

For me, the only parts that really break my heart are Ballad of Jane Doe, and Talia. Because, on the flipside of your explanation. Talia is about a man who loves someone so much, he'd do anything for her. And knowing he's dead, and he can never hear her again, never talk to her. That all he has in the afterlife is whatever's on his cell phone. And he can't make good on all of his promises. The two songs utterly wrecked me the first time.

Can someone with a higher functioning brain tell me if what I'm hearing at the end is Dies Irae, because if by the 0.001% chance it isn't, I'm going to cry. Please I'm literally hyperfixated on this musical and if it mixes with one of my auditory loves I'm going to overjoyed. Like genuinely I catch dies irae so easily, but it's not catching properly this time for some reason I'm referring to: "A mel-o-dy floats through the air when sil-ence falls does no one care? Jane Doe." It's used so often in media, and I love it. Some examples are the "siren" esc call from Frozen 2, a background noise in the pink shape guys song from Squid Game, and even a scene in Star Wars I think. Once you hear it, you genuinely can't unhear it. It makes absolute sense for this musical too, as dies irae is a song used as a symbol for death.
