Slight correction: with the Pokemon episode "The Legend of Dratini", it wasn't just one scene where Ash has a gun pulled on him. There's a running gag in the episode where the Safari Zone's warden keeps pulling a gun on the main characters and threatening them to behave.

There's another pulled episode of Arthur, the original version of "The Great MacGrady," the one where the lunch lady gets cancer. Not because of the subject matter, but the fact the episode had celebrity guest star Lance Armstrong. After his cheating scandal, the episode wasn't aired again until it was reanimated and rerecorded to feature an original character in his role. Also, that Buzz Lightyear episode being banned annoys me. It was clearly an anti-drug/anti-stereoids message episode, but the fact the drug allegory exists in the episode to begin with had them ban the episode. And it was a well done message episode, too. Not too preachy, willing to show the danger of the substance. Way to kill a well meaning message, guys.

We have the technology to do it quickly and easily now I'm sure, with all the video editing people do nowadays at home for free. I'd love to see that. At least the Dratini one can be edited out given all the stuff Yu-Gi-Oh got edited out of it. (Finger guns at Kaiba, really??) It boils my heart that these episodes were banned because of hypocrisy, mass hysteria, and false complaints; let alone unable to air again just to appease the most sensitive of people and fuel the egos of the corrupt. But, there are plenty of episodes you've missed, Hot Spells, The Great MacGrady, and so on. I see nothing wrong with the episodes that were apparently banned, when you get down on the research the ties to why they were banned would be less than minimal, or just pure nonsense to cash in on a banning trend that's questionable to begin with.

Something else about the Electric Soldier Porygon incident was that Porygon and its evolutions have been banned from appearing on the series ever again. Also, the I Love Lucy episode in question is available on the Season Six box set. I've never heard anything about it being banned here in America, but I suppose it's not entirely surprising, given the tensions of the Cold War. The summary--WARNING FOR SPOILERS--is basically that Ricky, now successful (with a few films under his belt, a successful European tour, and the ability to buy a half-ownership of the nightclub he's worked at as main entertainment and manager for years), goes home to visit his family in Cuba. Lucy is terrified; while she gets along with Ricky's adorable mother, she doesn't know the rest of her in-laws, and, despite being married to Ricky for several years, doesn't speak very much Spanish--and what she DOES speak is obscenely butchered. In particular, she needs to make a favorable impression on Uncle Alberto, the head of the family, who has always nagged Ricky over having married an American woman, instead of a Cuban. And, Lucy being Lucy, her well-meaning attempts to get in Uncle Alberto's good graces fall horribly flat. Ultimately, though, Uncle Alberto comes to love her almost as much as Ricky does. It's a very moving episode to watch, as Desi toward the end is getting very genuinely and deeply emotional; you can see how much he misses everything he knew in Cuba, and it carries over to Ricky Ricardo. The Arnaz family had been very wealthy and successful back in Cuba; Desi's mother was the heiress to the Bacardi Rum fortune (I think his kids still get a cut of the profits, as the company was miraculously NOT confiscated during Castro's takeover), and his father had at one time been mayor of his hometown. I'm willing to bet that, once Desi escaped to America, he was never able to go home, so the idea of his character being able to must have made it a hard episode to make. (The emotionality of the episode is beautifully eased, however, by a darling duet of 'Babalu' between Desi and Keith Thibodeaux--Little Ricky.)

My family would order pizza and watch X Files when it was on TV. We saw that Home episode the first time it aired. And then it disappeared. For awhile I didn't bring it up, tbh I started wondering if I'd made it up, given that it totally disappeared. Finally I asked my sister when we were older, "Do you remember that horrifying episode with the inbred people and at the end they pull their mom out from under the bed on a plinth on wheels and she had no arms or legs and it was implied they took her out to have sex with her or do I have the most demented mind ever and I made that up???" Her reaction told me I didn't make that up lol. She had the same issue and was afraid she'd made it up. We just saw it once as kids, and it was literally erased from reality, while the other X Files episodes would repeat. Like it never existed. We asked our parents why they didn't talk to us about it and only one of them remembered it and said they hoped we didn't understand the implications and didn't want to raise it and risk us understanding because it would be traumatic. Lmao you think??

Being 32, I can honestly say I remember a lot of these; especially the panty raid episode. When I was 13 and watching that episode with a friend, back when there were plenty of other taboo SpongeBob episodes, it wasn't that big of a deal, and I remember having it on the original DVD set as well. But I live in Alabama, and as a lesbian, I still can't get how my state yet again has to be the skidmark of America. 2019 was not long ago at all, yet they still had to make a big deal over nothing, and the sad thing is that the people who don't even really have basic TV are the demographic of who would even be watching that show. Also, more people than not are supportive of the LGBT community. I have been lucky enough to know that Alabama really does have great people.

The lawsuit about the song came in 2007 long after the initial episode banning fiasco. Family guy won the suit easily due to parody being protected speech. The ban wasn’t a result of angry viewers or copyright issues, Fox higher ups just decided it was too anti Semitic and decided not to air it during the shows initial run on the air but Adult Swim aired it around 2003 and plenty times since when it got syndication rights for the show.

I was hoping you would cover Star Trek. One of my favorite series EVER. One of the episodes banned in the UK... Patterns of Force... with the Nazi planet.. was banned in Germany and (at least at first) Israel as well. Israel got it before Germany did somehow. Reviewed my old textbook from Media Law on International Law. It got to Israel first because their laws are looser. You can use Nazi imagery in art- provided that the work itself isn't Pro-Nazi. Which Patterns of Force is most certainly not. Germany did not have laws like that until the late 90s. But Star Trek fandom is pretty big over there so almost the moment the law passed, fans demanded to see the episode in German. And hey, Paramount obliged.

It's very odd to me as a DW fan (I didn't know the BBC aired Star Trek, I understood that was Sky) the BBC banned Sci-fi. XD
@jessewilley5312 жыл бұрын
@@Roadent1241 @Roadent1241 There was an era where fully private broadcasters in the UK simply didn't exist. Star Trek made it over to the UK less than a year after the whole show ended over here. In fact, its success over in the UK led to three different projects. The BBC tried to license Paramount to get the right to do new episodes. (New ship, new crew if necessary) almost 20 years before TNG. When Paramount said 'No.' The BBC went ahead and created Blake's Seven. That show exists because the BBC couldn't do more Star Trek. Meanwhile, realizing syndication on Star Trek was huge and it was doing great in the international markets, NBC and Paramount got together with Filmation to do Star Trek: The Animated Series. The show was guaranteed to break even in the states and make a profit in Canada and the UK. Contrary to what a lot of Star Trek fans think, ratings aren't what killed the show in 1974. Ratings wise the show was doing pretty well. Nope, the it was cancelled for three reasons. The first being William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy demanded raises. Two, in the US, there were parents groups complaining about the amount of violence in kids shows. This caused a problem since about half the first season of Star Trek: The Animated Series were stories developed in case the live action series got a fourth season back in 1969... only chopped down to a 22 minute run time. The real nail in the coffin for the animated incarnation was that in late 1974, an up and coming director named Spielberg began work on a little movie called Close Encounters of the Third Kind and in 1975, his buddy George Lucas began production on Star Wars. Seeing Sci-Fi was big again, by early 1975, Gene Roddenberry thought the way forward Star Trek TV show- which sorta happened. It took three years to get Paramount onboard to do it. But the pilot was made. Sorta. Only it wasn't. Because Paramount had to pay an insane amount of money for the time, ($500,000 in 1978- closer to $2.5 million dollars today) to get Leonard Nimoy to come back so they opted to recoup their losses by turning it into a big budget theatrical movie.

I can easily see why some of these were banned, what with the hate and discrimination in them, plus certain inappropriate topics (though sidenoting here that 90's cartoons are kinda infamous for getting away with a massive amount of stuff that would never fly these days). But for some I have to ask - Why does it feel like quite a few times episodes get axed not due to kids having any issues with em, but due to their parents getting ticked off by things like same gender couples etc, as well as in general just wanting to delete anything that might make their child ask them so-called "difficult questions" that cause em to challenge their own rather narrow-minded world view? Which I feel there is a word for....ah yes! It's called learning, or growing as a person in some scenarios. Feels silly to axe stuff for the convenience of such narrow-minded individuals who supposedly do it in the name of their kids, when in reality kids themselves aren't getting negatively impacted, and neither are the parents...though they sure seem to like to think they are.
