Might be over analysing, but that brief "don't skip ahead" before he asked her made it appear as if he had already played out the scene (or dream in this case) in his mind and knew the outcome. Incredible writing in any case.

That other scene where he says “that’s probably the meanest thing I’ve ever heard” and looks completely devastated about realizing who is friend really is was also really got me.

Wow, now that I've seen this again, it really does feel like he was ready to off himself here, but ran into her and it changed his mind for a moment. Like, realizing that Padraic wasn't as nice as he thought was what initially made him lose all hope. But running into her gave him a spark of hope that he knew was highly unlikely but just wanted to give it one last shot. Unfortunately, he was right, there was never any hope for him. I can't believe I missed it the first time I watched. I genuinely thought the prediction of the old woman of two people dying would be Jenny and Colm. Turns out, it was Dominic.

It was Colm in the end. If he could cut his fingers off just for Padraic talking to him.. he could kill himself when Padraic starts to make Colm's life a living hell. In the end you'd see the old lady also holding the stick while staring at the body of water. The old lady kind of resembles death but with a hook to fetch dead body from water instead of a scythe.

I think it's because it's the right balance of kind and firm for that scenario on top of Dominic knowing that "No" was going to be the only outcome. Siobhan lets him down easy, but leaves no doubt that she will never feel romance for him.

It's so weird, how the "There goes that dream" line in the script has an exclamation mark at the end, yet it is just so much more impactful with the way Keoghan says it. As an Irish Islander- this guy’s performance is easily the best portrayal -with his candid emotional sincerity showing through a common Irish demeanour that we call ‘skeety’ where I live.. And though it would refer to sketchy folk - and despite his off-putting quality that is likely a representation of autism when it wasn’t identifiable.. there are many people I know who fit the categorization who are as kind hearted, and witty as his character. Kinda like how Mickey in Snatch turns out to be the cleverest - that kind of guy. Irish slang and prononciation can make the smartest people sound less intellectual also imo tbh. Irish ‘street smarts’ and eccentricities always shine brightly. The one who appears to be s burnt out Irishman or Newfie can give you the best advice ever, be the best friend you have- common it is for sure. Also I wonder how it sounds to non-Irish people who are unaware ‘never’ and ‘ever’ mean the same thing.

Barry's deviations from the script are ALL big improvements e.g. he does not emphasize "that" in "There goes that dream" as the script does, which would've been much worse. "Should have planned this really" is a great ad lib not in the script. He also cut the part about "bony little feet" which seems tonally wrong for the scene. Barry knows what he's doing.

This movie, even though not set in Ireland really reminded me of Hemingway’s writing. The strong performances, script, the pastoral landscapes, the accents… this scene though… it’s the perfect “iceberg theory” on screen. There is so much going on in this scene but only a small percentage of it is visible. When you realize he was on the way to kill himself, it makes it much darker. His story was the most tragic, seeing his one crush at the end and her rejecting him.

The following day, she contemplates his words while sobbing on her bed. Heartbroken, Dominic, realizing he can never be with her, tragically ends his own life by leaping from the same rock into the sea. It's interesting to see how the script differs from final version, changes the tone. The final version cuts out lines from the script. Like in the script when he walks away he says something to her at the end. That was cut out. And what was chosen instead was him walking of silently looking back and taking off his hat.

I saw this film 3x back to back, mainly because I LOVE everything about it, (and also hoping to catch the actual dialogue). On the 3rd watch, I caught that Peadar's (Dom's dad) earlier news about the 29yo man who killed himself in the river might have meant to ironically foreshadow Dom's own (possibly) suicide -since many has mentioned his 'hopelessness' story line. I am so sad for him. And this is such a good scene (among so many other fantastic scenes!)
