I have to say that while I don't hate the current era of Barbie movies, I really wish Mattel didn't have to make all movies from here on out connect to Dreamhouse Adventures and the vlogs. It makes it so that you can't really watch any new movie on it's own without needing extra context, and it limits the potential for new plots. I really wish they could go back to doing movies with original characters that stand on their own.

no, honestly, the lack of Barbie cinematic universe references in the Barbie movie is genuinely maybe my one complaint with it, but it bummed me out so much more than I expected it to. I just feel like the movies were such huge part of so many people's childhoods in the 2000s that, although I understand that it wasn't the premise of this new movie, I think the inclusion of a more clear easter egg would have made so many people so happy. Maybe a mention of an actress Barbie, or a references to the movies while at **minor spoiler here** Mattel HQ, or even an iconic Barbie movie dress being included as part of Barbie's closet. Genuinely just anything that would have been unmissable to people who grew up with these movies as kids

The thing is, this move was made by millennials and older, not gen z who are the ones who grew up with the barbie movies, so they dont have the nostalgia for them, they see them as "those weird cgi barbie movies" and they arent worth noting
@cupcakewithouttheicing Жыл бұрын
@@Badusername2000 I just replied to somebody else about this same thing! I do think that is the reason but at the same time, for a movie that was so thoughtfully made, I do wish somebody had taken more time to look at the WHOLE Barbie history and think about how "newer" Barbie elements were really important to a slightly younger generation (not that young either mind you, a lot if not most of us are in our 20s)

The movie seems to heavily base everything on the 80's aesthetic of Barbie more so anything else.

I have not watched this yet but based on the title, I wanna say this: someone said in a tiktok comment that the reason they didn't reference the Barbie movies as much is because the creators are a generation above us (actual millenials) so they didn't grow up with the movies like we did! Like 35 year olds never watched the movies growing up? So what they care about is the actual different kinds of barbie - which I couldn't relate to as a 25 year old; I just know "barbie can be anything" but I never had different kinds etc. So yeah just a thought!
@cupcakewithouttheicing Жыл бұрын
I 100% agree with that! I'd been thinking of that myself. I think the generation thing is so important here. Most people who played a big role in the creation of the movie were millennials so, too old to have grown up with these movies, but also too young to have kids that grew up with these movies
@shakibzz Жыл бұрын

@eryxsky Жыл бұрын
EDIT: I watched the end part of the video to hear her thoughts so this comment was written before that. We're on the same page with things, so I have absolutely nothing against Caitlin, I see where she's coming from, I unfortunately just can't fully relate if that makes sense (i.e I was fine with not having any BCU references personally because in my head, the BCU and the dolls are separate.) I was thinking this, the movie was solely about the dolls specifically, not the movies bc the movies have their own lore and backgrounds to them. They're two completely separate topics and though you could watch as many Barbie movies as you'd like in preparation for watching the movie itself but it isn't fully necessary since the movie isn't about the movies we grew up watching, and I'm totally fine with that. In fact, as someone who didn't own a whole bunch of Barbie dolls, save for Barbie from TS3, seeing the dolls in the movie opened up a whole new world of dolls I never even knew existed! The whole entire campaign for the movie, from the movie itself down to the premieres and everything else was filled with things I'd never seen before and I absolutely loved seeing a whole new aspect and side of a beloved doll. If the movie was about the Barbie movies then the plot would be completely different -- and, to be fair I don't really think it would've worked out all that well. Barbie dolls have been around since _1959_ whereas these movies started in 2001. That is a HUGE difference between the two things, making this movie about the movies wouldn't have gathered as big of a pull as it did. And I mean that pull for _all_ generations. Margot Robbie said it herself in an interview, this movie had something for _everyone._ If it had been just about the movies, I doubt anyone except those who grew up watching the movies would've gone to see it. It wouldn't have been as big of a hit as it currently is.
@strabababerry Жыл бұрын
I get that Greta and (in the movie) Gloria both experienced earlier Barbie stuff, but the movie *did* include 2000s stuff - such as the Midge that was referenced (from 2002) and the "Pooper Scooper" Barbie's dog (2006) were featured. There was only one BCU easter egg, which was a poster of Barbie: A Fairy Secret (2011) hidden in the background of one scene. And I guess you can count the Dua Lipa mermaid Barbie? Since I believe she's referencing the pretty new Mermaid Power movie (2022). I don't think there were any other inclusions of Barbie movie things, which was really disappointing for me. Even including a small moment at the beginning where they showed all of the different Barbies and one of them was a BCU Barbie would've been nice. I personally don't understand the separation between the various Barbie dolls and the Barbie movies because those movies were made with the intent of selling dolls. The Barbie movie was pretty good, but I was disappointed in the lack of 2000s-onward Barbie stuff.

Yes! Kelly Sheridan came back solely due to the fans wanting her to come back. I don't know if its available to see anymore, but around 2013 I found petitions and videos dated back to 2010 when the casting first changed where fans demanded her to come back and they didn't see it as fair since she did the voice for so long. In a Puppy Adventure was Kelly's offical last Barbie movie and Mattel did her dirty (in my opinion tbh) as they didn't even tell her that she wasn't coming back and she found out through a teaser trailer of Spy Squad on Twitter. I haven't seen her talking about it since - so I wonder if she refuses to be interviewed about her time doing the voice due to what happened with Mattel.

I liked the Barbie movie, but felt that it got preachy at times with its morals. Also, the Mattel Executives subplot didn't need to exist, since I honestly forgot about them until they popped up again.

This is funny, I watched other people on KZbin react to the Three Musketeers, and everyone seems to have the idea that Corinne travels to France? Why? In this movie, she is French. She even says that she's from Gascogne, a region in France. The same region d'Artagnan comes from, as he is her father🤷🏽♀️ So, is it because she speaks AmE or why do people think she's not from France? I think everyone in this movie speaks American English, so I don't get it🤷🏽♀️

There is also a pegasus statue in the beach scenes, which some are saying references Barbie of the Magic Pegasus but I still wanted more OG Barbie movie easter eggs

Hot question - what happened to Kelly? She was Barbie’s little sister when we were kids but now she just replaced by Chelsea, Skipper, and Stacie? Sad
@kpopoholic_4623 Жыл бұрын
Kelly and Chelsea are actually the same character. Kelly was actually known as Shelly in Europe, and eventually they just combined the names and rebranded her as Chelsea in 2011
@hannahlamagna Жыл бұрын
@@kpopoholic_4623 I love both of them I grew up with Chelsea but I'm making a barbie doll series and both will be in it and the text stories the same person thing is iffy because Chelsea is more if a prankter sne kelly doesn't seem that she is like that
@hannahlamagna Жыл бұрын
Stacie and skipper are the older sisters if kelly and Chelsea
@kpopoholic_4623 Жыл бұрын
@@hannahlamagna Well Mattel confirmed themselves that Chelsea and Kelly are the same character. You can find the information on the Kelly fandom wiki. But you can do whatever you want with your own stories

The live action movie was really good, I was a bit sad that they didn't make a fairy-tale adaptation or original classical story similar to the animated movies, but I do hope in the future they could make a live action Barbie Diaries since the plot is fantastic and could be as iconic as Mean Girls or Clueless. Or they could make a live action musical of Princess and the Pauper like they did with Fairytopia (the song Lavernas Formula is a bop). I would be so happy if they could get back to their roots and produce classical movies like they used to 💕

you’re a barbie genius and you’ve explained everything perfectly, i really expected that barbie (2023) would give an homage to the barbie we know and love since childhood, but it was just a toy story truman show story

I agree. Bibble needs to be on the big screen. Also Preminger somehow XD

I loved it, and there's so much more to barbie that just the 2000s movies, though I agree there should have been way more references

Have you ever heard / washed the mini spin off series Kelly Dream Club? It was such a staple in my childhood and thought I dreamt it up, it’s a pretty interesting piece of Barbie media Lore!
