The Bard's Tale III: Thief of Fate - Commodore 64 title sequence animation.
Graphics: Todd J. Camasta.
Music: Kurt Heiden.
Programmer: "Burger" Bill Heineman.
Interplay Productions Inc., distributed by Electronic Arts, 1988.
Come hear the tale of Skara Brae-
A god returned to have his way.
Creatures of darkness, spawn of night,
The Mad One's kin destroyed the site.
Defenders fell, their bane come true,
Garth, Roscoe, Kylearan, too!
As doom approached, the helpless fled.
It did no good, the streets ran red.
Survivors few, they sit and mope,
with but one final ray of hope:
'Cross time and space, the legends say,
Heroes at last! To steal the day!

I remember hours, weeks, and months with drawing maps by hand, using the code wheel, bitching about Brilhasti and hunting for Stoneblades for the entire party.

Sigh...back when games required you to think instead of handing the answers to you in the form of multiple choice answers. It's saddening how the quality of the games have degraded in the pursuit of the most epic graphics and multimedia presentation.

Why were you drawing maps by hand? The game had an auto-map system, which is actually quite revolutionary for the time.

Knowing locations of spinners, darkness, heath-damage areas ect. was nice, when coming back to the game from a longer break or a replay. As I recall the automap feature, it just placed walls and doors and had no specific information on locations.

I have a pretty distinct memory of the automapper and I'm pretty sure it shows detail and not just the spaces where you've traveled, though that was the main focus. I could be wrong, however.

(Long after): The automap showed basically walls, doors, and where you'd stepped. It also showed one-way walls accurately, and maybe invisible walls distinctly. But even reading doors reliably was super difficult. I'd say the automap was mostly an assistant to drawing your own maps.
