The Barnsley Coalfield. The Worsbrough Dale Mining Disasters by Dave Cherry

The Barnsley singer and film maker researches the three pits that exploded in the nineteenth century causing nearly 300 fatalities.
Darley Main, in 1854 had 75 men killed, Edmunds Main in 1862 had 59 fatalities and the Swaithe Main in 1875 had another 143 miners lost.
Dave visits the sites of the old pits using modern drone footage. He then travels to the NUM offices in Barnsley to see the archive union minutes and interviews the mining historian Brian Elliott. A fascinating film of long forgotten tragic events.

Wonderful what you have done this should taught at Barnsley schools it's a giant part history and the hardship they suffered

Thanks so much for this. My great great grandfather Amos James was killed in the Lund hill disaster, and my great grandfather David James married the widow of H B Akers who died in Swaithe Main. So it was great to see the way it looked then and now.

Great piece of work. Some of my childhood playgrounds on it. One of the Swaithe shafts had not been filled when I was a young boy. A single strand of barbed wire was the safety fence. We used to throw bricks down and wait for the splash the original shafts were over 200 metres deep. The Darley Main shaft was concreted over but it had ventilation pipes along the side so again we used to push stones through them to hear them fall and hit water.

i did notice on the edmonds pic that the old canal boats with its sails on the old canal ive been tracing the old canal out at roystone recently also boats with sails fr moving the coal very interesting

No the Edmunds only worked the Barnsley bed seam . There was no way through. Thanks for your interest Dave

@@linka347 No Barrow was up the hill past the Red Lion and over the top towards Blacker Hill. I worked there from 1962 to 1974. There were 3 pits close together. Platts Common and Rockingham were there.

Hi x thanks for this lovely film. My great great grandad Aaron Kilner got killed at Edmunds pit in 1866 crushed by a boulder. He was one of the early families in Jarratts. I'm not sure which house it was but great grandad Jack and Selina Kilner when my grandma was born lived at number 23 Jarratts. When I was young my dad tried to explain the location of Edmunds main but I could never picture it! It was lovely to see the old maps.
