Just come from my brother-in-law's funeral, he had requested this to be played there! Got to love his sense of humour! Rest in peace Ray.

Used to listen to these guys back in the 1980s, was introduced to Cheech and Chong in the 1970s, always loved comedy and parody... always loved this song, and little white bum, but somehow I totally forgot about the Barron Knights until a clip showed up on my KZbin feed a week ago of their Top of the Pops Christmas appearance in 1963...

My band and I were lucky enough to work with these guys as support act in Adelaide South Australia in the 80s we were a Beatles cover band. We learned a lot about showmanship from these crazy people. lol

I liked the BK's since their very first record, and had the pleasure of chatting to Duke at a show in Yeovil, 1996. He offered to buy me a drink - what a nice chap! RIP Duke - thanks for all the fun, I still love it all.

It's the song I remember most. I've written parodies for over 40 years now and I admit I cannot match the wit in this song. 30 years ago I had a 2 hour video of their shows. It was stored where I thought was out of reach, but my dear 6 year old son climbed up the wall unit & used it to tape cartoons! Grrrrrr. Forgiven, but NEVER forgotten. I have never been able to buy a dvd. Any help please??

Since hearing this song the lyrics keep getting jumbled in my head as I try to remember them so my brain makes up lines such as..."She then picked up the toothpast..the missing bride was gorne" and other randomness lol, anybody else? I love this song...I think, stuck with it anyways ha

The original "Les compagnons de la chanson" were good (within the limits of the recording technology then) too. [But of course whenever you hear the tune now, it's these words - especially "it wasn't there!" - that come to mind first! It's on a par with Flanders & Swann's "Ill Wind" (1964 kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJukZ5V3ZtannLM ), Flotsam & Jetsam's "Mrs. Peer Gynt" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnq3gpyZecyCe6M ), Julie Covington's "Housewives' Choice" (1982 kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3SagqF6pJKBhs0 ), or Richard Stilgoe's "Minute Waltz" [anyone got a link to that?] (all of which you should look out) - once heard, you can never hear the tune without hearing those words.]

The line up has changed quite a bit over the years. I can't remember exactly when Barron and Dave left, but they've both been out of the band for some time over fifteen years (in fact, I think it's quite a bit longer than that), having been replaced by Micky and Lloyd respectively. Duke carried on until he fell ill and left the group in 2005; he died in 2009. From the point Duke left, the Barron Knights became a four piece and had to retire "Chapel Lead" and "Peace in the Valley" from their live set. Butch, another founder member, left in early 2007, forcing the retirement of "Hand on the Ear Folk Song" from their live set. These days, Pete is the only original member remaining, but they are still playing as a live band and are worth seeing. They still play some of their parodies as well as sixties and seventies covers. They're great live entertainment even now.

Covered by almost anyone who could sing (Mireille Mathieu and especially Nana Mouskouri did it in several languages), and many who can't. But once you've heard this version, their words keep popping into your head (especially "it wasn't there!!). Like Ill Wind (and the others I've mentioned in another post here).
