This was the first record I ever purchased. I bought this as a 4 year old in 1968 to play on the 2nd hand radiogram I had been given for my birthday. 37 years later, it was the song my bride and I left the altar to when we got married to the surprise and shock of family and friends. Not even the bridesmaids or best babe ( ididnt have a best man) knew what we had planned. :) We skipped out hand in hand, and then fell about laughing outside, leaving a bewildered venue full of people behind us.

As a spotty kid in 1968, it was the last hour at school before the Christmas holidays and our whole class was excited.I struck up with the first word / long note of the song and the rest of the class followed. It felt like every child knew every word and we all belted out the whole thing. Possibly my most vivid memory of school. Anyone reading this who was in the second year at Rothwell Grammar School, form 2 Alpha?

This is very odd, literally discover this song this morning by mistake, notice they're shooting the video in a building site. Notice Lloyd one of my longest subscribed to KZbinrs in the comments saying precisely that. They are called the scaffolds though so it makes some sense? Also is that Roger McGough in the hat!?

@@unrealdev5178 I was just going to comment on the choice of site, then I noticed the comment, then I noticed the commenter, then I was going to reply that I thought it was obvious that Lindy would be here, then I noticed your reply, then I noticed that this sentence is way too long, and contains way too many instances of the word 'notice'. Anyway, love Lindy's videos, I always thought this was an Irish Rovers' song.

Slightly before i was born... [ 1974 ] This was a Christmas number 1 in 1968. I only came across this the other day... as I am setting up a Christmas quiz [ every year ] This year .. Christmas number 1's. sadly when I spotted this ... i hadn't a clue what or who it was by.. and I love it... as a Christmas song. why you may ask... The fun factor [ xmas is about fun.. ] The drink factor [ also a xmas feel ] And the bells towards the end.. My favourite band is the Pet shop boys who got a Xmas number 1 in 1987.. with always on my mind... which has nothing about Christmas about it.. which got me in a negative mindset when I saw the past 10 - 20 yrs or so... the past 20 yrs have been poor xmas number ones. like ladbaby [ someone jail him ] or spice girls... ed sheeran not perfect... apart from wham - last Christmas 2023.. but... with hope and my input we might [ hope ] we can improve.. just like this great fun song... shakin stevens... paul mccartney .. slade.. chris rea... cliff richard [ last resort "Where are you"... Merry Christmas 2024 anyhow.....to all that read this... & have a great time. and I hope you all a successful 2025.

Man there’s something so sad and poignant about this video even though it’s upbeat and joyful (except for the last verse!) - perhaps it’s the massive amount of time gone by since this song was released and the vast amount of childhood memories associated with it i dunno. The song had a what would now be a all star line up with Jack Bruce on bass and backing vocals , Graham Nash on guitar and backing vocals , Reg Dwight (Elton John) on piano and backing vocals , Tim Rice (who was working as a gopher at the time) on tambourine and backing vocals, Keith Moon played some drum parts and backing vocals . There was a Beatle connection Ringo’s drum kit was used with overcoats stuffed in the bass drum to get a muffled sound. Lily the pink was replaced at no 1 on dec 31st 1968 by Ob-ladi,ob-la-da by Marmalade only to regain the no 1 spot again a week later and a week after that Marmalade went back to no 1.
