I watched this over and over again, translated it in Dutch, 'till I memorized every single word. I went to work, and halfway the evening I performed this standing on the bar. After a short silence I was applauded by my employer, and 12 drunks who shaked my hand, thanked me, and went home. Thank you!

Being the guy he describes at the end and almost shedding a tear as if to say, "he likes me, he really likes me!" So good to get recognized as a quality customer who doesn't start shit at a bar lol.

Regardless of whether I walk up to the bar and order 5 drinks for myself and my party, or 5 different people walk up to the bar and order 1 drink each, you still spend the same amount of time to make 5 drinks, and aren't doing anything extra that isn't within the scope of your normal job duties. Making drinks all night is your job. So in either case, I don't see how doing your job entitles someone to a gratuitous donation. Your employer is obligated to pay your salary for the work you perform.

I like to think I fit the "I know where I am" mold. The only difference from what you describe is, while I do stop right before I get sloppy, I don't get up and leave right away. After closing my tab and tipping generously, I'll ask for an ice water and sit there drinking it. Then I'll read the room: If they need my stool and/or the bartender looks like he or she is ready for the night to end, I'll thank them and say good night. But if it's quiet and they look like they wouldn't mind the company (or if I'm a regular; I don't demand free drinks every other round or exemption from last call or that they drop everything the moment they see me drain my glass, but this is one perk I do insist on), I'll ask them to keep the water coming till I'm sure I'm good to drive home, and will leave them an extra dollar or two for their troubles.

I agree with below posters who pointed out that waiters should be tipped per U.S. law. However, I will only tip for adequate service. A bartender who is courteous, welcoming, asks what I would like, because I may just ask for a club soda on an off day, and gives me the beer bottle together with the glass or ask "would you like a glass", also ask about my day, will get a handsome tip. Bad service would be either slapping the usual beer in front of me without saying a word and walking away, or having the bus boy do it. This beer that you're charging 7.00 plus for, is 2.00 at the liquor store across the street and I'll have a better experience just picking it up there. That would get me walking out, with the unrequested beer open on the bar.

You are correct. I have never, would never, and will never work at any type of a service job whatsoever. That's a personal choice, because I choose to create better options in my life for myself. I do not look down on people that do menial labor or unskilled labor jobs, because I know those jobs are necessary functions within society. However, a waitress taking a grand total of 5 minutes taking my order and bringing food doesn't justify me paying her a full hour's wages. I'm not her employer.

Yes! I'm the last kind! I always tip $1 per beer, and usually $2 for shots or mixed drinks. More if it requires more than just mixing Jack and Coke in a glass. Last night I got ignored for 10 straight minutes, and when she turned to me to take my, she just walks away from the bar. She comes back a couple minutes later with another bartender, sees her friends at the other end, and proceeds to get their drinks before mine. I tipped the other one $11 on 4 drinks to rub it in.

I have to say to browsebot: As a single female, one of the top things that I very deliberately take notice of on first dates (or subsequent dates following said first date) is the way that a man treats the servers at the establishment we are frequenting. How he treats these people very often determines whether or not I will have any kind of relationship with them. What I'm saying here is: be nice to your employee, it shows characters and will get you further with your dates (female or male).

Life is all about choices. If you choose to become complacent, content with working an unskilled, menial labor job, then you will reap what you sow in life based upon the effort you put forth to better yourself. Personally, I only go to bars to meet women. I don't go because I am stressed and need to drink alcohol to relieve my mental and emotional burdens and unwind, because I have created a wonderful life for myself by choosing to get off my ass and work hard for what I want in life.

I usually tip well I drink Guinness unless it's a bar with a bunch of different craft brews so generally at $6.00 a piece I tip between $2-$3 a beer and generally end up with a $25-30 total tip

The worst is when people say to me, "I used to be a bartender". This usually means that they don't have as much daily income and will result in three thousand questions to test my knowledge, a lesson on how to make their signature drink (normally a bar standard) and a below average tip.

I was not being arrogant.I was simply stating facts. The service industry largely employs people performing menial, unskilled labor. There is no debating that.I don't look down on people doing that type of work, because I realize that they not only perform functions that are necessary within society, but also work that I would never choose to do. Without being condescending, as anyone's life can be full and rich, I wouldn't trade my life for that of an unskilled, menial laborer.

We like our jobs, that is why we are standing up for ourselves.Servers & bartenders are MY people, funny, smart on their feet, hard working. The system of our culture is one reason we chose this path, tip system is an honor system of which WE are NOT the ones who broke that honor.

I work in a nightclub, 60-70% of the bartenders we employ including myself have a daytime job or going to school. We aren't unskilled, we look after you and we give you a good time. And all we want in return is that you respect the job we are doing. Not to be bullied or having you rant on about how pathetic we are, but if you would like I can come to your job and behave like you do at my job. Good luck buddy boy, I hope I will see you soon.

I never said anyone involved was content. You don't know their story. Perhaps they're working harder than you ever have, multiple jobs to pay for school, etc. You don't know that. Just because you're happy with the choices you've made doesn't mean everyone else has had the same opportunities that you've had to make such choices.

That's great. So since all tipped employees are guaranteed minimum wage no matter what, then they should do the job that they are paid for, and not look for income supplementation from customers. Tipped employees are not employed by customers, so customers are under no legal obligation to pay their wages. If waiters are unsatisfied with their wages, they should take it up with their employer, and not think they are in any way entitled to a tip for doing their job, because they aren't.

Two girls walk up to the bar. One orders a frozen daiquiri. They wait for you to finish and clean the damn blender, and then the other one says "I'll have one too". And being a bartender in Holland 9 out of ten people never tip at all, not even on an 80 euro round of all different drinks made in record time and served with a smile, because "I don't get a tip for treating you when you come to the hospital, do I?"

Actually, all tipped employees are GUARANTEED minimum wage if their tips plus their pre-tip salary does not exceed minimum wage. This is US Federal Law under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Please educate yourself and stop believing that waitresses and bartenders and locked into a wage of $2.13 simply because their employer chooses to use the Tip Credit. I have owned and operated businesses that have had tipped employees, and I know the law. Most people are told lies and they believe it.

Yes and we would like to be treated with respect like most of us will give to you... We don't want to have people shouting they have been waiting for an hour or some bullshit. About the tipping I tend to agree I am from England not a massive tipping culture here, but if someone orders a bottle of champagne or a massive order on a manic night and I have to then spend time making that while loads of other people wait, it would be nice to get a little sorry for the trouble ->

Don't worry I'm a bar tender guy!!TO FUCKING DAMN RIGHT! One night the upstairs bar was hired out by another bar company to hold their annual managers awards night. I Spent the whole night hearing lines like: "I've been on bars since you were a kid" "I've studied mixology for 10 years, I know what I'm talking about". I actually invited this guy behind the bar to show me how you shake a drink after you've added lemonade to it. The Boston shaker promptly pop'd open and coverd the idiot in drink.

I fail to see how you construe doing your job, and serving drinks, constitutes you "taking care of me" or "giving me a good time". My only expectation of you is to serve drinks, not take care of me, and not to give me a good time. I am responsible for taking care of myself, and ensuring I have a good time. That's not your function. When I enter a venue that serves alcohol, I do not bully the employees or rant. I don't even interact with them other than for their actual function. Serve us drinks.

Not tipping is "theft of services"? You obviously have no understanding of US Law, which is what I would expect from someone not educated enough to know the difference between "fare" and "fair". As wait staff, you are not employed by the customer, and they are under no legal compulsion to give you a handout. Read the US Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and understand that your employer MUST guarantee you a wage of at least minimum wage. Hence customers owe you nothing. Stop being a beggar.

+sisbrawny I always enjoy this argument. And I could even empathize with its rationale at corporate restaurant chains. Those places have plenty of money. But the fact of the matter is that drinking and dining out is a fiscal and social luxury. So if you can afford to buy $12 cocktails, why wouldn't you want to invest your money in locally owned establishments that employs local people when no one seems to have a problem with their tax dollars paying for corporate bailouts to the richest people on the fucking planet.... "Yes Mr. Tax Man, spend my money any way you see fit, but FUCK these guys who are trying to pay their sable bill..."
