All of the commercial department stores in our area have closed down due to that 'trickle down effect'--I am jumping on the opportunity but have not shot in door portraits for ages. This is just perfect to warm me up to doing simple set ups...low fuss..high impact. Thank you ..thank you for all your great tips...well done.

Love that you used a sphere to demonstrate lighting. i learned lighting as a photography major in college way back in 1999; my professor used this same method. Lighting is a lot of trial and error while simultaneously using tried and true methods.

For anyone wondering what Rembrandt lighting is. It is a lighting technique that is used in studio portrait photography. It can be achieved using one light and a reflector, or two lights, and is popular because it is capable of producing images which appear both natural and compelling with a minimum of equipment. Rembrandt lighting is characterized by an illuminated triangle under the eye of the subject on the less illuminated side of the face. It is named for the Dutch painter Rembrandt, who often used this type of lighting.

Oh and the nylon / panty hose trick is great, another trick that cinematographers use is to put the material (usually panty hose) in between the lens and the film / sensor. This gives a very diffused / soft focus look to vintage pieces etc.

A little confused. This is titled, "The Basics of a One Light Setup: A Lighting Tutorial" but as soon as you start using the model there's a square softbox as key lighting plus an octobox for fill. Is the one light portion simply the initial setup using the ball?

Nice, JP, I always like your videos. I am still not entirely sure what you meant by "core". I haven't heard that term before and didn't find much when I tried to google it. Is it merely the brightest part of the fill? And if so, are you saying you should leave that hot spot away from the highlight to shadow line? If I understood that correctly, that means you'd want highlight, transition to shadow, transition to fill "highlight", transition back to shadow, all happening on the face. That doesn't sound right, so just wondering. Thanks!

Is that a photography oriented ball or it's just a random object? What material is this and what would you suggest getting? I'd love to have something like that to test light setups before getting people in the studio.

It's the difference in the white balance for the tungsten lights on set vs. the 1D C's LCD display. The bluish cast on the 1D C's LCD comes from the camera shooting the BTS video, NOT on the 1D C shooting the model.

I love your videos. And I think this was a great video. With that said please don't take this the wrong way but the title to this video really doesn't match. I think people are looking for simplistic tutorials in the end up watching a ton of these videos for hours and not learn anything. Because it's above your paygrade. And this is a great video don't get me wrong. My issue is the title seems like it's going to be a different type of video.
