The saturation mode of curves is also great to saturate or desaturate shadows/highlights only.

Useful and well done tutorial, Nathan, especially use of droppers and masks. How does clipping to a layer below work when there are multiple adjustment layers stacked above a target layer?

You can clip multiple adjustments to the layer and just effect that layer. Anything not clipped will effect the whole image.
