Thank you so much for answering my question!! I just finally got it!! After I reviewed your explanation I went back an practiced from the Essentials book we study from and a lightbulb went off in my head. I finally see what my teacher was trying to tell me about keeping your thumb behind your second finger. Without that we will always be struggling on staying in tune. Also, your explanation helped me finally see what my teacher had been trying to drill into my head!! Lol. Thanks again for answering it really helped me out a lot!!!

An old manager once told me that "studies show a person needs to be told the same thing (thus repeated) on an average of 17 times to remember and actually do that that thing is". Was he just having a laugh or really justified? I'll answer that in a later talk ;-)

If you shift the thumb this is a shift, followed by backward extension. A forward extension should be performed without the thumb sliding. The hand moves forward while the thumb extends at the knuckle, allowing the extension.

Yes, the the thumb stationary we can temporarily play "out of position" like in m. 26 of Bach's Prelude Suite I for the Bb and G#, but you already knew that. What I am demonstrating is painless and proper total hand position for all extended positions along the neck.

@@CelloCoach In very fast passages involving extensions is it not most common to avoid moving the thumb? I understand moving it avoids a little bit of tension, but it doesn't seem practical to make moving the thumb the default way of doing an extension.
