There is one thing that Gootecks failed to mention that I'm just now learning as a new stick player: stick placement is important to getting accuracy down. I was doing the exercise he gives here of doing fireballs over and over in order to make sure I could get the motions down, but noticed sometimes one side I could execute 8-10 times consecutively while the other side I might do 3-5. It wasn't specific to one side either; if I could pull it off on the right side the left suffered and vice versa. I tried changing hand positions which just made it uncomfortable on my left hand and wrist trying to hold and move the stick in somewhat awkward positions. It wasn't until I adjusted the position of the controller in my lap that I started to get cleaner and cleaner inputs on both sides without gating (hitting the edges of the joystick opening). I actually had to sit it off center and rotated about 5 degrees to find a spot that's comfortable. It's probably going to be different from person to person and stick to stick but I figured I should share for some folks that are having an issue with accuracy.

Not sure if you still receive comments from viewers since this video was made 2 years ago, but I just want to say thank you for making tutorial videos on how to use fight sticks correctly. Too many people believe that fight sticks will allow for correct input every time. Not true. It takes practice and patience. I recently purchased my first fight stick and before I used the Xbox One controller to play Killer Instinct. I wanted to try a fight stick with Killer Instinct so I purchased one. I was holding the stick wrong, your video corrected this for me. I was placing my right hand over the buttons wrong and your video corrected this for me as well. I'm going to practice my movement like you suggested and my commands in Practice mode. Again, thank you for making these videos!

Thanks Gootecks. Being an old guy, I grew up with bat tops in the arcade. Using a ball top is very foreign to me. For the life of me, I cannot FADC into a 2QCF ultra on the left if I'm using a ball top, but I can with a bat top. Now, I'd love to see how you do that with Ryu, using that grip *during a match*. Training mode is one thing but doing it under pressure it where it matters.

Thanks gootecks. Your PC processor analogy really put things into perspective for me. I find that when I drop combos during a match I get frustrated and lose confidence in my execution, which causes me to focus more on that and not making good reads and whatnot. After playing for so long I guess I've felt like I pretty much got all the basic stuff down and I never practice it, instead opting to work on more and more advanced techniques. I'm going to spend more time in training mode on basics just to sharpen my fundamentals.

Thanks gootecks for this video because three weeks ago, I bought my first fightstick ever and I never had the chance to play fighting games in the arcade because I was too young. Your video (including those from Maximilian) made my decision clear enough. This can be easily applied to any fighting games (or even spectacle fighter games). I bought the T.E.2. after playing four months of Killer Instinct with a pad and... oddly enough, it took less than a week to be used to it despite some pain in my wrists. One thing is I've got better doing uppercuts on the fightstick compared to the pad because of the corners and my overall inputs with all characters (in KI) are much more precise (except actual combos with certain characters). Again, I'm not a pro but I did feel a huge difference when I switched to thr stick. In a single week, I got passed almost everything and I no longer look at the stick so I can do my inputs correctly and my brother was surprised. Everything almost come up on the screen naturally. I try to practice my inputs every single freaking day and when something is wrong in my inputs, combo executions or I don't feel good, I just don't play the game. However, it all comes down to personal preferences and I understand. I'm now used to the fightstick but even then, those explanations can be applied to those using a pad when it comes to execution or super basics. It's well done, very professional, very clear for anyone and it might be the best first step for anyone who want to get into the genre even if it's brutal. Thanks again.

The distance between your fingers and the buttons is measured in milliseconds, you should always have your fingers in contact with the buttons, to remove that lag. Also, learn how to preload. Preload is positioning your fingers in such a way so that you can almost seamlessly move from one set of buttons to the next, again this transition is measured in milliseconds. Do everything you can to remove these two sources of input lag.

i am playing street fighter and other fighting games for years, but as i only have a pc and never bought a gamepad i always played using my keyboard. so i used my right hand and the arrow keys to navigate my char und used qwe / asd / and some single keys around them with my left hand. i am not an intense player, but i really, really like to improve myself, and the keyboard often misreads inputs that require 3 buttons be pressed at the same time. of course i can do dash cancels and 360°-inputs like spd but some inputs, mixups and combos are just not possible to do with a keyboard (like double 360°-ultras, a lot of charging moves/combos, and more). so i got myself an arcade stick (madcatz soul calibur edition), as i don't like gamepads and always loved playing in arcade halls if i had the possibility. i hope this tutorial and the execution tutorial can help me in this reorientation, even it it will take quite some time to get into it. so hopefully the changeover will be worth it. (: is there anything someone can tell me for this "new journey"? thanks a lot.
