The eye makeup is actually so you don’t see his skin around his eyes when he’s wearing the mask! Past Batman actors wore the same makeup in real life, but they pretended it didn’t exist in the world of the film! This is the first Batman movie to acknowledge the makeup!

I do have some problems with this movie, I don't think it quite lives up to the hype personally. But this is a fantastic bit of development. It's absolutely brilliant how he goes from a symbol of fear to one of hope. And before anyone goes after me, I'm not saying at all that this isn't a great movie. It's amazing. Overhyped? Sure. Still amazing.

My favorite recurring part was batman's relationship with the mayor's son. Batman sympathizing with him at the beginning. Bruce deciding to save him instead of go after the riddler at the funeral. The kid being the first civilian to accept help from batman at the end. So much is communicated about the themes of the movie and the character of batman in the few interactions they shared.

I also love how Bruce sprints to the kid to tackle/save him from the car at the funeral, and you can clearly see after that the car veers away from the kid, but Bruce didn’t know that would happen, didn’t wait to find out, just went straight for saving the mayors son. It could come off as badly staged, but it doesn’t. It’s so perfect.

I feel like it is such an understated part of Batman's character at times, but despite his brooding and cold nature he will do absolutely ANYTHING to save a kid in need. He sees himself in every kid that lost a parent due to crime or is just in a bad place and will do his best to comfort them (The season 2 finale of Justice League Unlimited is the prime example of what Batman should stand for)

I actually love how they handled the batman eye makeup in this film. in all the others they just pretend that he never had any on when taking off his helmet... like we all knew and could tell that they had to wear black eye makeup in order to have the "proper" batman look, but this one plays with that fact to show in what state bruce is in when he takes off the mask. this is the year two batman film we deserved!! also, it completes the grungy aesthetic the film was clearly going with with the Nirvana and the muscle car 🙌

I was always wondering why every other live action movie of Batman had the actor in black eye makeup when the mask is on, only to have it magically disappear when they take it off. At least this movie addressed that the eye makeup is part of the disguise, so that his eyes look darker, and harder to identify.

Fun Fact: The scene where Darth Vader goes through Rebel soldiers was in the movie Rogue One. That film’s cinematographer Greg Frazier is the cinematographer for The Batman as well. So not far from a coincidence in making the connection between the two.

Something I really liked about this movie is that despite it's overly serious tone, it doesn't shy away from the goofiness that comes with the concept of Batman. Bruce is very emo and dramatic in this and no one takes him too seriously (only Gordon and Riddler do), Catwoman and Penguin make fun of the fact that he goes around calling himself "Vengance" and Alfred is constantly trying to make him tone it down a bit, like a father who has an emo teenager as a son. I also love that the voice over is actually explained in the movie, like... The movie starts with some very brooding Batman voice over, and him talking about how he doesn't live in the shadows but that he IS the shadows (I don't remember the exact line), and at first you think it's just an stylistic choice, that Matt Reeves was just doing this to emphasize the noir roots of the whole thing, but then he adds a scene where we actually see that the voice over is what Bruce writes in his fucking diary when he gets home. I find that funny as fuck and very ridiculous but because the movie never makes fun of it and treats it with the same level of intensity as everything else, it doesn't come out as dumb. Same thing with the car and how Batman moves and all that, he's constantly putting a performance and the movie is emphasizing that but not to laugh at it but rather making it just part of the character (like in the comics). This is by far the dorkiest Batman ever, I love it.

There are many goofy and humorous moments. Even the Riddler has his dark comedy moments, like the first time he says "goodbye!" and when he greets his fringe followers in his normal voice. I laugh every time, but know I shouldn't because he's so depraved, and yet I can't help embrace all the implanted comedic tones. The penguin interrogation scene is silly, and I love it! This movie is serious in many ways and yet has so many comedic moments -- but never too silly. The movie has fun with itself!

To the people, he's just some asshole playing dress up but you know it goes deeper than him playing dress up, he's psychologically traumatised and his whole personality changed. Catwoman and penguin are not making fun of him. Everyone around him calls him "vengeance" goes to show how much this concept spreads and inspires others in the movie. The Riddler (Paul Dano) confesses that the Batman was his inspiration for putting on a mask and pursuing vengeance against the corrupt authorities of Gotham. The Riddler himself, frustrated with the Renewal plan going awry and the rich getting richer off its back, inspires other disillusioned Gotham locals to take to the streets on a quest for vengeance. "Vengeance" thus becomes synonymous with the rage of Gotham's underclass, and it's not until the end of the movie that the Batman realizes the bad influence his "I am vengeance" line can have. When he hears the Riddler's goon saying "I'm vengeance," the Batman realizes that his vengeance won't stop other people's, as long as the motives for turning to crime haven't been abolished. And about the diary and voice-over, it's not ridiculous it's brilliant actually! Don't you know he is the world's greatest detective? It's obvious he keeps journals. And how the cases affecting him personally. And those are not just fucking diaries They’re actually excerpts from a journal he keeps! Yes, this Bruce keeps a record of his cases and the progress he’s made to clean up Gotham. It also seems the only other way this much more broken version of Bruce knows how to vent - besides, you know, going out at night and beating up criminals. and he did while he was away for 15 years of training before becoming Batman. There’s this cool book where it’s as if Bruce was writing about different crimes he was trying to investigate, and all that was going on. It’s pretty cool, That's Black case book. Grant Morrison introduced Batman’s Black Casebook, a record of the Caped Crusader’s weirdest unsolved crimes. First-time a batman movie uses it and matt reeves did it brilliantly. You just missed the whole movie and interpreted it in the wrong way possible.

I went to see this movie opening night, and it was the greatest theater experience of my life. The entire place was completely packed, I've never seen so many people going to see a movie. Everybody was loving it but when the Batmobiles engine ignited, and Oswald slowly turned around in pure fear, there was an air of anticipation in the cinema. Then the Batmobile erupted forward and the hundreds of people in that showing including me jumped up a cheered for a solid minute. Keep in mind that where I live, people literally never cheer or applaud at movies. I guess Batman is just such an iconic character for so many generations, and we all were just so excited to see Batman kick some ass in the new Batmobile. Loved this movie

Robert Pattinson is an amazing actor. I'm so glad he's known for more than just "being the Twilight guy" now a days. Really good, intense, dramatic actor As for the tone of the film, it is 100% like Seven! Colin Farrell does an excellent job as the Penguin in this movie! (yep that was him under all that stuff!) Would heavily recommend Matt Reeves Planet of the Apes trilogy. Andy Serkis is also in those movies!

Ironically, his Bruce Wayne is probably the closest he's been to Edward Cullen personality-wise ever since wrapping Twilight lol. Those two characters are actually delightfully similar. But hey, just another reason he was a perfect fit for the role.

I don't say this to gatekeep film fandom in any way, but a lot of casual movie fans can't always differentiate between poor acting and a poorly written character, or even a dull character. Pattinson played Edward Cullen the way the character was written, he's sullen and moody. Pattinson isn't earth shattering in the role, and has improved dramatically since, but he was never *bad* to begin with. Even if he had been bad though, actors, especially young ones, usually improve. Kristen Stewart was pretty rough in Twilight, and a fair few films afterwards lol, she's one of my favorite actors to see on screen now though. She, same as Pattinson, hit the indie circuit hard and really honed her craft.

I don't really care about awards but there is a reason why superhero movies don't tend to get top recognition when the industry votes, and I don't think The Batman is going to be likely to be capturing any of the heavy awards. There just isn't any shortage of great filmmaking, it's just that those films don't tend to be as popular as the ones having people dress up and punch things. I enjoy both kinds.

Reeves and Fraser had ARRI make custom anamorphic lenses for their digital cinema cameras, to make the center incredibly sharp but to fall off dramatically at the edges. They also took the digital film and transferred it to 35mm, then re-scanned it for final digital cpoy, to give it that nostalgic film noir grain and texture. Honestly one of the best filmed and looking movies in a very long time.

If you liked this movie, I'd recommend checking out the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy. Matt Reeves directing starts at the second film onward and he is just as incredible there as he is here. And Andy Serkis is amazing as the star. The whole trilogy is golden imo.

I mean come on, I know people hyped this movie and the movie is good, but that doesn't mean everything gets a pass just to stroke their own ego. One thing I loved is that since this is Batman early in his career, he not only often jumps to conclusions a lot (like accusing Selina of murder or of being a sellout to Falconé, or accusing Penguin of being the rat) which is something he does a lot in The Long Halloween, but he also hasn’t experienced enough of his more outlandish villains to consider thinking far outside of the box that he seems to miss what would be obvious to us who have known our whole lives what lengths his villains would typically go to. Not to mention that he’s so gung-ho about doing things himself that he doesn’t think to ask for help from anyone. And when people do help him (at least at first) he tends to be indifferent or frustrated about it. Because of that, he never asks if anyone knows what the murder weapon is. Batman does eventually grow to lean on people more, and trust their input, probably from lessons he learned from moments like this.

I can't imagine what it would be like for this to be someone's first-ever exposure to the Riddler. Definitely a big change from the usual campier interpretations but also faithful enough to not be unrecognizable, such as forcing someone to answer three riddles in two minutes or die. That's peak Riddler. Being a man-child is also a very common trait for the character.

Matt Reeves directed one of my favorite vampire movies of all time--LET ME IN with Chloe Grace Moretz. 12:04 The Penguin's real first name is Oswald. Hence "Oz." I get the idea he does not like being called the Penguin. (Yes, the Penguin is a classic villain in Batman) 12:33 Saw a really good video essay, comparing this versus Nolan's trilogy. The focus, that hard focus on close-ups with backgrounds blurry, is a signature of Matt Reeves. I loved how the Jokers riddles were given the appearance of needing some sort of intelligence to solve when in some instances it was as simple as listening to the clue phonetically and not actually solving it. This film blew me away..... I've often described it as a murder detective movie that just so happens to be Batman more than a super hero movie because people just expect marvel block buster action when this one has a much slower pace. It's crazy to think that they filmed this during the pandemic and you'd have no idea.

What I loved most about this movie was how realistic it all was. Everyone felt like real people you could actually end up meeting or hear about on the news. It wasn't this over the top grittiness or cartoony vibe that's often in superhero movies/shows, but it still maintained the core essence of Batman. And on top of that the acting in this film is easily a 10/10. I had no idea the Penguin was Colin Farrell (I didn't realize till just now on another comment). And who doesn't love Andy Serkis. All in all this was an excellent movie and deserves waaayy more recognition.

This movie was a detective noir FIRST, superhero movie second. It's why I think Dark Knight is as good as it is, it's a crime drama first. No shade to other comic book movies, but notice that a lot of the best ones have different sub genres of film. Winter Soldier is a spy/political thriller, Spider-Man 2 is a drama, Logan is a friggin western. These are movies that are good FILMS. (In my opinion of course) Edit: also it's a shame that Planet of the Apes hasn't won the poles. One day Nat.. one day.

Also, in case someone else didn't already point it out: The eye makeup choice was actually a realism move. To have only the eyes without the skin around them showing from under the mask, a person would actually need to do that. There are behind-the-scenes videos from other Batman films where the actors are wearing eyeliner. They found that not using that makeup made the actor look weird in the mask. There were also remarks from fans about how when Bruce takes off his mask, his eyes are always pristine in other films and how it breaks continuity and immersion when you know that before removing the mask, the actor had the makeup on. Anyway, that's a cool thing that may not have been apparent.

A lot of people compare this movie to "Batman: Year One." Personally, I got more of a "Long Halloween" vibe: the first scene takes place on Halloween, it's a noir-detective style murder mystery involving Gotham's crime families, involves some of the same characters, the ending hints at a transitional period where Gotham goes from being controlled by the mob to being ruled by supervillains, etc.

Definitely not Year One. Year One he's much more at odds, physically and otherwise, with both the police and the rich as well as the criminals. And the criminals are also a lot less caring about him, and he himself is still seeking and trying to find his identity and style.

It's definitely the Long Halloween but the feel is more Year One from Bruce's perspective. I like how this take on Bruce is more recluse and how it parallels the way Falcone lives his life. 2 powerful men that effects the City of Gotham, yet no one knows who they really are. It makes more sense somehow that Bruce isn't the typical playboy rich guy you always see on film. He's very much like Shakespeare's Hamlet the moment that scene where Falcone nicknamed him the Prince of Gotham. I can see Bruce writing in his journal and on one of the pages is his version of "To Be or Not To Be" where he already resolved his crossroad early on knowing full well that his "Gotham Project" will eventually be the death of him.

I think it's very admirable and telling of Bruce's hope that he decides to stay in Gotham and do what he does despite everyone and everything telling him that Gotham is beyond saving. He notices the few good people in Gotham(Ex. Gordon - one of the few people who comforted Bruce when he lost his parents) and believes that there is a world where Gotham can be a reflection of those good people.

Really adored the movie from a visual standpoint, Gotham City looked amazing very Arkham Knight (recommend playing the Arkham games) the mix of old meets new Gotham that 1930s gothic look meets modern 2020 and hints of 1970s/1980s. Wish we saw a little bit more art deco designs but this is more of a nit-pick as the city felt like the 2nd most Gothic on screen live action Gotham City just behind Tim Burtons Gotham of course. This film being set in 2020s also had modern tech what you'd expected in the 2020s with those massive Monitors on the side of buildings adding so much to the overall look of the city, modern version of classic 1930s billboards. Both Tim Burtons and more so The Animated Series had this very timeless 1930s look from the fashion to the cars and the architecture but it also had modern tech (for the 90s) as the series was set in the 1990s, Gotham just had this really cool hybrid of old and new. The Batman film doesn't go as much into that timeless look but you can see little elements of Gotham past something I really enjoyed. This was where The Dark Knight lacked as much as I love the film's story it's Gotham City was really just Chicago. Batman Begins was alright by far Nolan's best looking Gotham City with the Narrows and that cool Art deco train system adding a lot to the city but the Batman 2022 showed that you can have both a grounded setting but also feature a unique looking city not going as far as the Burton movies which look amazing but also not going too far into the grounded featuring a boring city with no personality like featured in The Dark Knight. I also love the classic 1950s style diner where Riddler was captured just felt so much like the opening of Arkham Knight and it's Gotham in general which drew from every depiction of Gotham from the Neon Lights of Joel Schumacher Gotham to the more retro 1930s artistic from the Burton movies and of course the modern day artistic featured in the Nolan movies. This film nailed the Gothic look while also keeping it more grounded. Wish we got a little bit more retro vibes maybe have some Blimps overhead (actually could've came in handy when the city flooded you know with transport and supplies) along with some retro looking posters and adverts, adore the location where Bruce talked to Falcone that looked very Tim Burton/Arkham series. I enjoyed the city more than the The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises which really lacked that Gothic artistic and felt more like Chicago than Gotham but were still great movies, music was also amazing very much inspired by Shirley Walker who was the composer for the Batman Animated Series creating some of the best Batman music to date. Wasn't a big fan of this rendition of Bruce Wayne felt movies like Mask of the Phantasm (Highly recommend watching it) did a way better job at dealing with the conflict between a younger Bruce and Batman but I can see this version developing overtime which is something I can't wait to see in the sequels. This film drew heavily from the Batman Earth-One issues in one key area. Martha Wayne being an Arkham instead of a Kane pulled right from Batman Earth-One. In almost all renditions Martha is a Kane just like Bruce's cousin Kate Kane who is of course Bat woman. Maybe Kate still exists in this universe but as an Arkham but who knows. Alfred also trained Bruce in both Earth-One and this film with the Earth-One Alfred being a Royal Marine. Since Frank Millers Year One comic Bruce has spent his early years exploring the world coming back to Gotham like we see in Batman Begins which is where he learnt to fight. A Sequel focused around Mister Freeze inspired by his appearance in the Batman Animated Series would be amazing, an interesting villain but also a fun setting go more for a winter theme with blue overtones instead of Red maybe add more colour instead of the film being dark 24/7. Glad you enjoy the film and cannot wait for any future Batman movies/Shows you react to. Highly recommend Mask of the Phantasm along with the DCAU starting with the amazing Batman Animated Series from the 1990s the best version of the character.

That's a yummy reaction. And this film just does everything right. I love the Batmobile as a muscle car, and where the gadgets are replaced with simple suicidal recklessness. I love the leitmotifs. Ave Maria for the Riddler and Something In The Way for Batman. I don't know if viewers generally pick up on that, as the Nirvana leitmotif is just two or three notes. But that is kind of beyond cool.

Also, watch Uncut Gems, Cosmopolis, and The Rover if you want an even better representation of Robert Pattinson's incredible acting. He and Kirsten Stewart are WAY past Twilight, and they're both one of the best actors working today.

Fun fact, DC stands for Detective Comics which is the name that Batman was originally published under. DC merged with Action Comics, which is who published Superman, and just became DC. That’s why this movie feels like a 50s detective Noir film, Batman was always meant to be a detective. As for setting up a sequel, they’ve already confirmed a couple spin-offs, including one for the Penguin and one for Arkham Asylum.

I knew in about the first five minutes of this movie that Pattinson would be my favorite Batman. And I've seen all the others, including the first Burton one, in the theaters and have been a fan of most of them. One thing I also liked was that this Bruce Wayne is the first to visibly admit he wears eye shadow under the cowl. That's why he's shown with all the eye makeup. It's shortly after taking off his cowl/mask.

Fun fact and to answer your question at 42:20 ; this scene was shot in the Glasgow Necropolis in Scotland, a huge old graveyard on a big hill overlooking the city. They're standing in the entrance of one of the big tombs about halfway up (you can see Glasgow Cathedral in the background in some shots), and yes you could get a motorbike up there if you wanted to, as there's a dirt road running up to the top.
