Anyone that complains a movie like this is "too dark" has a very simple concept of what films look like. I wouldn't even take that criticism as having any merit, since it's clearly based on a very limited experience.
@doublep19802 жыл бұрын
Great analysis, couldn't agree more, this movie is absolutely excellent on so many levels. I would just like to add one thing about how the action and more specifically, the fight scenes are shot/choreographed/edited, which is waaay better than what Nolan did in his trilogy with that horrible ''Jason Bourne/ 500 quick-cuts per minute & shaky cam'' style, that ruined action movies since the mid-00's. The fights are shot in a wide angle with as less cuts as possible, in order for the audience to actually see what's going on. The choreography isn't too ''elaborate'',no fancy Kung Fu moves, but instead Batman uses moves that are direct and aim to take out his opponents as soon as possible. Batman's opponents are actually fighting back instead of just waiting their turn to get punched and even manage to hit him several times. So, he's not like an invincible, despite his armor & skills, but still vulnerable. You can clearly see, that the stunt/fight team took inspiration from the Netflix Daredevil series on this, which is ironic because the people who did the fight scenes on Daredevil worked prior on the Batman Arkham videogames. In fact, Charlie Cox's stuntdouble, Chris Brewster, did all the mo-cap for Batman on these games and now the Batman movie is influenced by what they did. It's like they came full-circle.

I have come up with a 9.3 out of 10 rating for "The Batman". Honestly? It could have been 40 minutes longer to give these characters even more depth! This one had the best true-to-the-DC-mood character cast in any live action Batman movie ever: Riddler 💣❔= very dark and disturbed, deeply traumatised terror mastermind; Penguin 🔫🐧 = disfigured, life-hardened macho mobster; Falcone 🎩🎱 = nouveau riche high-society untouchable don; Selina Kyle as Catwoman 💔🐆 = self-made rags-to-make-ends-meet part time waitress / burglar / revenge-seeking tigress with both zeal and elegance; Lt. Gordon 😒👮 = disillusioned, world-weary, hard-headed, dirty good cop; rapid-cycling bipolar, almost suicidal and reckless Bruce Wayne as The Batman 💀🦇 = shell-shocked but highly functional, almost maniacal terror-on-crime warrior running on empty by night + burnt-out, highly reclusive, passive/aggressive PTSD-victim in denial during daytime. All in all: Greatest ALL-PSYCHO anti-hero/rogue gallery with believable powder-keg group dynamics since "Batman Returns" (apart from Alfred 🧐🤵 = lonely beacon of sanity in a Gotham City gone bat-shit bonkers with corruption, misanthropy and violence. Gotham City 🌁⛈️🌃🌪️ = modern age moloch of corruption in daytime and torrents of violent crime at night, and a film-noir style history of both going back for decades (to go just by the looks of it). Camera, direction, cut, cast, score, colour grading, dialogs, characterization, overall mood, pacing = 10 / 10; great overall theme: "The Crow" style "Victims, ain't we all?" mood and PTSD-stalled late coming-of-age story / coming-into-his-own story for Bruce Wayne / Batman respectively = 9/10; the only detriment from my point of view was the very straight plot / partly derivative story-line of "only" 7 / 10 for originality; yet the film has still a very high entertainment factor = 9.5 / 10 as throughout it all NEVER did I feel bored or dragged along, and only one iconic "heroic" scene felt a little over the top, breaking the otherwise rather gothic noir, yet down-to-earth mood. It's up there with "Batman Begins" & "Batman Returns" in terms of sheer artistry, consistent stylishness, suspenseful moodiness, acting performances, entertainment value and smart characterization.

Great music score-cinematography- direction synergy . I had goosebumps by seeing that the score was paying homage to the Darth Vader theme by Williams (who in turn lifted it from Gustav Holst’s Mars) while the entrance of Batman was shot at boots and cape level…

I believe many people cannot (or don't bother to) differentiate between a badly written and a badly acted role - or even between a movie or its protagonist they dislike and the actor playing the role. After watching Robert Pattinson in the sheer intimate madness that is "The Lighthouse", I knew right away that he had it in him to carry the Batman cape, and so much more. I have not seen "Twilight", but I would doubt that it is Pattinson's acting skills most people will find issues with if they dislike the film. And even if they do, I would still recommend to them to give both "The Batman" & "The Lighthouse" a chance and to approach them with as little prejudice as possible. This guy is a very versatile actor after all.

I saw it twice now and loved it even more the 2nd time. TDK had a trailer that was amazing and the film surpassed it, which is rare. The same can be said for The Batman. Pattinson totally carried the film with such minimal dialogue. His eyes told this story. I love how him and Gordon are in it together no matter what. The end where he lights the flare then leads the people out of the dark waters to safety was amazing. The closing narration with Nirvana reprise had me COMPLETELY in awe. I was 500% invested. The Alfred/Bruce dynamic was incredible while being a complete opposite of Nolan's which was also great. This was the Earth One Alfred where he was MI-6 British Intelligence and helped train Bruce and Thomas ran for Mayor before being slain (ordered by Penguin which could still be, since we don't know if Maroni or Falcone did it or if it was someone else or random )

The word ''Masterpiece'' is oftenly used these days by younger generation filmakers and critics too easy in my opinion. When you grow up in 00's and 10's when good cinema litterally died , if a half decent movie comes out, everyone is ready to crown it a Masterpiece. Todays movies are technically very good (visual porn) but luck any soul or real substance.

I can totally agree to your opinion! I've been a huge Batman fan ever since I watched the 90s animated series as a kid. Watching this movie in a theatre really blew my mind, it was all I hoped for and even a bit more. In my opinion the darkest incarnation of Batman we ever got on a big screen so far. But I can also totally understand why some people don't like it as much as I do. Next to me was a boy (around 12/13 ?) with his father, and he was bored and even moaned loudly in some scenes. I think it depends on what you expect from this movie. I hoped for a really dark and gritty, old fashioned and grounded Batman that still needs to learn things for his crime fighting career. The boy probably expected a more action oriented, high polished looking blockbuster movie. And this is definitely not what this movie stands for. Anyway, what I also wanted to tell you: Yes, please do more movie reviews. Maybe you could also make a video about "must see" movies and explain why you like them. Or maybe make a video about the movies that inspired you to do what you are doing?

Yes! Thank you! This movie was fantastic and was one of the best Batman movies! Some of the critics said that it was too different from the other Batman’s, that Batman was more of a detective. Well….yes! Why would they create a similar Batman to all of the other ones. I also loved the style of the movie as well. The dark tone and color of the movie, the characters, the score was some of the best from any Batman. The entire cast killed it. I also enjoyed how every character didn’t really feel like a parody of former super hero movie characters. Well okay maybe the penguin and the riddler felt closer to a parody, but in the best way possible. It still felt authentic. Also they’re the bad guys, their supposed to be a little absurd. My point is that every character mostly felt like they could exist in the real world. That gave me a sense of immersion in the movie. The alternative is usually ridiculous characters doing and saying ridiculous things, which can be fun, but it’s not always the best thing for the overall experience of a movie. Robert Pattinson was amazing! Some people complained that he was too similar when he was Bruce Wayne and Batman. That he is supposed to act like an eccentric billionaire as Bruce Wayne, instead of being sad and down all the time. Again, not every Batman will be the same. They took a new approach with this one and it really works. I feel like this movie has had mixed reviews. I get it, it’s Batman, there will always be plenty of different reviews, but this movie took a new and bold approach towards Batman. Bringing the detective side back, making it even darker, making it seem a bit more realistic, I absolutely loved it! I’m very excited for the next one!

*SPOILERS ALERT!* Just saw it yesterday! It's freaking good! Your review is top-notch, and I love the tiny detail you put *in this video, like* matching the color of the look and design. On to the movie, I remembered that feeling after stepping out of the theatre. I was just stunned there for minutes, with the score at - 04:00 - still ringing in my head non-stop. You know it's a beautiful movie when it leaves you with some lingering taste after watching it. I particularly can't get one scene out of my head, the scene where Penguin's car crashes the roadblock. The scoring beat just matches perfectly there, it's just so satisfying to hear. This movie is visually chaotic, fuzzy, but stunning at the same time. It's hard to describe but when I watch this, I feel the imperfection in the shot and it felt really good and complemented Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne really well. The movie is almost 3 hours long and I would say I enjoy 99% of it. There are only 2 scenes where I feel not great about - which is a *subjective opinion* , of course - 1. When Batman cuts the wired and falls into the flood. They make it looks so dramatic that I think Batman would hurt a lot, only to find a second later, Batman is 100% fine. I just wished they would hold the shot a couple seconds more before revealing Batman from the water. 2. That shot of Batman and Catwoman that looks like they have a nice chilling breezy afternoon motorcycle walk. Ahh.. It's just killing the moment for me But again, this movie is stunning in every aspect. Just like you said, just when we thought we can't have anything new, Matt Reaves just come and surprise you again with this. Note: I am not a native English speaker. So, hopefully it make sense :D

this film early on casts the idea of the city of Gotham hating the batman...he isn't seen as much as a hero throughout the film...he is feared by villains and the citizens of Gotham alike...which I think brought a very interesting side to the character of Batman...a darker more grim side. Definitely an epic comic book film...bought there is a lot to like from what Nolan brought to Batman. Both takes are epic in there own ways

In the year that followed, Michael Giacchino's "The Batman" main theme has likely become my most replayed score music ever 🔂. The jazzy "Catwoman" theme is gorgeous also. Apparently he decided to deliver in a way he's never done before, because his work on any of the other films doesn't even come close to how good The Batman score is.

Absolutely! All your points on character, story, Matt Reeves etc are dead on but I also do believe that in this film the Cinematography is the intensely standout element. I feel personally that once you've seen so many movies, are aware of the genres, all the storytelling devices & become aware that there are only so many archetypal stories to tell, the thing that's left to explore in the most nuanced and exciting ways are atmosphere and tone. Film being a visual medium of course. NOT style over substance, but films where the style and substance are so well married, where the look and feel of a thing is telling us the story on an elemental level. The Batman is the new standard, the high water mark for breathing new life into a genre space. Love all your videos on this movie as well as your Villeneuve stuff. The Fish. Lighting passion and exploration. Keep it up Patrick!

Batman lurking in the shadows and being engulfed in complete darkness was simply brilliant. Christopher Nolan gained some inspiration from Michael Mann’s Heat when making The Dark Knight, there were some elements of a crime drama. I loved Matt Reeves take on this film, it’s gothic like The Crow with elements of noir. The gritty cinematography felt like pages out of a comic panel.

Just found your channel through this video. I really agree with your assessment that this film is gonna change the cinematic landscape in the future; haven't seen anyone else make that point yet. I really hope we get more superhero films like this one, and just films in general. This feels like Reeves' magnum opus to me and I was honestly just blown away by how much of a masterpiece it was. Everyone was at the top of their game here and it really shows. Anyway, great video. Subbed!

4:42 I could't agree more. I've liked Hans Zimmer with some of his work (Gladiator, POTC etc. etc.) but with the second 2 dark knight movies, it was just the same beat over and over again and while (like you said) it worked in the film, listening to it was boring.

I love your thoughts about the film. I've watched it twice now. I also want to say how the Batman's character arc comes through in the film score as well. The tone of the scene in the final act for the Batman is so rich and beautiful. I, too, have been listening to the soundtrack since I watched the film and it works so well as a standalone - stimulating the visuals in my head for me. Even writing wise, tonally, it's consistent from the start to finish. Each character's decisions and agenda is consistent throughout and the performances elevate that so perfectly. I'm so glad Matt Reeves decided to do his take on the Caped Crusader. You can see his strengths from "Let Me In" and the Apes franchise clearly at work here. Please do another review of films from a cinematography perspective since that seems to be your strength. How about a compare/contrast with Dune and Batman since it's by the same DP??
@impatrickt2 жыл бұрын
Well said! I’ve been thinking about re-visiting Dune’s cinematography. I’d actually love to take another look at Let Me In - in a post The Batman world, the look of that film is actually quite a bit ahead of it’s time. I don’t think we fully appreciated it when it came out.

@@impatrickt Yeah!! I found out about "Let Me In" relatively late, a couple of years later when it released. I was blown away when I realised much later that Matt Reeves and Greig Fraser worked on it together. Looking forward to your video essays!

@@impatrickt visually I couldn't rate it highly enough, loved the art direction and the use of lighting - the tone was so consistent, and stylistic without feeling gimmicky or overdone. Had to look past a few corny moments of dialogue and a couple of odd choices in blocking/framing (literally only a couple) but other than that, gripped. Colin Farrel and Paul Dano were phenomenal!
@impatrickt2 жыл бұрын
@@KROMAprd interesting - which dialogue bugged you? I saw it again today. I only have one nitpick which is the editing of the final motorcycle scene. could have been 10s shorter.
@KROMAprd2 жыл бұрын
@@impatrickt It fell back on a few little tropes so for me if I feel like I can hear a character's line/response before it's uttered it just takes me out of the viewing experience momentarily. Riddler had no such issue tho, couldn't get enough of him, it was more the dialogue between Bruce & Selina
@impatrickt2 жыл бұрын
@@KROMAprd I saw a lot of that has the noire influence - they speak like theyre in Chinatown or The French Connection. its very self aware at times with the dialogue... almost like it should be black and white.

*Spoiler Alert* - I agree everything you said there except the most important flaw in the film - the plot. As the comparison to the previous the dark knight trilogy, this film cannot deliver the convincing factors on the villains and their actions, such as why they are supposed to be one of the important villains in the film or how smart they are, etc. Colin Farrell did the whole incredible transformation into Penguin but his character in this film doesn't really show how evil he really is, or how important of the role that stands out among the gangs beside his flawless makeover. His character is almost like one of the standing backgrounds; And the real MAIN villain, Riddler, Paul Dano did amazing performance EVEN only showing his face at the third act, but the whole so-called "smart evil plan" to the end game isn't really persuade enough to be as evil and smart as he claims to be. Each Riddle isn't really have a connection to each other beside catching some corrupted cops and people to confess and then die pretty visually or publicly. And so-called the "END GAME" isn't really evil enough to get everyone kill together beside just getting some water flooding into the city (unless the water can sink the whole island, then it will be different case). Compare to this films plot to the previous dark knight trilogy, the riddles are just pieces separately that don't really connect together with an explosive end game. It's not like the Dark Knight where Joker master plan from the beginning, where every moves he made are continuing the moves to the next, and it's not like an explosive endgame like the Dark Knight Rises where the villains are basically planning to nuke the Gotham City and die together. And the villains have their beliefs and motives to fulfill their master plan. And yes, this film also tried to pickup lots of the best elements from the classics into here and create something new. But it's also way too similar to the styles where its whole investigating flow is like Se7en, not showing the Riddler's face until the third act, and also getting himself caught in purpose, etc......but then still not smart enough but trusting his followers for finishing his work???! ( he should've watched dark knight again and listen to what Joker said ) and never having any escape plan like Joker did? or John Doe in Se7en where he got himself caught for finishing the last sin with the whole masterpiece??! I would say that it does take SOME of the best elements from the classic but he hasn't understand the core theme of these plans. I agree that this film is a brilliant work with all the visual aspects.....but masterpiece??!! I think it's debatable.

@@impatrickt glad you reply. I understand this is your channel, and I just randomly watched your video here.
