Okay for reference and to clear things up: Two years ago when Luffy was alone, the Strawhats knew he was hurting and needed their help. They were separated and worried sick about him and Ace; wanting nothing more than to be there. So when he's alone fighting Katakuri with no way for them to help him, he wanted nothing more than for them to know he was 100% okay. That's why he smiled like he did and put on the farce for them. Literally crying when typing this out. :(
