La Fière Bridge in Chef-du-Pont, Normandy, France, played a important role during World War II, especially in the Battle of Normandy. This bridge crosses the Merderet River and was a strategic point during the Allied invasion on D-Day, June 6, 1944.
La Fière Bridge was essential for the Allied advance, allowing the movement of vehicles and troops across the Merderet River, cutting off German forces, and protecting the established beachheads. The surrounding area, filled with swamps and flooded fields, made roads and bridges vital for military mobility.
Battle for La Fière Bridge
The battle for La Fière Bridge began in the early hours of D-Day when paratroopers from the US 82nd Airborne Division were dropped behind enemy lines. Their initial objective was to secure the bridge and its approaches, preventing German forces from reinforcing their defenses in the Utah Beach area.
The paratroopers faced intense resistance from well-entrenched German forces. The fighting in Chef-du-Pont and around La Fière Bridge was fierce and prolonged, with heavy casualties on both sides.
Despite the challenges and German resistance, American forces managed to secure the bridge and hold it against German counterattacks. Capturing and maintaining La Fière Bridge allowed the Allies to consolidate their positions in Normandy and continue their offensive against German forces, contributing to the liberation of France.
Legacy
Today, La Fière Bridge is a place of memory and tribute to the soldiers who fought and died there. Monuments and commemorative plaques honor the bravery of the paratroopers and the strategic importance of this battle in the Normandy campaign.

This was an extremely important battle! The 82nd Airborne fought for 3 days! General Gavin lead from the front!! If they had lost this battle, it could have disrupted the movement of troops coming off the beaches and delayed the invasion or even reversed it? A lot of troopers died keeping that bridge!! AIRBORNE!!🪂🪖🎖🫡🇺🇸

The 82nd Airborne showed incredible bravery in this battle and General Gavin's leadership from the front was inspiring. Their sacrifice to hold that bridge was immense. We owe so much to those who fought and died

My great uncle was on the second wave. He was the next in line about to get on the boat for the first wave and they said no that’s enough you’ll be in the next one. I wish I recorded some of his stories. I remember a few but my dad knew more.
