There's absolutely no reason they can't, and there usually is technically a primary for the President's party that's only countered with relative nobodies since it's essentially a non-thing in modern US politics to really fight the President from his party's own side. Trump could well trigger a real in-party revolt there if his numbers sink in the relevant demos for GOP victory.

Democrats are better than Republicans, to be sure, but let’s not forget that most Democrats are Third Way (Clintonite) neoliberal centrists with ties to Wall Street and Silicon Valley. The Democrats need to be pushed back to the New Deal progressive politics of FDR at the very least. I’d personally prefer to see the Democrats become a European-style left-wing party along the model set by Germany’s Die Linke, the UK’s Labour, Spain’s Podemos, or Greece’s SYRIZA.

Seth R. As a European, I wanted to say this: first, I do not think a more left-leaning strategy could work in the US. The Democrats are already being lambasted as "liberals". Mr. Sanders is addressed on this very forum as a "cockroach", by some insane creep but they are all over the place (the creeps). Just consider how any effort to install a more just and fair health system is being treated. Plus the left-wing parties in Europe are not doing well, at all, election-wise with the exception of Portugal. Siriza has to make multiple compromises. UK's Labour, despite a good electoral results, is being at odds with its flip-flopping position on Brexit. And it must be said, they gain traction in the electorate by making false promises. The others, I don't know anything about. And yes, Democrats may be being third-way and make entertain doubtful ties with Wall Street. BUt at least, they did and do try to reduce inequalities, to bring about a fairer social agenda, etc. And at least, however shady, they do have values. Complicated. Best regards.

Critical Thinker well they waited until they weren’t sure they could get re-elected so they aren’t risking much but at least someone in the gop is standing up for what’s right although I wouldn’t assume automatically that that is their motive.
