Sima Yi letting Cao Shuang's faction continue to push the war effort while he sat squeaky clean and hands-off from it was a brilliant way to use his isolated position in Wei state affairs to his advantage. It's almost comical how Cao Shuang's prior efforts came back to bite him as quickly as they did.

It never seems any less crazy to me just what a different level of scale warfare has been in the history of China. In Rome and Persia at this time, 30,000 troops would be a MASSIVE army, enough to pose an existential threat to any neighbour it attacked. Meanwhile in China, it's considered a garrison, and a relatively weak one at that.

there is actually an interesting internet meme going around China right now. In this meme, you go back in time and become a general in ancient China and the Emperor had just asked you to give up your command. You ask, how many men do I command, and the narrator tells you that you have 8,000 men. To which you reply, then of course I give up my command (because it is such a small and insignificant number). Then narrator says, what if it is 800,000. Then you put on your crown and cape and say it is time for a new Dynasty. Just goes to show you the scale.

During "Let's talk" for Northern expeditions, it was stated that most troops didn't even wear much armor, most of them were just low-quality infantry conscripts. Romans were professional soldiers who wore heavy armor, were highly disciplined and wore a lot of gear. So they may have been fewer, but infantry was of much higher quality. It's also stated at Guandu let's talk lore that that only 30/110k troops from Yuan Shao were fighting troops. So, in those 100k, they probably also included logistical troops and non combatants.

That was the case in the earlier periods when sides like to inflate numbers. Once we get to the later periods such as now, the troops counts are more accurate and armor ratio did improve. It is not to the point of the Roman army as China during this period did not adopt the professional army model for the most part but relied on cyclical conscriptions although arguably if you were conscripted, you often time travelled to far far away and basically stayed a soldier.

@@SeriousTrivia Rome was capable of fielding larger armies as well, as the Roman army defeated at Cannae was 70,000 strong. Still nowhere near the levels in China at the time, but Rome very much chose quality over quantity. It had to, since while Rome had somewhat of a population advantage over its neighbors, it wasn't enough to be a quality all on its own, like in China.

despite that big lost of wei somehow jiang wei still can't break through to chang an it's kinda sad if only jiang wei don't waste it rss to take the north west but mustering the troops and rss and jiang wan make the better administration and purge the eunuch like huang hao maybe the result will be a little bit different cause most officer of shu have loyalty like a cult at least no one try to coup the weak liu shan cause he is more usefull alive even as a puppet he have his father legitimacy who build this shu faction from scratch but no somehow huang hao still alive even went zhuge liang death and being executed at later stage by jiang wei when it's already to late if i remember from the series i watch in tv I remember jiang wei execute one eunuch in royal court when he asked to pull back like zhuge liang when they almost pass through the wei defense line

Are you going to talk more detail about Sima Shi's family in his own lore series? 2. What was the fate of Sima Shi and Xiahou Hui's oldest Daughter and in Advisors Alliance we watch her grew up to little girl to a teenager and she was last seen heart broken when she discover her mother was murder.

hey Serious Trivia, on the topic of Xiahou Hui's death, there are conflicting sources on her death, some say it was poison, some say she merely died from the plague, why do you think it would be more likely to be assassination than plague?

This mentioning in the Book of Jin is really odd. It is hard for me to make a judgment call on this but logically, I think the timing does not make sense as in 234, there was no need for him to kill her. But it is recorded in the Book of Jin so I can't really argue against it either (especially considering how the Book should be favoring the Sima clan in its portrayal).

Yes Wang Ping could not write or read. He knew maybe 10 characters but he had people who would write out his commands as he spoke and had someone read him books while he listened

Wang Ping is a native of Baxi in the Sichuan region. That area was quite underdeveloped and dominated by non-Han or Man culture, so literacy in Chinese characters was generally not that high there at the time of the late Han Dynasty. Another interesting tidbit about the non-Han people there was that Zhang Lu escaped into the Baxi region after leaving Hanzhong, and managed to bring back lots of them to the north with the help of Zhang He before Zhang Fei was able to capture them, as part of Cao Cao's migration plans. This was part of the many ways in which non-Han/Man diaspora took off in the late Han Dynasty.
