The fifth in a series exploring the locations associated with the Union attempts to take the stronghold of Vicksburg during the American Civil War. In this episode, we explore the crucial (but unexpected) Battle of Raymond, which opened the door for Grant's Army to take Mississippi's capital city of Jackson soon after.

As an American I was never really interested in the Civil war in school, I felt it got overshadowed by WW1/WW2 and Vietnam while learning about American history in school. Sometimes a student can only learn from a teacher who truly loves the curriculum they teach. And you definitely love this subject which is why I keep coming back for more. Keep up the good work.

Out of all the classes I looked forward to in school. History was my favorite. And you've brought that spark back when you upload a new video. Keep up the good work.

One additional comment, if I may. Seeing you in period attire and referring to the heat and humidity makes me remember my own experience in Raymond. In May of 1998, I was there for a very large reenactment, although portraying the other side based on my ancestors participation. On the second day, I was so caught up in the excitement of the battles that I failed to drink from my canteen as I should have and fell out with dehydration and heat exhaustion. I truly agree with you that those men were as tough as nails to endure what they did.

Really enjoy your channel! Well done, Sir! I was in those fields, in and out of the creek bed, Federal Infantry, the three days reenactment of The Battle of Fourteen Mile Creek May 3-6, 2002, 8,000 reenactors on the field. That reenactment executed all the maneuvers you describe in your video. Six years during the 140th anniversary years. Outside of family and the US Navy, one of the best experiences of my life. Love your channel!

I participated in the 135th anniversary reenactment of the Battle of Raymond as a private in the Union forces in 1998. Nowhere near as signed as it is now. We as the invading force got to march right through Raymond, with period-dressed civilians sullenly watching as we moved through town. One of my comrades-in-arms broke from the column and attempted to rob a woman of her basket of food she was carrying. She summarily beat him with a parasol until he was forced to retreat back to his position.

As bummed out as i am i couldn't be there the videos really do help bring perspective to these battlefields and sites you visit. When i was in JROTC in highschool i got to go to two different civil war events where we wore uniforms, killed and ate chickens and also had to march and watch over camp at night . one of them was done at the old Mormon Fort here in Vegas the other on a soccer field at my highschool in Utah. Also went to John .C Fremont Middle School in Vegas and always knew he was a explorer of the west as well as Senator of California and Governor of Arizona, but I never knew he also fought in the Civil War and also he ran against James Buchanan for President. Just wanted to share some history facts I've learned since moving back to Nevada. Keep up the good work 👍

This series of videos is extremely well done. The timeliness of them is very good for me as I and several friends, are flying to Vicksburg in about 10 days to study this campaign. I really appreciate the work you have done and the clear method chosen to explain each segment of the campaign.
