The Scottish war of Independence was a conflict fought between the kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland as Edward the 1st of England sought to subjugate the kingdom.
Edward is once again invading Scotland, but before he personally leads his army he sends another army to secure parts of Scotland under the command of Sir John Segrave.

I attended Roslin primary school back in the fifties. The place is awash with history, Roslin castle, (The 'Rose Line') Roslin Chapel, Wallace's cave, Jacobs ladder, (The Holy grail) The Apprentice's pillar. And the Battles. I used to collect birds eggs as a child, the best place for Jackdaw eggs was a cliff face on the river Esk near Roslin, called Mount Marle. As a kid this puzzled me as it was not a Mount but a cliff. It turns out that the third commander of the English force was 'Marle' As the last battle swung in favour of the Scots, The last commander was told: "Mount Marle, for the battle is lost." Nearby there is 'Killburn' one of the English camps, "Rotten Rigs" A burial plot for those who died. It never got much publicity because Robert le Brus murdered Comyn, and as we know; the victors write the history.

I live within a few miles of the battlefield and We recently visited the Wallace Cave that’s located in Roslin Glen country park, it’s rumoured that Wallace took shelter there after the battle and I actually believe that seeing as it’s perfectly hidden deep within the Glen. It’s a beautiful spot!

This is one of the best Scottish military achievements during this war. This battle should have been portrayed in Braveheart. Bravehearts William wallace though a bit Non-factual seems to be a mix of the real William Wallace and John Comyn.

2,000 deaths to 28,000 deaths feels very doubtfull, anchient history is rarely accurate when passed down so many years. I think you had it right in the speech box at the end of the video where King edward said it was hardly any of there own men. hence the outcome possibally many that were fighting for english turned against them in battle. it would defo make more sense of the numbers.

Always see Bruce and his army who may of even been enemies of this army as being the most successful as well as most motivated against being greater in favour of Independence . I wonder if the mercenaries in the English army where from the clans that fought for Bruce.

It's possible, but there are not many administrative accounts from the Scottish side but, from the English, there's plenty of records of payments to and from and the fact that after becoming King and winning Scottish independence, King Robert's administration would have played down any victory from his Scottish enemies.

Wrong English where only there to steal hence why they split up, We had no King English didn't even think there would be any oppositions or any fighting, John Comyn and some Nobles saw it coming and prepared. Numbers are correct. We totaly destroyed them, No prisoners taken Scots force was to small to guard and to fight....

@@stephenmudiecastles.2938 It's depends on what book though doesn't it. Propaganda isnt a new thing and it was in the interests of the Scots as well as the English to downplay the significance of the battle. Comyn was a hero but unfortunately he was also a deadly rival to Robert the Bruce who murdered him in cold blood in Dumfries. Scottish propaganda had to find away of explaining Bruce's actions and down playing the heroism of Comyn. The fact that the English army split into three clearly shows it was a sizable force. Also very unlikely the Scots outnumbered the English levies in the English infantry. I don't think they would have been trusted not to turn coat when the battle was going against them in fact if that was the case then its likely imho that's the reason the Scots won.

Sadly this video has been reading the fictional account of the battle written by Jackson of Penicuik. There is a much more realistic appraisal of the battle written in 2019 by the Scottish Battlefields Trust. Extensive research showed a much smaller series of running battles by mounted knights. Still very significant. The retelling of the over exaggerated tale has led historians to dismiss the battle altogether which is a shame. Truth may be less dramatic but it matters.

The numbers for this battle seem to be completely inaccurate.....I'd love to see facts behind these figures. This was a very good win for the Scots but I'd say the numbers would be more like 2,000 mounted light cavalry plus maybe 500 heavier cavalry against maybe 8,000 English [mainly Low Land Scots with around 30% mercenaries]. The English were split in 3 groups and the Scots defeated each element individually.... Any thoughts...

As the Curries song was sung by Ricky Fulton the splattered blood of our of our slaughtered sons. That's what happened on that day.

The story I know is there was a love triangle between Seagrave, Sinclair of Roslin and the Lady of Dalhousie. Seagrave requested an army and brought back 30,000 men from England. John Comyn rallied 9000 at Biggar. The English army split into 3 and sacked a castle in Gorebridge, Roslin and Dalhousie Castle. The Scottish never left Roslin Glen and used the high ground to rain arrows on the English as they passed through the Glen. One group at a time
