What has largely been left out here is the fact that the English heavy cavalry was trying to charge and fight on very boggy and marshy ground. With the weight of the armour carried by the horses and knights the cavalry could not not pick up sufficient speed in the charge, or maneuver once contact was made. Bruce chose his battle site well.
@xj900uk2 жыл бұрын
Blame Edward II for deciding to pitch his camp in a marshy/boggy area where it would be hard for his cavalry to deploy. A really stupid mistake as he made no use of his light cavalry to spy out the land in advance and discover what would be suitalbe for horse, and where Robert the Bruce had dug his pits and traps in advance. THe English looked to Edward II for firm decisive leadership in a tricky battle dspite their paper advantages - they needed Winston Churchill, but instead got Boris Johnson.

They were all too busy arguing about who should lead the charge(s) and never bothered to even reconnoitre as to whehter there was an easier and drier route to the English camp around and to behind via the trees. Oh no, I tell a lie - one French noble did send a few light cavalry to scout the area, and they reported it free of English and ideal for moving around and catching them from behind - but the noble then ignored their advice as apparently he felt that attacking the English from their undefended rear was 'cowardly'(!)

This leaves out the role of Angus Og Macdonald, Lord of the Isles, who rescued Robert Bruce in 1306, took him to Rathlin, and stood by him in his many battles. Macdonald also brought thousands of his Islesmen and galloglass to the Battle of Bannockburn. He fought at King Robert's side, and his men were in the last rush King Robert ordered, thus helping to secure the victory.
@jalanlengkok2 жыл бұрын
It's not clear that Angus Og was there at all; only Barbour makes the claim. It is very likely that he was deployed to the west coast to disrupt attempts to bring troops from Ireland. IIRC Professor Penman has written about this in some detail.
@reganwalker88582 жыл бұрын
@@jalanlengkok Angus Og was there with his thousands of Islesmen. Many historical accounts mention him and the longstanding friendship between Angus and the Bruce that led Angus Og to risk all for that friendship. Some even name Clan Donald's chiefs at the battle. I have Penman's book as well as 40 others. It's ok but not great. Many have the death of Angus Og wrong and some incorrectly say his older brother, Alexander Og, was a traitor to Bruce. History written by the jealous and those who lost. Why would King Robert reward Angus Og with all those isles and lands if he did not stand with him in battle? And why would he decree that the Macdonalds would forever have the honored right flank in battle?
@jalanlengkok2 жыл бұрын
@@reganwalker8858 There is only one account that puts Angus Og at Bannockburn and no contemporary account even mentions Clan Donald leaders at all. Given that the whole Scottish army might have been 7000 strong at most there clearly was not a force of thousands of Islesmen. Angus was killed in Action in Ireland. Dr. Penman is a great authority on this period and I think one would need to provide some very solid record/narrative evidence to contradict his analysis.

It's almost dumb luck since it's a defeat purely brought by arrogance infantry can't give chase to cavalry if instead of running head on they tried to encircle them while opening the front for archer fire and cohesive infantry advance on the front even if the english infantry were less disciplined they will contend enough for the cavalry pressure to be to much. In short normally 2:1 ratio with cavalry superiority means full on slaughter for same reason that infantry can't give chase to cavalry; they can't flee from cavalry it's why medieval armies are composed of lots of archers and cavalry gotta remember that archers also doubles up as simple infantry with an advantage of range threat.

Arguably the ancients didnt have the same technology - namely stirrups and specialised saddles that allowed massed heavy cavalry formations with some rare exceptions. The Normans made the knight king of the battlefield but Bannockburn, or the Battle of the Golden Spurs in Flanders before it was arguably the day that infantry began to regain its importance. The lessons the English learned in Scotland, particuarly the use of massed longbows, served them well against the French up to the end of the hundred years war.

Attacking from the flanks or rear would have been a smarter use of the English cavalry, but this was still in a time when armored mounted heavy knights with stirrups and couched lances ruled the battlefield and pike-wielding infantry were once again coming back into vogue (like Alexander the Great's Macedonian Greek army of old). The rise of pikemen with gunpowder slowly decreased the importance of such knights.

Eric Connor schiltrons operated 360 degrees
@Mitjitsu4 жыл бұрын
Cavalry were a central part to winning battles throughout that period, as you could use them to flank, break shield walls and encircle your enemy. However, this battle made cavalry very much obsolete. Giving rise to shiltron, which would then cause the English to focus more on archers and other forms of projectile attacks.
@jonsouth15453 жыл бұрын
The Schiltrons did not work for Wallace at Falkirk or Bruce jr at Neville's Cross during the invasion of England in what along with Flodden Field is arguably the greatest defeat in Scottish History as at Neville's Cross the Scots outnumbered the English 2-1 and were almost completely annihilated with the Scottish King captured and spending the rest of his life in an English jail in both occasions they were shot to pieces by Archers. Their success at Bannockburn is more to do with infighting amongst the English leadership and their inability to work together and come up with any form of coherent plan than the inherent strengths of the Scottish Infantry

well mostly what would have happened was not cycle charges into pikes but instead the cavalry would have attempted a charge, some would have tried going through it (and ended up dying) most would've just backed up and tried again. The main fighting force after the cavalry charge was the infantry as the cavalry continued to try to find openings. The issue again was a lack of openings and the fact the Scots continued advancing forward into marshy land which hurt the cavalries attempts more.

@LikeUntoBuddha5 жыл бұрын
Very very good. A must watch. Maybe the best breakdown of the battle I've seen. This video is a great example of what I've been seeing from several "KZbin" histrions. For so many years people doing TV shows, etc would just repeat the same "story". I'd talk to people and they would literally say lines out of a 'history" show. History..or the history we know from movies, etc is kept simple and I think most people believe that snippet of the battle is all there is. I remember reading about battles (Byzantines vs Arabs etc) that lastest for days and I was, what? It is like a 3-4 day chess game. This battle was not a simple one-day let's line up here one. Most people do not know it was over two days...But it needs an edit to make it perfect. I find the withdraw of forces very interesting. So it needs 20 seconds added to the end showing how and where the Engish retreated/ran away. I realize that often there is no evidence of this. Another great thing about a lot of (I have 364 KZbin subscriptions) these is also telling where they go the troops. How did they get there? How did they meet? This battle is a great example of what I call the "rock, paper, scissors" of battle. Which General does it better. Some are artist and some do not do it at all. And having "command" is important (duh). "Western" armies compared to "Eastern" armies had very little discipline. The breakdown of this battle should go like this. The English archers were sent over first with infantry supporting them. The English commander saw there was not enough room using this one bridge. Keeping enough Knights and having them run up and down a lot convinced the Scots that they were there and coming over but really most of them went over the bridge on the right out of sight of the defending Scottish. The archers and infantry sent back word about the pits dug for the horses. The Scottish pike formations were taking heavy fire and sent out their achers. The Welsh archers shirted fire to the new threat and with English infantry coming around the right side at them the Scottish bowmen retreated. With his Schiltrons taking damage, Bruce had to decide whether to attack or to try to fade into the woods. Seeing only English infantry coming over the bridge he realized that retreating would be difficult and decided to attack. He ordered 4 of the Schiltrons in the wood to take a position on his left and told them to prepare to move forward with his two as they had practiced. Hang on, I need another cup of coffee.

Thank you sir. Actually at first I thought that research for this would be simple and straightforward, but then when I got into it... man, I realized that this battle has enough details for a two-part video.

I sincerely hope you are wrong, the SNP want to throw away 300 years of history for no other reason than an ingrained hatred of the conservatives. This simply isn’t a good enough reason, and given what I’ve seen of the SNP and their supporters I doubt they fully understand the consequences of their actions. In fact most SNP voters I know are the most bitter, resentful and hateful people I have ever known and their true colours have really come to light since the independence and EU referendums. I remember working across Scotland during the 2014 Indyref and absolutely everywhere I went - Glasgow, Stirling, Fort William and even Edinburgh I saw Better Together posters vandalised, spray painted, torn down and laying on the road sides. In fact I don’t recall a single Yes campaign poster that was vandalised in this way. I even saw billboards in the fields that Yes voters had taken the time and effort to spray over and in one case set on fire. Funny that, brave Scotland wants to be an independent nation once again but within an intrusive European Union that doesn’t even like them or want them to be independent. See if there was a genuine and good reason for independence then these Yes voters would probably be able to hold up against the argument for it. But instead they resort to bitter anti conservatism, personal attacks, vandalism and violence. It doesn’t matter to them the Scottish deficit is the highest in Europe or that Scotland is more heavily subsidised than England or Wales. It doesn’t matter to them France, Spain and Belgium would veto their re-entry to the EU. It doesn’t matter to them the SNP can’t say what money the country will be using and be paid into their bank accounts at the end of every month. It doesn’t matter to them that all their NATO allies are also opposed to breaking the Union and nor does it matter to them them that NATO, an organisation they want to be a part of, uses nuclear deterrence as its primary method of security all the while demanding trident be scrapped. Yes the inconsistencies in what the SNP want are an eye opener indeed

@@D97mgtow 300 years of history will still be there, the bad and the good but that's like saying half the world should go back to being under the control of Rome because there was hundreds of years of history or that India should rejoin the British empire . But to be part of a right wing forever tory UK is not Scotland. We are an inclusive people, who rely on Europeans and immigrants to help create our society where the poorest have as much chance as the rich (free education and prescriptions) . Il not deny there was dirty tactics on both sides of the referendum but to say it was only the yes side is a falicy. Better together supporters were just as bad, countless yes posters defaced, especially after winning the vote *cough cough nazi salutes George Square surrounding the two girls ..... Its time that Scotland stands once again as a nation and not as a prisoner. The political landscape has shifted and its clear that its not working.
@D97mgtow5 жыл бұрын
Scott Morrison That’s not true, the vandalism and violence were almost exclusively committed by the Yes side. I was a logistics manager at the time and travelled the whole country in my work. I honestly did not see a single pro independence poster vandalised. The thing about politics is you need a balanced system in any independent country which means you need both a left and a right. You are obviously a leftist being SNP but you need to consider that an effective and powerful right wing political party would also develop in an independent Scotland. Most likely they would be who we have now, which are the conservatives. These are people who will uphold the same principles and policies as their parent party in Westminster so again I think many people on your side don’t consider this. It also seems that issues like the deficit, the EU, what currency we would use, NATO etc are completely irrelevant to the SNP. It’s almost as though the SNP want independence at any cost even if it sends the country spiralling into austerity, debt and turmoil. To this day I still can’t get a clear or consistent answer from Yes voters regarding any of these issues. Conversations just breakdown into aggression and insults then they stop speaking to you altogether. You think Scotland is a welcoming nation? I agree but so are England and Wales, England especially has been hit by immigration on a scale that people here in Scotland can barely imagine so if you don’t think Scotland will eventually run out of patience in the same way as England or indeed any other large European country then you are mistaken. Consider a city like Glasgow where people have been knocking lumps out one another over being catholic or Protestant, I can assure you if a city like Glasgow saw large scale immigration like Manchester, Leeds, Leicester or London then it would likely become one of the most racist places you have ever seen. Those 300 years of history include an empire, however questionable it is, we were happy to benefit from at the time. It includes an industrial revolution that saw us catapult to the most productive nation on earth. It saw us fight and win two world wars against all odds. It saw us play the most significant role on the continent in keeping communism out of Western Europe and much more. Again to throw this away based on nothing more than a dislike of the conservatives seems not to be a very intelligent or carefully thought. The inconsistencies I mentioned like wanting to be a part of an EU that doesn’t like Scotland or want it to be independent still haven’t been answered by any Yes voter I know. The EU sees Scotland as a Provence or a backwater, not really a country. Likewise the drive to rid us of trident all the while wanting to join NATO is a head scratcher too.

I watching from Azerbaijan. Thanks for all. I know Robert the Bruce, he was the greatest scottiah leader of all time and he still alive with Scotland. My history is rich. We have Babek, who fought against arabs for freedom, like Robert. And We have Shah Ismail Hatai. The Turkic Safevid Empire was created by the Ismail, and when Ismail created that country he was 14.

My 13 X Great Grandfather on my mother’s side hence my first and middle name, Robert Bruce. Proud to be related to this most noble of Scotts and drink a toast to him in peaty, smoky Inslay single malt every chance I get.

The actual mapping and animation of the tactics is particularly great. Informative, well narrated and just all around good stuff. Let’s see more.
