Late Modern History

Күн бұрын

In spring of 1836, the Texan Revolution was coming to a close. Even with heroic stands such as the Alamo, it seemed as though Santa Anna’s armies would crush the rebellion. This all changed when General Sam Houston led the Texians to victory at the Battle of San Jacinto.

Texian was used back in the day for a name for early Texas Settlers. It sounds strange compared to Texans, but it is a proper description for them back then.

The figures have World War 1 metal helmets. In reality some Texians have hats and some had shakes, tall caps similar to the American ones used in the War of 1812.
@LateModernHistory
@LateModernHistory 2 жыл бұрын
Those are actually just supposed to be wide brimmed hats. Seeing that the Texans didn't have actual uniforms and just wore their everyday clothes, I felt that best represented a common hat of the 1830's in Texas. That's the downside of using these simplified shapes: I can't always make it clear what some of these things are supposed to represent..

Cardboard has actually been around for quite some time. It really just refers to hardened paper. In this case it's not exactly cardboard as we would think of it today, but probably would have been closer to cardstock. In terms of using the name cardboard, I will admit this is slightly anachronistic. The first mention of cardboard by that name that I can find is from a book by Anne Brontë in 1848. By the 1850's, it was commonplace.

I've seen both numbers in reliable sources, so I would infer that we don't have an exact number. Usually with these types of things, it's just a discrepancy in who died from the battle itself and who died later from wounds from the battle. According to one contemporary account, there were only 3 deaths and 15 severely wounded. All that just to say, I don't know. Furthermore, I'm not sure if anyone does.

San Jacinto was NOT a battle but a MASSACRE, hence it s/be called, The San Jacinto Massacre for ever. Also, the Mexican army was NOT destroyed only its vanguard. Mexico STILL had close to 4,000 UNDEFEATED men in the fireld.
@LateModernHistory
@LateModernHistory 4 жыл бұрын
It is true, the Mexican Army still had thousands of men remaining, but the capture of Santa Anna gave the Texans the bargaining power they needed to negotiate the end of the war. Also, I would hesitate to call it a massacre. A massacre suggests brutality on the winning side. While I'm sure there was some brutality by the Texans, they treated the Mexicans nowhere near as bad as they were treated at massacres like Goliad. I would just call it a landslide victory for the Texans.
@SKY-jv9ue
@SKY-jv9ue 4 жыл бұрын
@@LateModernHistory Santa Anna was only a bargaining chip because Gen. Filisola (second-in-command) obeyed a captured commanders orders. Any other army would have said "tuff" he's a soldier liable to be capture like all soldiers are! Then they would have marched forward to capture Houston. Your view of massacre is strange, yet, you and thousands others called the Battle of the Alamo, a massacre, and they fought back! At the San Jacinto Massacre, the Mexicans were routed and massacred, as Houston's aide told Ramon Caro (Santa Anna's aide), "...our soldiers (the Anglo-Texans) in the heat of battle massacred them." It was an accidental landslide...like trump getting elected by the electoral votes, not by the people!
