Following Hashiba Hideyoshi's victory at Yamazaki, a period of tension will arise to the east, known as the "Tensho-Jingo Conflict" - while back to the west, the remaining Oda loyalists meet in what will be remembered as the Kiyosu conference to decided the fate of the clan. It is here a feud will begin between Hideyoshi and Shibata Katsuie that will eventually erupt into the battle of Shizugatake.

Shibata Katsuie, must have respect, although started out sour with Nobunaga but got a second chance in life, he become loyal to the bitter end to Nobunaga that he dare to go against the man who supposedly avenged Nobunaga because he think the Oda clan will be usurped by the same man who avenged his former lord.

Shibata was right all along, Hideyoshi really usurped Oda clan, ironically same thing happened after his death. It is interesting how Hideyoshi inspired his name "Hashiba" from Shibata and how they became enemies. Tensho-Jingo Conflict is another interesting story. How Sanada Masayuki change sides so many times, the last Samurai Warriors game Spirit of Sanada explored that really well, I suprised so much seeing all the betreyals. And funny thing is Sanada Masayuki actually praised for his political manuvers. After learning more about this era I understand why he get so much praise. He just played according to the rules of era. Everybody is untrustworthy backstabber in that era, Sanada Masayuki just played well that is all.

It was for the survival of his clan which most likely would be destroyed so I dont really see it as betrayal as well.

He was clever actually. Sanada clan was so small that siding with the wrong clan could cost them their survival. Masayuki was originally a Takeda vassal. After Nagashino and Tenmokuzan, seeing their masters being crushed by Oda, Masayuki was probably afraid of his clan suffering the same fate. For a small clan like the Sanada to actually survive not only Sengoku Era but Edo era as well, it's a real feat. Bigger clans didn't survive Sengoku Era.

I think the backstabber story of Masayuki had been a bit exaggerated by a lot of modern Japanese pop culture. The only daimyo Masayuki had really backstabbed was Hojo Ujinao (by changing side to Tokugawa), and probably Takigawa Kazumasu (by attacking Numata castle, although the Takigawa army was already retreating out of Kozuke and Kazumasu probably cared next to nothing about Numata castle). When the Takigawa lost and left Kozuke, most kokujins had to submit to either Hojo or Uesugi and submitting to Hojo was a pretty common choice (given the Hojo's strength), which was hardly a betrayal. On the other hand, leaving the Tokugawa and submitting under the Uesugi was due to Ieyasu trying to give his land to the Hojo (Ieyasu did not promise an appropriate compensation, which agitated Masayuki), which is more than reasonable. While Masayuki definitely wasn't the most loyal kokujin (regional small lords), he was probably very typical of the Sengoku kokujins (similar thing happened with Uesugi Kagetora's Kanto conquest, which saw kokujins of Kozuke and Musashi switching sides depending on who's got the bigger sticks).

The cause of Shibata's defeat in the Battle of Shizugatake was the desertion of Toshiie Maeda and his father and son Toshinaga! ?? Let's examine whether it is historical or not from primary sources, secondary sources, and military records. "Shibata Battle Record"
・Established immediately after the battle of Shizugatake . The authors are Yuko Omura (written by Hideyoshi)
and Katsutoyo Shibata fell to Hideyoshi because Katsutoyo hated the arrogant Sakuma Morimasa .
・ We praise the success and male appearance of Morimasa who attacked the fort of the Hashiba army.
-Regarding the surprise attack operation, it is not described as the cause of the Shibata army's defeat. There is a description that Hideyoshi was pleased with the appearance of the Shibata army, but he is enthusiastic about fighting openly.
・ The Shibata army was upset when he learned of Hideyoshi's return, but the general general, Katsuie Shibata, was a good person, so the soldiers fought desperately, and both the Shibata army and the Hashiba army were killed in action.
"Taikoki"
・ Established in the early Edo period. The author
also describes in detail the battle of Hokuriku, where the Maeda clan played an active role, unrelated to Hoan Oze (a vassal of the Maeda clan) and Hideyoshi. Thanks to that, Morimasa's success in the Arayama battle is well depicted.
・ The reason why Katsutoyo Shibata fell to Hideyoshi is that Katsuie Shibata was a problematic person in addition to that of "Shibata Battle Record". However, he also criticizes Katsutoyo Shibata, who surrendered.
・ As a background of the surprise attack operation, it is necessary to take measures to rescue Nobutaka Oda , and Masakuni Yamaji proposes the surprise attack operation to Morimasa. Morimasa agreed and advised the Shibata Katsuie, who ordered him to withdraw as soon as he had a good result. After seizing Mt. Oiwa and Mt. Iwasaki, Morimasa did not raise it even if Katsuie urged him. Meanwhile, Hideyoshi returned to Omi.
-However , it is described in detail that both the surprise attack unit and Katsumasa Shibata 's army fought hard in the withdrawal battle .
・Morimasa tried to challenge the Hashiba army to the decisive battle, relying on the fact that Toshiie Maeda was in charge of Shigeyama, but the troops behind the northern nations escaped after seeing the large army of Hashiba gathering one after another. .. The Hashiba army made a total attack there and won.
- Hashiba army "if pulling up in accordance with the instructions of Katsuie like, did not become such a thing. Veterans not lost in the defeat, ~ ~ to be despised upward biased" remarks MoriMasashi that captive
-MoriMasashi is When he was executed, he was decapitated without changing his complexion.
In "Taikoki", Morimasa's pride led to his defeat, but his success in the withdrawal battle and the troops that fled in front of the enemy are also described.
Regarding the fact that there was a desertion, I will list the descriptions of historical materials that seem to have been established at the same time as "Taikoki".
"Kanbei Watanabe"
・ The surprise attack unit is in a good fight in the withdrawal battle.
・ Katsumasa Shibata's army was shot by the Hashiba army and many were injured. However, there were about 2,000 enemy troops at the height of the ridge road, so the winning government stopped there (relying on a friendly army).
・ The two armies were glaring at each other at about two o'clock, but suddenly Shibata was upset and collapsed, so the Hashiba army pursued and won.
・ The surprise attack operation is not described as the cause of the Shibata army's defeat.
・ The activity of Kanbei Watanabe is also described in "Taikoki", and it is possible that "Kanbei Watanabe" was established earlier and Hoan Oze referred to it, or that he interviewed Kanbei Watanabe. ..
"Ichiyanagi Family Record"
・ Hideyoshi returned to Omi overnight. The Hashiba army attacks Oiwayama around 3:00 am the next day.
・ Morimasa had already begun to withdraw, but it took until around 4 am because he was a large army. The withdrawal of the surprise attack unit was quick.
・ The Northern Army (surprise unit or victorious force) shoots arrows like rain and stops the Hashiba army. Morimasa gathered the armies of the generals, waited for the army to serve as the lord's army, turned back and withdrew while repeatedly fighting the Hashiba army. It was a tough battle for the Hashiba army.
・ Soon, the Sheng government (winning government?) Was defeated, and a terrible pursuit battle was fought with enemies and allies.
・ Morimasa housed the defeated troops and gathered 15,000 troops to camp on the highest mountain in the area, showing the stance of a decisive battle.
・ The Hashiba army's vanguard unit was injured and was tired, so they took a rest. Meanwhile, Hideyoshi arrived with the Hatamoto unit. The Hashiba army became a large army with the arrival of the following.
・ The decisive battle began, and the Hashiba army first launched an attack, but the Hashiba army suffered many casualties due to the shooting of the bow and gun of the Northern Army.
・ When Todo Takatora 's forces fought a gun battle with the Northern Army, and (the Northern Army and the Hashiba Army) were engaged in a close battle for a while, the Northern Army was defeated due to some change in the position of Morimasa.
-The incident is either a horse rampage that surprised the generals' army, a fight, or a rebel.
・ The Hashiba army took advantage of the victory and pursued it. The Northern Army routed, but many turned back and were killed in action.
"Kangshu Yogosho Battle Memorandum" -The
good fighting behavior of the surprise attack unit and the winning government in the withdrawal war is almost the same as other historical materials.
・ Morimasa also assumed that he would withdraw in advance, and had a unit on the retreat. Therefore, the withdrawal went well.
・ However, the troops in the rear (placed to support the withdrawal) escaped and were defeated.
"Sakuma Gunki"
-Hideyoshi saw the position of the Shibata army and decided to try to defend the war.
・ Katsuie Shibata ordered Sakuma Morimasa to return as soon as he attacked Nakagawa's fort.
・ After occupying Mt. Oiwa, Morimasa stayed there to attack Hidenaga Hashiba 's team.
・ When Katsumasa Shibata's army fought against the Hashiba army, some fled to the Hokuriku region. After seeing the situation, Katsuie Shibata instructed Morimasa to prevent his allies from escaping.
・ Toshiie Maeda moved with the army and told Katsumasa Shibata, "Your army has struggled, so my army will change." But Katsumasa Shibata refused. Maeda Toshiie and Katsumasa Shibata's soldiers quarreled.
・ It is described that when a person named Shichiemon Sakuma tried to prevent the escape of soldiers, it caused a turmoil. Conclusion Although there are differences in the appearance of the battle in each historical source, it can be seen that the defeat of the surprise attack unit began with the self-destruction before the Hashiba army's total attack, which was caused by the upset and confusion caused by the escape of the friendly army. ..
As a post-war fact,
Hideyoshi added two counties in northern Kaga to the Maeda clan.
Considering this, it can be inferred that the unit that escaped was the army of Toshiie Maeda.
And due to this departure from the front, the surprise attack unit and the Shibata army were defeated. Nagachika Kanamori, who had just left the battlefield, did not add 100,000 stones.
If it was another army that fled, Hoan Oze, a vassal of the Maeda clan, would not have written it confusingly in Taikoki, or would have clearly stated the name of the warlord who led the fleeing unit.
In this way, the statements that "Katsuie Shibata instructed Morimasa to withdraw early" and "the pride of Morimasa led to defeat" become suspicious.
However, there may have been conflicts between the Maeda clan and the author Hoan Oze at the time of reading "Taikoki."
This is because the description in "Taikoki" is enough to suspect Maeda.
The great ancestors who laid the foundation for the prosperity of Kaga Hyakumangoku and the second generation's blemishes cannot be noted. The cause of the defeat is owed to Sakuma Morimasa, but Morimasa's success is also described. I want the reader to guess.
The head of the Maeda family at that time was Toshitsune Maeda, the third generation, and his father and brother, who were the parties concerned, were deceased and could not ask for their opinions.
In addition, the battle of Shizugatake was an internal conflict among the Oda family, and at the time of the battle, the behavior of Maeda's father and son was not particularly blamed by the world, and since the Edo period, it has become a problem due to changes in values, and each historical material is It is possible that the description was ambiguous.
In the battle of Shizugatake, until Hideyoshi returned after a successful surprise attack, that is, when the Shibata army was dominant, no warlord returned to the Shibata army other than Yamaji.
Therefore, it is confirmed that the cause of the defeat was the desertion of Toshiie Maeda and Toshinaga's father and son.

After all it is! ・ Although Hideyoshi's army was not in Omi the day before, he killed the army of Kiyohide Nakagawa, who was a big supporter. ・ In Mino, Hideyoshi's all-out attack was canceled, so Nobutaka Oda of Gifu and his army are still alive. ・ If the surprise attack unit is not damaged, the main march between Mino and Omi will be wasted. ・ The Hashiba army suffered damage due to the counterattack. ・ A surprise attack unit is waiting to hold a high place first. It was Hideyoshi's "escape of the rear troops" that overturned the predicament of Hideyoshi's army and brought victory, because it was a move that made possible the situation that resulted from Hideyoshi's reluctance to pursue and devoured the surprise attack troops! The battle of Mt. ) Was superior. ”“ The stupid Shizugatake army fell into the clever trap of the Hashiba brothers. ” Hideyoshi himself headed for the containment of Nobutaka Oda, and after the great return of Mino, he continued to annihilate the Shibata lord's army from the pursuit of the mountains, and also abused his own army and his own body with the fierce invasion of Echizen and the inheritance of Nobunaga Oda. masu from Hideyoshi I took捥technique victory to demonstrate the Takeshi Masaru pretend that exceeds the demon Genba and demon Shibata. On the other hand, Sakuma Morimasa's surprise attack unit was well united in advance, such as repelling the pursuit of Hideyoshi's army and showing the stance of the decisive battle even in a difficult withdrawal battle, rather than "the proud Ino warriors were made into Hideyoshi's army of God speed". It was a good fight to show that he was preparing for the event carefully. Hideyoshi's army returns → After a while, the surprise attack unit begins to withdraw → Hideyoshi's army starts pursuing → The surprise attack unit fights well → The surprise attack unit rescues Masaru Shibata, the surprise attack unit sets up → The decisive battle with the Hashiba army When it starts, Shibata's allies escape and the turmoil spreads → The surprise attack unit is defeated by the attack of Hideyoshi's army The battle is settled several hours after the dawn of the next day, and the long time from Hideyoshi's return to the decision of victory or defeat is the time when the surprise attack unit was very active.

Hm, there's been new developments in research since, but a lot of them are still up in the air. I fully understand not wanting to bring them up because it would cause confusion instead. Plus the majority of the vid is about Shizugatake, so these details may not matter so much overall. It just changes some perspective on what's going on, but not the battle's facts. The argument for Sanboshi was not just because Nobutada was the heir. Despite Nobunaga still holding the de facto power, he has formally relinquished the status of "Oda clan head" to Nobutada in 1575. That's why Sanboushi was proposed, because the succession line goes from Nobutada, not Nobunaga. There's been discussion that somehow, despite the Kiyosu conference, the new Oda clan head ended up being Nobukatsu. It's still kind of vague, and I had not been able to find much details on this. Still. Lastly, apparently a letter has been found, showing that it was actually Hideyoshi who arranged Shibata's marriage to Oichi, not Nobutaka as it had been previously thought. The situation here is also unclear.

One of the big mysteries of the battle is the movement of the Maeda. Basically he withdrew from the battle as Hideyoshi`s troops went into battle against the Sakuma and when news of that filtered out to other units it destroyed morale. Supposedly Katsuie`s forces pretty much disappeared and in retreat he had to go through Maeda territory and Maeda treated him very cordially (though this might be self serving PR for both Maeda and Hideyoshi).... Sakuma clearly should have retreated and Niwa Nagahide had his 2000 man force reinforce Shizugatake at just the right time... Also it does feel like a trap that was fairly well laid (Hidenaga did have 15,000 troops ready for counterattack, so it was not like Hideyoshi did not realize the ability of Shibata to launch a competent attack
@harrymills2770
@harrymills2770 3 жыл бұрын
One historian said - maybe it was just for drama - that the first Sakuma knew he was in trouble was when he saw Hideyoshi samurai coming up the road. Surely a competent war leader would have scouts and skirmishers monitoring all approaches for miles, with a plan for getting word back to the main force. Even good generals have to make some decisions under uncertainty, but it's always surprising when you see cases where they don't do what they CAN to reduce the uncertainty. Given the situation, there was no excuse for being trapped, there, and no excuse for not preparing for the counter-attack. It didn't have to be another Battle of Alesia for him to take measures to delay the relief forces, and extract his own forces. Where the fighting was fiercest along the ridge, they could've prepared some nasty surprises with a relatively small rear guard. Distilling Tsun Tzu into one idea, it would be "Don't leave to chance what could be known with a little due diligence."

@@harrymills2770 The problem for Sakuma was he was already deep in Hideyoshi`s territory and it was woody/hilly terrain probably making scouring hard. Nice video! Hideyoshi made the best use of logistics at this Battle of Shizugatake and won. He may be the monarch who used logistics most skillfully in the Warring States period.

It’s interesting just how many of the Seven Spears would go on to make a name in the Korean campaign (Kiyomasa especially). In Korea Wakizaka Yasuharu is the best known of the Seven Spears alongside Kiyomasa: the former because he lost horrifically to Yi Sun-Sin at the Battle of Hansando (though Yi’s main opponent at sea was Todo Takatora, who he defeated three times) and the latter because of all the insane and brutal stuff he got up to in Korea.

honestly Hideyoshi is as much a traitor as Mitsuhide, Mitsuhide might have killed Nobunaga and his heir but Mitsuhide killed the Oda clan, he stole their power and put himself in power. Nobunaga gave him everything he had and he repayed it by stealing and destroying everything Nobunaga had spent his life building.

Why did Hideyoshi choose to allow Nobutaka to remain in Gifu the first time? That just seems like an unnecessary risk given the multiple other threats from the Shibata faction.

Sakuma was 1 disobedient bastard. I imagine that Shibata would have tried executing Sakuma if they had met again after that battle. Maybe Sakuma also had secret ambitions to eventually challenge Shibata to a duel anyway at some point (believing he could defeat his own uncle). All in all, Sakuma proved a terribly poor example of military leadership in disobeying his uncle, Shibata. I also imagine that a Shibata victory in this battle would have also somehow prevented Japan’s 7 year invasion of Korea.
