Battle of Sekigahara 1600 - Sengoku Jidai DOCUMENTARY

In the second half of the XV century, Japan entered a long period of crisis called the Sengoku Jidai or the Age of the Warring States. Ashikaga Shogunate lost its authority and the clan leaders - daimyos divided the islands into 400 small feudal holdings. Three military leaders - Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu started their struggle to consolidate Japan in the XVI century and it all culminated at the battle of Sekigahara fought in 1600 between alliances led by Tokugawa Ieyasu and Ishida Mitsunari. The battle decided the next 250 years of the Japanese history

Interesting anecdote: because Mori was so severely punished (its territory reduced and its home base confiscated, forced to move to the west most part of Honshu), every generation of the head of Mori clan used to, on New Year’s Day morning, ask his subjects, “Can Tokugawa be quashed yet?” And the subjects would reply, “Not yet.” ... Not sure if it’s actually true, but it’s almost poetic justice for the Mori that they played a pivotal part in Meiji Restoration.

FYI “Jidai,” meaning a time period, can also be used to describe the period movie genre, called “Jidaigeki” (which were often samurai films). As George Lucas was a fan of these films, it is believed that the word “Jidai” was the inspiration for the term “Jedi” in the Star Wars films.

Excellent video! Love the channel. Though I must critique one aspect. As a story-teller and documentarian, I believe the "why" things happen are more important than the "what". By that I mean, the 'betrayals' and 'withdrawals' you mentioned were historically accurate. But the reasons behind them were absolute gems. So I'm surprised you didn't even mention the why of the story - that's truly the best part. Kikkawa owed a 'blood debt' to Ieyasu that he could not betray, which is why he split. Shimazu withdrew because the vassal that came as a messenger requesting that his attack commence did not bother to leave his horse, which the Daimyo he addressed was appalled at. So simply by being so insulted resulted in him not attacking either, and Ieyasu becoming Shogun. Amazing.

Minor(not unimportant) mistake in this episode, Toyotomi, known as Hashiba when he served Oda, was not his ally but his most trusted lieutenant who was promoted from a mere servant. Hideyoshi lived a legendary samurai life and succeeded Oda but he was never Oda’s ally. Tokugawa is Oda’s ally since Tokugawa becomes independent.

Great video and I was hyped when I saw it in the KZbin recommended section. However, there are quite a few historical inaccuracies probably due to the lack of translated resources as I imagine. Hideyoshi was a retainer of Nobunaga, not his ally. His position was much lower than both Ieyasu, who was an independent daimyo, and other Oda retainers who also fought for power after Nobunaga's death like Katsuie and Kazumazu. There aren't a lot of reliable resources as history tend to get changed by the winner, and most resources we have today are either written in the Edo period (roughly 200 years later), with its main purpose to glorify or vilify someone in the past. But we still have some letters showing that Mori Terumoto was the commander of the Western army, with Ukita Hideie as the vice commander. Mitsunari had very little land, and lacked the necessary political might to rally daimyos to join the Western army. The plan of the Western army was also to fight Ieyasu at the Mino province, which failed when the Eastern army stormed and took it down within a week. About the Shimazu's refusal of attack, it was circulated by historians that the event was after Kobayakawa's betrayal. Judging by Shimazu's active involvement in the Western army early on, they had no reason in not taking part in the battle when the Western army had the advantage (before Kobayakawa's betrayal). The Shimazu, more specifically, Shimazu Yoshihiro, also only had 1,000 men due to his conflict with his brother, who ordered that no men shall follow Yoshihiro except a mere 1,000 bodyguard to Osaka. The popular story of Shimazu joining the Western army because Yoshihiro was refused to be let into the Fushimi castle was most likely created as an excuse of the Shimazu's involvement with the Western army. The supposedly person who refused him, Torii Mototada, was dead by the time the story was spreaded, making it impossible to prove the validity of it. The refusal of the Kikkawa forces to attack wasn't just due to Kikkawa Hiroie's personal betrayal, but rather Mori Terumoto's indecisiveness in who he should support. By the time, he was already the commander of the Western army and knew it's impossible to say that he didn't participate. However, he allowed Kikkawa to negotiate with Ieyasu to make sure that Mori clan would profit from either outcome of the battle. The army also only left the battlefield after Mitsunari and Ukita's forces routed. Sorry for the inconsistency of the names (Mitsunari is a given name while Ukita is a family name), thought that might make the whole gibble gabble easier to read. Love your video btw!

You've made a rather large mistake, by the time of Hideyoshi's death, Tokugawa had already uprooted his power base from Imagawa to the Tokaido provinces formerly held by the Late Hojo clan. This was actually the result of Toyotomi attempting to defang Tokugawa by forcing him to rebuild his power base in a foreign land by offering him a massive amount of wealthy territory, instead it backfired and Tokugawa's superior administration resulted in the land becoming much more profitable and his power base growing even quicker than expected.

Great video! I'd only like to add that Toyotomi Hideyoshi was a subordinate of Oda Nobunaga, not his ally. Also, just like Hideyoshi, Nobunaga could never become Shogun due to his family's lineage. (Hideyoshi even tried to make the Shogun adopt him haha)

The book "Shōgun" by James Clavell is a really good one on this time period. Great read for anyone interested in the Tokugawa rise to power, with a novelistic approach. Read that one as a kid, really cool to see this time period done in this fashion!

Maybe you guys can consider starting a “what if?” series? Like in this battle, Mitsunari had a lot of cards in his favor but due to betrayals and officers refusing to listen to his commands he didn’t stand a chance. What would have happened had things gone as planned? Would the warring states period lasted longer? Since you guys put so much effort in your research, you could provide the most likely answers, that would be so interesting! Great video btw, love your content and keep up the amazing work!

Because without China Ming, Korea would be taken by Japan. When Korea's territories including capital city all fell to Japan's hand, except 1 territory, Korean King ran to China and beg emperor China to help them. Emperor China even shocked with how fast Korea territories got taken by Japan. Japan took Korea's capital city only in 1 month! Actually have you guys played the game shogun? Also did you know that the reason why samurai never developed the heavy armor of European knights was due to the fact that japan had not bred the huge horses of Europe.

I think there's a mistake about Shimazu Yoshihiro's position. He was on the left side, near Mitsunari's position, behind Konishi's army. That's why they're famous for their legendary withdrawal after the battle. And also, I can't find Ukita Hideie's army, which was way bigger than Otani's.

I had two conflicting sources on that, and decided to go with the one that said he was on the right. That is why the battle starts with "we don't know where the initial attack happened."

There are more than that. Ukita Hideie has the largest force in the western army, and his army was the first to engage in battles with Fukushima's army. On your map I don't see any of these happening.
