What happened afterwards is also worthy of mentioning. Prisoners were now slaves and some others were used as sacrifices. Later legions would come across the ambush site and find remnants of their fallen comrades along with scattered equipment the tribes didn't take. It said they buried the ones they could find in a mass grave.

When entering the Teutoburg forest the bulk of the roman army thinned out and with some 15,000 - 20.000 soldiers and civilians advancing through the unfavorable terrain it was stretched out over several kilometers. So when the middle was attacked the front and the back probably wouldn´t even notice. And the germanic warriors had already disappeared in the woods again before reinforcements arrived. The roman cavalry (accused by the historian V. Paterculus of cowardice) tried a breakthrough to the Rhine but ran into a trap that Arminius had setup and was completely wiped out. The psychlogical element probably played a role in this battle, too. The superstitious Romans feared dark forrests and when reported thunderstorms started, it was seen by them as a bad omen. The Germanics on the other hand most likely believed that Thor, god of weather and thunder showed them his support in this way.
@mattgopack7395

I think this video definitely underplays the tactics of the germanic warriors - it was quite a trap that was set up, and not just a horde that won through sheer numbers.

The aftermath of Teutoburg is fascinating as well. The Roman’s didn’t simply leave Germania alone. They launched a retaliatory campaign, and rained destruction upon tribes that were responsible for Teutoburg. Rome had a reputation to uphold, and couldn’t afford to take that defeat sitting down. As for Arminius himself, he was killed in a power struggle against other Germanic warlords.

It wasn't enough. Rome had gotten soft. Had Rome, in the aftermath, gone all "Julius Ceasar-like" on the Germanians, killing a million of them, and enslaving million more (a quote from Julius Ceasar's conquest of Gaul), the world would have been a very very different place. Would there have been anyone left to cross the Rhine in 406 A.D.?

What a moronic drivel. Tiberius did nothing and was still praised to the skies only for propaganda. No battles, no torched villages, nothing at all. There is no evidence for the apparently suppressed mutiny by Germanicus, nor that he apparently destroyed everything within a 75 km radius. Germanicus won exactly one battle against the Marsians, against a single tribe. Although he was able to take prisoner Tusnelda, he got his ass kicked by the Teutons in all further battles and had massive losses. And what always happens when battles are lost, which could also be seen in the 3rd Reich, the army leaders and generals are showered with medals and awards and praised beyond all measure. And then they are praised away and transferred. Except for a few ridiculous recovered legionary eagles, he accomplished nothing. Finally, all efforts on the right bank of the Rhine were abandoned because the losses were too high and no progress was made. In the dumbest case, Germanicus bought the eagles and did not even get them back by conquering them. Roman reports are one thing above all. Propaganda and pure Bullshit. Normally, the winner writes the history. Unfortunately, the Teutons carved their runes only in beech wood, which has not survived 2 millennia.

I don't know why he made such a big deal out of it, 3 legions is only 15,000 soldiers. The roman empire at the time could regenerate such a force in a very short period of time. Weren't there like 40 legions across the whole empire ?
@french907
@french907 Жыл бұрын
@@ahmedibrahim9082 It wasn't that simple Take the Illyrian rebellion as an example The romans had to mobilize 6 out of the 9 legions to crush the rebellion. This left an opening for Arminius to destroy the tree remaining legions. This would be a constant source of problems down the line The empire simply didn't have enough troops to manage the several thousands of kilometers between the Rhine and Danube rivers. Furthermore it wasn't simply the destruction of the legions It was also twenty years of pacification and attempted assimilation, urbanisation that went down the window.

I wondered why Augustus appointed a pen pusher to lead his legions in Germany. But it makes sense that if they considered the area mostly pacified after a decade or so then an administrator was better suited for the job. Though I don't know why there could not have been one figure to act as governor and administrator and another to act as experienced military commander. I also wonder how things would have turned out of it was Julius Caesar leading the three legions when Arminius came to him with news of an uprising.
@Simpson17866

Probably not much better :( Julius Caesar was a genius who valued patience and information-gathering to a degree non of his contemporaries could match, but Arminius had a 10-year head start on developing a battle-plan.
