Finally found something about these things. I have an 83' Laney Pro Tube (Pre AOR) 6 knob with the original 4x12 Cab with Fane Speakers. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Except a MK7 Mesa or EVH 5150iii 😂

I absolutely love this amp. I have an '86, 6 Knob, made about a month after I was born I think. People always big these amps up for Doom, but I bought one because Criss Oliva from Savatage used them, and they sound super tight boosted with either an eq and/or an OD up front! I think the bass knob volume jump is more apparent at low volumes, mine is more of an insane spike in low-end, rather than overall jump in volume, but it kind of eases off the more you crank the amp. I just bought a Toneking Ironman II from Thomann, so I can't wait to hear what it sounds like cracked up! Apparently the schematics in the original 6-knob version with the vertical inputs and metal corners are almost identical to a JCM800, I have no idea if that's the case with these plastic corner models, but I've read that the output valves break up a lot earlier than the old Marshalls👍

Ive had the 30, a 6 kno with plastic corners and an 8 knob. All were very cool. Wish i could try a vertical version. Also have yoh tried two sd1s on the aor clean channel for oliva tones

@@TheDistortionPrinciple Yeah same, vertical input model is super hard to come by. I have 1 SD-1, but I also have an MXR Wylde Overdrive which is almost identical to the SD-1. So I tried using both of them in front of the clean channel, and It just wasn't doing it for me, just wasn't a nice tone at all, I'm not sure if it was because I haven't been able to crank the amp, but I was possibly using too much gain, I'll try again when I use the attenuator and see how it sounds.

​​​​@@DomicidalCoversI know you tried replicating Criss's tone that way but that's not what he actually used. Yes, he had a Laney endorsement but it's kinda the same deal as with his Jackson/Charvel endorsment. He had Jackson/charvels but his main guitar was still an ESP. Look at every single picture of him playing live and you'll see two JCM800 full stacks. Not Laney's. Also substitue some gain with compression. You'll get closer to his tone.

I have a six knobber that I will never sell. Does everything I want it to do. People that don't know what they are talking about call it the poor man's 800, when it is not at all. It has it's own thing going on, it is "darker" sounding than a Marshall, so it is better suited to certain types of music. Mine is the fifty watter.

I sold all mine. Got a 50 watt combo that i guess had the best component tolerances of all mine cause it aounds so damn good. I can set it very close to an 800 but like you set it goes beyond that and massive low end and dark vibes

I've got the 6 knob 50 watt and wouldn't get rid of it for anything. Definitely not a poor man's 800; totally different beast.

Dude...I hit the front with a Catalinbread Naga Viper and an EQD Hizitumitas fuzz and it's absolutely brutal. But it does more than that, as you know. Clean and bluesy isn't bad at all. If they came out now they'd sell a lot better.@@TheDistortionPrinciple

The 8 knob sounded better in your examples imho PEOPLE JUST DON'T KNOW HOW TO DIAL IN TONE WITH THEIR EARS ... AMATEUR'S USE THEIR EYES AND NOT THEIR EARS. FORGET THAT EVERYTHING NEEDS DIMED! FIND SWEET SPOTS USING TONE AND VOLUME KNOBS ON THE GUITAR FOR WIDE PALETTE OF TONES ALSO....

If you have an EQ pedal, try it in the loop. Works well for me even on my Series 1 🤘🏻

In my experience, the 6 knob is better for pedals, but the 8 knob is better for amp gain. Both are killer

I tend to agree. I preferred boosting the 6 knob when i had these amps

I’ve had 6 knobber for about 9-10 years. Fantastic alternative to an 800. I pretty much leave it set to gain at 6 and MV at 4 and if I need more I use a pedal. Every 8 knobber I tried got too mushy or fizzy on the gain.

Id say the aor has more gain if you can crank a la30bl the gain amounts closer. The architect is closer to the 8 Knob

I think 6 knob sounds better for slightly less gainy sounds. Makes me think of Sabbath’s first album and Electric Wizard’s first album. Nice and groany, no chainsaw

I have a RedBear MK120, I love it but it doesn’t have as much gain I’d like, and WAY too much bass, even a 0. Want to trade it for a Pro Tube 8 knob.

I feel like the six knob is a better fit for me. Too many knobs intimidate me. (Remember a lot of those old Peaveys? Too many knobs! Lol) But the six knob sounds a bit better to my ears in terms of clarity. Awesome to see a shootout of these! Thanks for doing that! Cheers!

Haha yea alot of old peaveys will have you knob turning for days. The 6 knob is my favorite as well
