That's... Actually fascinating. I thought the replays were stored like a video of the battle, not a replay of all the orders. It makes sense for memory I guess, but like... Why tho.

Yeah it can be a bit problematic at times. The first time I noticed it was a clutch victory I saved in Rome II, which I lost in the replay because some units got stuck out of formation after failing to walk through some dead elephants.

I remember this being a thing since atleast Rome 1. I tried to watch some replays, but my game was modded and the replays werent so it was an interesting clusterfuck that ended up being played.

It happened a lot on WH1 with replays literally showing armies that just sat there for the entire duration of the replay and then suddenly a victory or defeat screen as it had somehow ended due to the timer running up.

If it was a video, you couldn't watch the battle in every angle you want. It's a quirk of the engine that sometimes files can get corrupted by the way they're made, but it's how you can manage to look over the entire battle at your leisure afterwards.

I remember first noticing this with a Norscan save I had, where I ambushed another Norscan army and Wulfrik's boat turned a close victory into a crushing one. The replay completely derped out and ended in a defeat out of nowhere. Never trusted that replay system since.

I have literally had Shogun 2 replays where it seems to even forget the orders. There was one battle which I took a screenshot of the results (Heroic victory: my 897 vs enemy Kamachi 2209. I suffer 135 casualties, they suffer 2052). I distinctly remember how the battle went: I was attacked from two sides so I deliberately targeted the incoming enemy reinforcements first and routed them, then approached the enemy with my ashigaru slowly whilst sneaking my warrior monks around through the forest to ambush the enemy (who were mostly low morale units). Result was a total victory. So when I rewatch the battle only to see my general Leeroy Jenkins himself straight into Yari spears and die 40 seconds into the battle, I begin to suspect that Total War's replays aren't as accurate as I suspected...

@@Yrridian You could technically press and hold alt and right-click to designate an area for bombardment with artillery. Before you ask, you can set it anywhere as long as it is within range, even on top of your own troops. *FRIENDLY FIRE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED*

If you are good in micro, you can dodge the corps with your cav or even with your spearmen in a long line on one side and than you remove the unit quickly.. so than you have only 20 % damage ... But is a play with fire

I remember a game I played in Atilla, The Last Roman campaign, where I basically fought my version of the battle of Ad Decimum. It was a stack and a half of Vandal troops against my stack of middling infantry and a few cav units with some archers. There was a nice rock formation with 3 tall rocks around a tiny area with the only way in small spaces between the rocks. So I used it to turtle up. Probably not the best idea considering I had sword infantry but since I was outnumbered I had to do something different. I did win and saved the replay, but the replay completely ignored the rock formation entirely. It still had a victory, but the army was in such tatters that if that was the real outcome I wouldn’t have been able to do hardly anything else except encamp and stay there for like 5 or 6 turns

Had similar thing happen in Stellaris multiplayer, after many desyncs with my mate. We essentially began playing in parallel universes, where he'd have a revolt on a planet and lose it, but to me it would still be under his control etc. Kinda matched the whole SCI FI aspect though in the end.

So Cylostra allied with Tyrion for a contract at Lothern opera it seems I would have deployed the archers on the left 5 meters far away from the spearmen so that when the bats would have come down on the spearmen they could continue shooting without interruption

I also had a really frustrating replay anomaly. I was Chaos with Archaon vs Vampire Counts Mannfred. Manfred with 2 units of Varghystes, 2 (I dont remember the name) terror ghiste? the Single entity bats, and Mannfred on a zombie dragon ganked on Archaon. Wich is what i wanted. I separated him from 2 chosen halbers i had cause i had a master plan. So they swoop in thinking they got me but that activated my trap card. An overcasted piercing bolts hitting them all. 1 Varghyste goes down the other is 20% hp, 1 Terror ghiste 30% the other 80% (unlucky) and Mannfred wich ended up at 40%. Then i had 4 units of horsemasters shooting at Mannfred and so taht was the end of the VC. And the replay was nearly all the same but for some reason Archaon didnt move, was inside 1 chosen halberd. Mannfred 1 Varghyste and 1 Terror jumped only at Archaon. Then the piercing bolts where casted on an empty space (where originally was that fight) and 20 seconds later of melee the game gave me a victory. And as i was saying it is frustrating cause i wanted to share that moment.

I used to have a replay from total war medieval 2 that was really bugged, for each time I would play it, the outcome would always be different. I don't know why it happened, nor could I say at what moment things decided to bug out, but it was fun to see troops be confused and doing thing super dumb thing because orders seem to mess up constantly.

yeah broken replays is a huge issue, i can never relive those glorious days, but i think the game has some kind of bias against the player on replays, as i have had replays that where wrong but we still won but the game thinks its deafeat, and also some where i would have won had the battle continued but because the replay has a set timer, if you dont win and the timer ends then you must have obviously lost
