At for-profit colleges, all students are welcomed-and so is your financial aid.

Correction: We mistakenly highlighted Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis at 4:20 in the video as a for-profit university. Colorado Technical University, one above IUPUI in the list, is the for-profit institution we meant to highlight.
The best (and also free!) place to explore repayment options for federal student loans is: studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans
There's also the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. If you're employed by a government or certain type of nonprofit the program forgives the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full-time. studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-lo...
Qualifications for student loan discharge: studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-lo...
Getting out of default: studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-lo...
Higher education is expensive, so people want to get the best deal- a high quality college education at a low cost. This is similar in the way which many for-profit colleges and universities advertised themselves. Many students soon found that the cost of upward mobility through certain for-profit institutions wasn't the answer for them.
These schools saw a huge jump in enrollment during the 2000s. Fueled by a struggling economy and the expansion of federal financial aid for college, many students saw the advertisements of for-profit schools as attainable and affordable. But almost two decade later, there are new regulations to reign in the predatory schools profiting off student debt. And today, over a dozen for-profit colleges in the US (ITT Tech, Corinthian Colleges, Sanford Brown, and others) have closed their doors for good.

Yinksy93 true but I did went to community college and didn't graduate at all because( lack of tutor resources, ran out of money for sail mae etc)and it's not because I didn't try enough I did I studied my ass off 7 yrs ago but didn't went back because of terrible resources and cheaper is good but don't expect the best help in the school. the only good out this situation is not having debt at all and so I could transfer to other schools if there willing to accept my low GPA which was cause due stress and a nasty teacher.

This is the exact reason I ditched The Art Institute of Seattle. It's predatory. When an instructor asked why we were there, every single person said, "They got back to me first." This was a week into the class, and I started doing research and came to the conclusion that I'd be worse off with a degree and $80,000 than if I cut my losses before accruing debt. I'm so glad I did. Also, my web design class was a joke. The entire curriculum was using a free website to learn how to code for web design. So stupid.

I went to a private not-for-profit school, and in my second year there it went for-profit. I immediately saw an drop in quality in the professors I had, and in the student services like counseling and library services. Only 1 year after they went for-profit, my entire department of professors had quit or been fired, and all the incoming professors were teaching for the first time and were only adjunct and part-time professors. Tuition was more than 12k a semester, and that's without housing, and with a full campus they couldn't even afford to consistently hire professors full time or with teaching accreditation. I've been to a state college, a community college, a private-non-profit-turned-private-for-profit, and I'll be transferring my credits to a private non-profit, and I can say from experience that the American school system is only slightly better than its health care system. Thank Reagan and Clinton for that.

They claimed excellent job placement. One time I asked an instructor working in one of these for profit schools (TCI Technical Career Institutes), and he said that technically, once someone graduates from his school, and the graduate is arranged to work at McDonald's flipping burgers, technically that is Job Placement. By the way, TCI is no more. Good thing.

@TheGeneralJos
@TheGeneralJos 7 жыл бұрын
ApexPulsar Well, not necessarily. In the everyday vocabulary it is, but the naming convention is very strict. For example, community colleges strictly offer only two-year associate and transferable degrees. Those transferable degrees are transferred to the universities. However, within the campus, you will find buildings designated to the fields of education, usually for the higher level of education, e.g. College of Law, College of Medicine, etc. It is a distinction I wish we Americans would make.

some people just need to realize that you shouldn't go to college if you don't have a chance at getting a well paying job. There is a stigma today that you have to go to college to be successful. "People" (many of whom are 16 or 17 years old when they start applying) have been told over and over again by teachers, their parents, politicians, and other influential people that college is the only way to success. It's one of the most pervasive cultural myths out there, and it continues to be spread by people who are products of a different era when college WAS a key to success, or who just want to take advantage of how good it sounds to preach about education (i.e. politicians). I don't think the "smart" thing is really true, either. The #1 most helpful thing is having family with connections who can get your food in the door somewhere (which usually means coming from a wealthy background). Trump is actually a prime example of this. I know plenty of people who are smart with college degrees, but they can't get a professional job because all entry-level jobs require 3-5 years of experience on top of a college degree, and the they go to someone's nephew half the time anyway.
@airman6937
@airman6937 7 жыл бұрын
Amphitrite I agree with your first paragraph completely. As for the second, yes it definitely does help to have connections, but you can make buy without them. If you work hard and are an intelligent person who can communicate well, that is better than having connections. So many people toda go to college to study something stupid like gender studies then cry when they have debt. College is an investment, and you need to treat it like one and weigh the risks vs reward.

the system is pretty basic, you have a public university which is free to anyone, and yes, it's flooded with people from border countries and then there's the private university which is a little bit better but in most carreers it isn't justified the cost (huge). The public one has the first year in which people get tested to see their level, if they pass they can get into the university if not they can't, the test is really easy so most of them pass, the problem is the first year of college, most people drop out because either it's too dificult or they don't like the career, so in the second year the people that are smart or like the career get to go through

These colleges can exist because there's this wrong belief in the US that everyone needs to go to college with these grand promises that it will pay off for everyone in the long run. The fact of the matter is not everyone is cut out for higher education. We're too afraid to tell people this though. After all, you can't say something that will upset someone else. Let's not crush their dreams. Let them continue go 30-60k more in debt every year for the next 6 years or so.

Yale, Harvard, Stanford and other Ivy League schools are for profit as well, The only difference is that their job placement record is better. Incidentally, in her biography, Sandra Day O'Conner describes how she couldn't find a job in her field for two years after graduating with a degree from Stanford. Back then, she just kept plugging away, paying her dues on a road that eventually lead to the "Supreme Court. Nowadays, she would have used her legal training to sue Stanford for giving her a worthless degree and taking her money under false pretenses.

Fate Kyougo Some for-profit colleges are extremely deceptive. There are some that are regionally accredited and are "Non-profit" on paper. However, in practice they operate like a for-profit and have little to no accrediting bodies associated with their programs. On the surface they appear to be a completely legit private school. Bellevue University is a prime example of this. I've known plenty of people who graduted from there totally unaware that their degrees have no real accreditation beyond regional.

I would knock out my core courses at some university and then transfer to the city university. (Both are non profit and share the same system). But I heard from others that I didn't really need to go to traditional schools and if I was really passionate about learning how to compose, I could go straight to schools that can just give me what I need. I was listening to Pandora and i heard about Full Sail University. I was amazed to find this school so I called them and asked about their program. It was all too good to be true. I live in Texas and I asked about their main campus and they told me that there was a location in Florida? They told me that I was supposed to do a four year degree plan filled with many music theory classes and I was going to have live video chat lessons when I was going to submit my recordings and homework assignments online and right off the bat I just knew I was better off going to a physical school instead of an online school. Of material wise I needed a bunch of software and they were going to provide me a first year package with a brand-new MacBook Pro, a microphone to record, and some really cool beats headphones. They never told me the price and I just kept on thinking that I was going to receive all of this almost for free in a way. Until I finally asked about the tuition cost and the package that they were going to send me and I was floored about the price. It was a more than, $20,000.00?. Everything was super expensive and I just was shocked. how was I supposed to get all that money?! but I was just getting carried away and I hung up and I kept on receiving frequent emails ever since. They wanted to hear more about me and they would be delighted to have me as a student and such. I then realized those schools really are not as good as traditional college. I respect the fact that it can be for people that just have too much in their plate, but today I am studying for management information systems at a college of business at my university and the school really helps you out with the online courses and do give flexible schedules, well, in my experience.

Even as a 15 year old kid when these schools were around I knew they were a scam I don't understand how older people get fooled so easily. Community college is essentially free if you are a low income student, heck at the university I'm going I don't have to pay a dime according to the package I qualify for.

Quick question would you prefer to study in public or private schools (if private, for-profit or non-profit schools). I personally feel that if you can afford it, private schools are the better choice in developing countries, but i am curious about the opinion of those studying in developed countries which are already well known for a good public school system.

I live in Canada and they even have sites where the make it look like there website shows schools all around North America but when I sent an email about a music corse in Toronto they ended up Calling me and just saying that it was their Toronto office and that the school was in the USA and when I said I wasn't interested they didn't give up and would call text and email me non stop to the point where I had to block them completely to get them to stop.

I like to think the reason enrollment in university is so expensive is because you can go to basically all the lectures you want. Just walk into random ones. Learn how to start a business. learn how to diagnose lupus. learn how fast a liquid has to flow to be considered laminar

Did anyone else have all these for profit colleges send over salesmen to their high school senior year to give the sales pitch speech in one of your periods? I remember during my hs senior year in 2013 I had all these for profit spokes people trying to influence people into joining and so called "get started on your future"; schools like, devery, art institute, and everest gave speeches at my classes. HA and they were really persuasive to. I even attended one of their campus tours in 2014, but luckily I found out about this for profit scam and managed to avoid this bullet. If this is what the public grade school system here in the U.S is willing to let in their doors to scam kids, this speaks whole volumes on how our public education system is more in it for indoctrination, and could care less about your future. Disgraceful.

This explains why I've been seeing so many more commercials for colleges like Grand Canyon University. Those ITT Tech commercials with the interviews of alumni have gone away in the past few years though. Or maybe that's because I don't watch tv anymore and the GCU commercials are on KZbin.

This video could be improved by explaining the dynamic between for-profit college tuition and it's source of revenue (i.e., the government's FAFSA dollars, in cash form, are received at enrollment/beginning of term independent of attendance. Rather than spending the cash to find and retain the student originally enrolled, the cash received, remember, dollars are fungible, is spent on marketing to find other students who still might have the opportunity to succeed in school. ) Unfortunately, the cycle is usually repeated.

I went to one, and I think I kind of lucked out. They were pretty aggressive with recruiting, and I think others that went to traditional schools got a more thorough education. My school was very focused on making us employable and preparing us for how to get and stay hired. I got a job in my field before I even graduated because my instructor knew people in the field, and I can pick up what I would have learned at a traditional school as I go. My goal was to get a career, and I got what I paid for.

Our government is obviously not going to be any help on this for at least four years. High schools need to step up and inform their students about these predatory colleges and the different options they have for higher education or work opportunities. A single career day and an aptitude test isn't going to cut it anymore because our kids are going out there completely uninformed and vulnerable. A comprehensive college and career readiness course should be mandatory for all high school juniors and seniors.

you should've put a research how this for profit colleges attempt to recruit outside the US. Once I went to an US education fair and the Academy of Art recruiters were extremely aggressive. Just a 5 minutes talk I got a 50 pages of book, 4 brochures, 2 registration form, and dozens of (personal) emails. Sadly, the prospective student was not aware about the for-profit scam and the regulations.
