Here is an overview of the BBB Method of pool care that is promoted widely on the swimming pool forums online.
Here are the three forums:

I wrote a Blog article detailing Swimming Pool forums which you can read here:
poolmandave.blo...
Basically the BBB method is using Bleach, Baking Soda and Borax to maintain your swimming pool -with Muriatic Acid to lower the pH.
Clorox Bleach:
Basically Clorox bleach is the same as liquid chlorine but a little weaker. Both are Sodium Hypochlorate but in different percentages. I have a video that detail this:
Using Clorox Bleach in Your Swimming Pool: • Using Clorox Bleach in...
Baking Soda:
I know Arm & Hammer is running a popular KZbin video in which they claim you can use it to raise you pH - that is true and also not so true. It is used widely in the pool industry (I buy 50 lb bags) to raise Alkalinity mainly and not used to raise pH. In fact you will need a lot of this to raise the pH which is probably why they want you to use it to raise your pH ;)
So the Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) actually will raise the Alkalinity without raising the pH much at all. It is sold in pool stores as Alkalinity Up - with a huge mark up over a box of Baking Soda.
Borax:
Must of us in the pool industry have been using Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate) but there has been a push in the last year or so to get us to use Borax (usually sold in liquid form with various product names). It is a very effective way to raise your pH safely. Youy can royally screw up your chemistry if you add too much Soda Ash to your pool. It is much harder to mess up with Borax as the Alkalinity level effects it's potency. If the alkalinity is high (100-120+) you will need to add more Borax to effect the pH. If it is lower than 100 then you will need less Borax.
I go into more detail in my Blog article about the BBB method: poolmandave.blo...

This is by far the very best video here on YT for learning and understanding the correct levels you need to maintain as well as how to correct each level if high or low. I’m aware this was posted way back in 2014 which in fact says a lot about how much you know your stuff and even more you know how to explain it all, which has been my problem understanding what products to use to raise or lower certain levels of each when off. Thank you, thank you very much I greatly appreciate it. I will definitely be saving your video for quick reference while I’m learning.

I was using all the dedicated pool chemicals and the floating chemical dispenser with tablets every year. It was very costly going to Leslie's. Now that I learn pool chemistry and want to simplify and save money, I said I was going to do the BBB method for this year. I have leftover pool chemicals from last year, namely Cyanuratic acid that I use. The only thing I needed from a specialized pool store in mutaric acid. Very useful in lowering the pH in hose water I put in my Intex blowup pool.

Excellent advice. I'm currently using the BBB method and I'm perfectly balanced. The only deviation is that I'm using a Hayward Chlorinator and chlorine pucks for daily chlorination (8 hours of filtration and low chlorination per night). I don't have a Taylor Kit, but my HTH test strips seem to be pretty accurate. Everything is in the "OK" range.

Thats where I bought the muratic acid from. Surprisingly, it costed only $16 to buy a carton with 2 bottles of the muriatic acid. Leslie's does have free pool water tests. But then when the results come up on paper, it gives you suggestions to buy THEIR specific chemicals for your specific pool problem. Leslie's chemicals are often quite expensive. A great strategy to rip off your customers. Go figure.

I've been using this method for 3 years. It's a simple concept and you don't have to worry about how tablets will affect CYA and PH but it's very unforgiving and you need to check levels almost everyday. When you have work, kids and a household to run - this method may not be the best choice. I also don't see the cost advantage. I use about 3 bottles of bleach a week, more during summer months so that's roughly $9 per week. I also use liquid conditioner every month to month and a half. Trichlor tablets are cheaper to use, you don't need conditioner and don't have to monitor everyday. I'm by no means any expert in maintaining pools but I do see some fanatical BBB pool owners be over critical of any other method. I just ordered the PoolRx, I'm sure the Houston weather will put it to the test.

Their sure are BBB fanatics out there and they will frown on you using PoolRx. However, in my testing if the water is balanced the PoolRX does extend the life of the chlorine in the pool - quite a bit. So you will differently see a reduction in your chlorine use.

1 suggestion: check your local pool stores and see if they sell liquid chlorine in 2.5 or 5gal carboys. It might be cheaper than store-bought bleach per unit of chlorine, and you won't be sending a lot of plastic bottles to the landfill.

Added 18 boxes of Borax and 5.5 gallons MA to my pool per the pool calculator today. PH is pretty close May need to fine tune a bit over the next couple of days as water settles into balance. I did it in 3 batches with brushing in between to help stir pool. The Borax was broadcast directly into pool, it dissolves nicely with only minor clouding. Within a couple hours of pump running the pool cleared up and water glistens like never before. The water has a real beautiful clear gleaming look like never before. Time will tell if the other benefits turn out true. Thanks for the videos

Just did mine today also. I found some at Target - the hardest part is finding enough boxes. I added 12 boxes to my 16,000 pool and 3 1/2 gallons of acid. Poured mine through the skimmer. Set pool to run for 24 hours. Just tested the pH and it is about 7.4 - 7.6 hard to see exactly with florescent light. Maybe 3 gallons of acid would have been enough. Gonna check the Borate levels tomorrow. Shooting for 50 ppm. I filmed it too ;). Started with Alkalinity at 80 and pH at 7.4. If the numbers hold up I think I hit it right on the dot. Sounds like you have a fairly large pool. I think the benefits are true.

@robwasnj

Nice video but I think a lot of people might still get confused. Also, I thought the proper way to do this was first adjust your alkalinity using baking soda, next adjust your pH using soda ash or acid, then and only then add both the borax and muriatic acid in a 2:1 ratio (for example 12 oz of borax to 6 oz of muriatic acid) until your borate level is around 50ppm. Of course you'll also need a borate test kit or strips to check it and get it right. The benefit is in having borates in the water which should inhibit algae growth, and give the water a better feel. Pretty sure there's a product out there that has sodium tetraborate pentahydrate and the necessary acid to make it pH neutral, proteam supreme? I have never used borax to adjust pH.

Nowadays, bleach manufacturers have gone back to 6% strength (they still call it concentrated but it's no longer concentrated). They have left the volume at the lower 116 oz containers, so you're getting less chlorine for your money than the days of 8.25% or the days of full gallon containers. If you choose to use bleach, you can use cheaper store brands such as Great Value or DG, but not use off brands like Sun. Use bleach that puts the concentration level on the label and the date of manufacture. Nowadays, you can often find 10% liquid chlorine in full gallon containers for the same price as 116 oz's at 6%. I've done a cost comparison, and if I buy Kik brand, one-gallon liquid chlorine from Ollies Bargain Outlet for $2.99, it costs me about 24 cents per oz of pure chemical compared to 43 cents buying the cheapest bleach I can find that's also strength verified. If you choose bleach, make sure to get plain, regular bleach; not low splash or scented.

I purchased a 1,000 gallon Intex pool, filled it up and let it sit for a week before I found this method. Just yesterday I tested the pool (the kit I bought tests pH, Bromine and chlorine) - all levels were at the very lowest point. So, I added 3 cups of bleach, 2 cups of baking soda and 1 cup of borax and I let the filter run overnight (8-10 hours) . Does this seem right? I read so many posts about it and it seemed to be the suggested ratio...I have yet to test the water again though will do so later. Additionally I would like to know the Bromine part of the tester...what am I looking for here? There is no mention of alkalinity on the tester..do I need to buy another one for this? As for the chlorine, I do have a floating tablet dispenser that holds 1" tabs - can I use this if I ever leave for an extended period to make sure the chlorine levels stay up or should I stick strictly to bleach? here is the tester I bought - www.amazon.com/2-Way-Testing-Chlorine-Bromine-SplashTech/dp/B01BVSNL0A/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1470065330&sr=8-2&keywords=ph+chlorine+bromine+tester

@SPL
@SPL 10 жыл бұрын
I would just pour the Borax through the skimmer one box at a time slowly. I think that is the quickest way to circulate the Borax. I've poured Baking Soda and Soda Ash into a skimmer and never had an issue. In fact I think you have a greater cance of clogging up your pipes with D.E. than Borax. Then adjust the pH after adding the Borax. I think one guy did it in stages - added 3-4 boxes of borax then acid. Waited a day and added another 3-4 boxes. I think I will have to add Borax to my pool and film it to see what works best. I am thinking that adding 10-12 boxes and adjusting the pH down in one shot is possible if done correctly. Having the pH really high for a short period of time (one or two days) probably won't be an issue. I think the ratio from one source was for every 60 oz of Borax add 30 oz of 31% acid. I wouldn't mix the acid in a bucket just because I don't think it is necessary. Let me know how it goes. You've done your research so you should be fine.

I wouldn't say it never dissipates but the level can go down with splash out (swimming) backwashing of the filter and when you add fresh water you are diluting the CYA in the pool.

Wondering if you have a kit at home to check the readings yourself. I suggest a Taylor 2006 test kit. Sometimes the readings at the pool store can be off. Sample water should be tested right away - as it sits the numbers are not accurate. So by the time you took the water out and drove to the store the water chemistry could be off. Testing the water right away at the pool side is best.

I don't understand Ph measures acidity and alkalinity so if your Ph is high it is alkaline and if it is low it is acidic so why would you need both borax and baking soda?
@SPL
@SPL 7 жыл бұрын
Borax raises primarily the pH. Sometimes the Alkalinity is fine and the pH is low so you would use Borax. When the Alkalinity is low Baking Soda is the most effective way to raise TA although it will also raise the pH up -but not nearly as much as Borax will.
@DaveBaldwin1

pH measures the acidity/alkaline levels. You can't adjust one without affecting the other. That's like saying I want to make it hot without increasing the temperature.

Dave B ok again, you state the baking soda raises the Alkalinity and the borax raises the pH right? meaning BOTH raise alkalinity because a higher ph is a more alkaline pH so affinity my question is if both raise the alkalinity and therefore the pH why do you need both baking soda and borax?
@DaveBaldwin1
@DaveBaldwin1 7 жыл бұрын
Leana Foss Leana, not exactly sure. Not much of a pool guy. I have read that borax does help inhibit algae growth, possibly the reason? The point of my reply is because I've heard so many people talking about raising the alkaline level without raising the pH which makes no sense considering that pH is an indicator on how acidic/alkolotic something is.

@SPL
@SPL 5 жыл бұрын
Cyanuric Acid is an acid, but it is primarily used to protect the Chlorine from the Sun's UV rays. You would only add it once at the beginning of the season if needed. Your CYA level should be between 30-80 ppm. So test your CYA and see what level it is at. If it is below 30 ppm you will need to add some. Confusing, I know. Cyanuric Acid is better known as Conditioner or Stabilizer to lessen confusion.

Let me clarify. I take my water into the local Leslie's store and have it tested. The results are printed out in a Water Analysis Report. If adjustments are required, the report reflects how much of a product is required along with the procedure. I.e Add to deep and of pool and wait 24 hours until next step...and so on. The salesman grabs the product from the proper shelves and gladly accepts payment. Cyanuric Acid -10 Total Alkalinity-60 pH-8 Phosphates-300 Thanks for your responses thus far.

You do need to add some conditioner. I would say one gallon of the Instant Pool Conditioner would be enough for your size pool, maybe 2 gallons at the most. Your ALK is a little low. I suggest a 10 lb bag of Baking Soda from Costco. I started out working in a pool store so I have nothing at all against them. But if you want to save money get a test kit yourself and start using the BBB Method. As far a s Phosphates - I question the need for an remover unless your pool is having water quality and clarity problems. Depending on the price of bleach in your area, sometimes it is cheaper to get a case of liquid chlorine from your local pool store. Most Leslie's don't stock liquid chlorine. But your regular Mom & Pop pool store should stock liquid chlorine and Muriatic Acid. Getting both by the case (4 gallons) is cheaper.

Acid is used to lower the pH and a lower pH (7.2-7.6) makes the chlorine more effective. A high pH (7.8-8.2) slows down the chlorine kill speed.
